Splitfire V's Superspark Coils

I have seen some posts of people finding the Supaspark coilpacks rubber boots becoming brittle after only a few months in a hot engine bay. Mustn't be using good silicone??? Splitfires are by far the better option in my opinion. I have a set sitting in my garage that continued to work even through a catastrophic engine failure due to water loss. They are melted onto the housings and still worked!!

I've only ever replaced mine with stock cheaply from the wreckers. Don't need anything special for 500hp in the GTR, so why spend money I don't have to?

Hi i am on here on behalf of my son and i am hoping you might be able to help me. He bought a skyline r33 with the rb 25det series 2 engine about 18 months ago, every thing was going fine till about 6months ago when he started to get a missfire. We found that the original coil packs were shorting out. I bought a new set of super spark coil packs and had the mechanic replace them. the car ran fine for a week when all of a sudden it started to missfire again and i thought it couldn't possibly be a ciol pack problem so this time i took to a high performace tune up specialist specilizing in skylines. After putting on the dyno and checking the entire system he found one of the new coil packs was not firing and we replaced it with a second hand nissan one and again every thing was ok. The faulty pack was replaced under warranty and we took out the second hand coil pack and replaced it with the new super spark pack. Two monthes down the road and would you believe it the same problem again, this time we took to a high performance specilist in melbourne who found 2 coil packs not firing. Had to pay for a genuine nissan coil pack just to get the car on the road, the car was once again running fine and after complaining to super spark supliers had the whole set replaced under warranty. I have now replaced all 6 coil packs again and 1 month later one of them has already faileddevil.gif

my son's car is stock standard apart from the front mount intercooler it has been checked bu 3 different specialists and they have found no other problems, the coil pack loom is fine and has checked and it runs at standard boost. The thing is the problem has deffenetly been the coil packs but i realy can't see how all these coil packs can be faulty and fail in such a short time. Is there anything that could cause the coil packs to fail? His ECU is standard as far as we know and the mechanics do not seem to think it has been tampered with. Please help if you can. When you said the coil wiring had been tested, how exactly did they test this?

The problem isn’t the coils; I would start by checking voltage at the main coil feed and checking for voltage drop under load.

This test can be preformed easy on a Dyno by watching voltage drop under boost, if voltage drop's erratically under load, then a relay is required to the battery, well in your son's case, R33, hook up to main power feed in fuse panel under the bonnet.

Also inspect the coil plugs, with heat and ages they become brittle and crack. One thing we find is due to the age the vehicle; the wire gets "what we call" green cancer and this causes resistance in the wire.

Hi Rick, thanks for your quick reply,all i know is that when they found the faulty coil pack they checked the loom plug that connects to the coil pack with a test light to make sure that there is power to it and they also try different coils in place of the faulty one and if they work then they try the faulty coil in place of one of the other coils and if they do not get a spark then they blame the coil pack. I am not upto date on these cars but i have worked on older cars all my life and rebuilt a vc valiant from bottom up so i do know a little about cars and i find it very hard to believe that all these coil packs are faulty and agree with you that there is another issue. What i do not understand is that if there is a problem some where else why does the car run fine for a couple of months after replacing the suspect coil? can the problems you have mentioned cause the coils to fail? Can you recommend somewhere around melbourne where i can take the car and have them check for the possible cause? i would like to take it to someone who knows what there doing. I cant afford to be replacing coil packs every 2 months. Again thanks for your help and i look forward to you reply

Is it the same coils being replaced each time (cylinder order) or is it random coils dieing???

If it is the same coils each time then it is defenatly a wiring problem, even still with random coils dieing I would still be suspect on the coil wiring.

Hi Rick, The first time it happened to the original nissan coils the mehanic changed all of them because he said that it would be the best option so i do not know which cylinder number coil was faulty. Since i have been tracking the problem it has been the coils on cylinder 1-2 and 6 so i am at a loss. have you any suggestions which might leed me in the right direction? I have a very good friend who is an auto electrician but they do not have a dyno and do not have experiance with these cars. Thanks Paul

definitely something wrong with your setup! no car should ever go through that many coils

check the coil pack earthing as well!

Thanks HeyHey, yes i will have to start looking at all the other possible causes, i will write down all the suggestions that you and anyone else is kind enouth to give me and see if i can fix the problem. I am open to all suggestions so if anyone else wants to add any advise i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all on this forum for your help and if i do find the problem i will let you know, but in the mean time please keep the ideas comming in. Paulwave.gif

i had a similar problem. i took off the igniter and cleaned all of the gunk off the pins with electrical contact cleaner, i was dropping cylinders 1,2 and 6 randomly as well

Thanks mate, my son is comming up to lakes entrance with his car this weekend and i will do what i can. i should be able to Clean the contacts but all the other elericale suggestions would have to be checked by a pro. Thanks for your input. If someone could suggest a good place to take the car (in Melbourne)and have this problem checked i would appreciate it Thanks Paul blush.gif

Hi Rick, regarding the problem with the coils dieing on my sons r33 gtst the required testing is above my knowledge and i found a place in melbourne called "Advanced Jap Auto Imports", I was wondering if you have heard of them seeming you are in the trade and if they know what they are doing? I am thinkig of taking the car there to see if they can find the problem. Even if anyone else reading this post has had any dealings with them please tell me what you think of their work. I am pensioner so money is very tight, i don't mind paying as long as the problem is fixed, as i explained the other 2 places i took it they just blamed the coil packs and you do not have to be a mechanic to know that there has to be more to it.     • I have S15 helical too. It is a bit worn. I think the drive behaviour you describe is related to this wear. Wear of helicals is something that no-one seems to have paid a lot of attention to, but now that they (as in original Nissan ones) are all a bit old - we're starting to  see the consequences. The ends of the helical spurs wear into the casing. That's where they perform the braking that diverts torque. Some of the more modern helical designs have proper wear surfaces introduced there, but the Nissan ones are just steel on steel (or iron).
    • I've had a range of rear diff centres - open, viscous, helical, mechanical, welded, etc.   I can't go past a refreshed factory 32 gtr centre for consistent lock and street driving. The next step up for me would be the nismo 1.5 way , which likely suits you better as track sounds like the focus. Will chatter in carparks but its not the worst.   I have never tried a quaife rear diff, an option I've looked at before and might be one for you .....   Currently playing with an S15 centre at the moment and I hate it.  The transition from single wheel spin either side is just weird.
    • Honestly, I did think the PDM could do it and thought Haltech told me the pump didn’t like it. But after re-reading the emails and comments above, I clearly misunderstood lol.
    • I also run a CD009. I'm currently on a 4.08 and it's not great. I originally intended to run a 3.3 but had issues, more on that later. I'd stick to anywhere between a 3.3-3.7 as found in the 350z.  As for brands of ring and pinions, absolutely stay away from Speedtek. They are absolute garbage. See my build thread for more information on that. I went through two of there 3.3's and both had bad runout. They were paperweights and they have still yet to refund me.  I ended up putting in a Nissan 4.08, which was better then the original 4.36 but is far from ideal. I'm going to pop a 3.5 in this winter. I'd stick Nissan. I've also heard of a company "Neat Gearboxes" that makes them. Haven't tried them, but they can't be worst then Speedtek... 
    • You should Nistune the ECU, so you have freedom to use modern injectors instead of replacing with the same old shit. This is also required if you want to boost it up above ~200rwkW, where the stock injectors will be running out of capacity. Having said that, it is unlikely that the injectors need replacing just 'coz. If you imported it from Japan, the fuel should have been pretty good quality for the whole life of the car.
