Just noticed there's a RB20 (I gather RB24) in the Top RB20 Club making similar power figure

(367rwkw) with cams + HKS TO4ZR turbo at 23psi (post #1602) -

Im interested to know what sized rear housing and wheel is on the rear of a t04z, surely its not 1.6 like a few t04z's. We recently experimented with a mates RB20 with forgies and all sorts and made 291rwkw on 16psi with a gt3540 with a 1.06 rear. However out boost curve is identical to the power curve and never levels out...LOL! however this 20 made 30psi quickly and leveled out. Any insite jeff as to what could cause such a gradual boost curve? Got cams n all.

Yeah i noticed that too, the extra capacity of the rb24 and big cams really help. You can see how we run much more boost for the same power but i am honestly surprised that a totally stock rb20 head can flow as much as it does with standard cams. The ports and valves are pretty small.

I think it is cool that both these engines are running on remapped standard ecu. :)

Hi Ryan, the turbo is actually a GT4094R - garrett 751470-20

If you are having problems with lazy spooling the things to look for would be exhaust manifold leaks, wastegate leaking, cam timing.

yea thanks jeff, its got a pair of jun cams and cam gears, full rebuild with aries pistons, we tuned it ourselves with a microtech ltx12s, i think its just the nature of the turbo and 20 combination....goes like an animal nonetheless, cheers for your advice. we'll tinker a little bit more.

by the looks of things its around 160km/h so around 3800-4000rpm depending on the ratio. Keeping in mind, depending on what bleeder/controller you are using boost will be a bit flatter if it isn't so high because the actuator will start to open sooner with lower boost. Only slightly tho.

Thats some pretty sik numbers Jeff, (around 500hp) good effort.

That magical 400kw figure doesn't seem too far away with a decent cam profile.

I noticed you've decreased spring travel to increase the rate & seat pressure, as long as there is no chance of binding & room for more lift I can't see why you wouldn't get even more impressive numbers.

We must hook up as discussed a few weeks ago when I get back from QLD, cheers.

Sorry to dig up an old thread i was just after some info on the re shimmed stock valve springs if anyone can enlighten me???

I have HKS 264 cams (cant remember the lift) to go into my RB20 and wasn't keen on upgrading the valve springs if i didn't have to :thumbsup:

Just wondering who it was that shimmed them, whats involved and roughly how much it cost???

mate seems like turbo tune ain't change much since back in 05/06 they overtuned my engine which almost went bang, before i ripped it out and put a new one in then took it blackwood dyno got a tune from them sudden;y more power better response and it didn't wanna go bang anymore,

then they told me wasn't us it was u!!!

for the 1500 bucks i spent on rb25det including buying and installing and tuning (only 40,000ks on engine) i didn't bother trying to chase it up legally would have cost me to much then

thats my glowing recommendation for turbo tune love ya!!

dude, im not saying your wrong or right etc.... i just want to clarify the rb20 that they have built was a lazy engine that was replaced my a fresh one out of a customers car, which had been laying around, they put it in an s14 shell, used a whole heap of parts laying around and FOR A LAUGH tried to find the limits of the motor, It was over a few beers, a few mates and a few laughs after hours and im pretty sure they intended to blow it up, It was by no means an example of what they'd deliver to a customer in any way...

whats the highest safe amount of boost to run with a stock rb25?

do a search man, i personally wouldn't run any more than 17-18psi which a thicker headgasket.

Ryan... the soloution for chris's car is simple.....

Nitrous. And Lots of it. :blush::D

I am also intending running 1.1 - 1.2 bar with stock head gasket.... not pushing the same power as you though Simon. :thumbsup:

    • Update: I got the magnet out. I bought 3 different flexible magnetic reach tools, but none of them worked. The magnet on the tip was all less than 2lbs of force, so i had to buy a special cylindrical magnet that had a pull force of 9lbs.  The magnet finally came in the mail yesterday, so i got under the car to get to work. The super strong magnet isn't that long, so i only have about 1 finger pinch lengths to hold it. I was so scared when i was going in the hole, that the 9lb magnet would just fly away inside the oil pan never to be seen again, but i had my butt cheeks clenched and finger gripped on that thing so tight, i managed to get it to suck the other magnet out.  It was a victory for me last night.         
    • Yep, pretty much what you said is a good summary. The aftermarket thing just attached to the rim, then has two lines out to valve stems, one to inner wheel, one to outer wheel. Some of the systems even start to air up as you head towards highway speed. IE, you're in the logging tracks, then as speeds increase it knows you're on tarmac and airs up so the driver doesn't even have to remember. I bet the ones that need driver intervention to air up end up seeing a lot more tyre wear from "forest pressures" in use on the highway!
    • Yes, but you need to do these type certifications for tuning parts. That is the absurd part here. Meaning tuning parts are very costly (generally speaking) as well as the technical test documentation for say a turbo swap with more power. It just makes modifying everything crazy expensive and complicated. That bracket has been lost in translation many years ago I assume, it was not there.
    • Hahaha, yeah.... not what you'd call a tamper-proof design.... but yes, with the truck setup, the lines are always connected, but typically they sit just inside the plane of the rear metal mudguards, so if you clear the guards you clear the lines as well. Not rogue 4WD tracks with tree branches and bushes everywhere, ready to hook-up an air hose. You can do it externally like a mod, but dedicated setups air-pressurize the undriven hubs, and on driven axles you can do the same thing, or pressurize the axles (lots of designs out there for this idea)... https://www.trtaustralia.com.au/traction-air-cti-system/  for example.... ..the trouble I've got here... wrt the bimmer ad... is the last bit...they don't want to show it spinning, do they.... give all the illusion that things are moving...but no...and what the hell tyre profile is that?...25??? ...far kernel, rims would be dead inside 10klms on most roads around here.... 😃
