Hi all,

Just a notice of caution re: the Series 2 Xanavi unit-to-standard climate control conversion to others looking to do this conversion; it is not a straight swap; the wiring looms are different.

[photos of connectors showing differences to come]

More specifically the standard climate controller takes one 20-pin and one 18-pin plug, whereas the Xanavi unit takes two x 20-pin plugs and they're physically different. I will persist as I want to be rid of the damn Xanavi unit, and post my findings...

I know I have posted elsewhere (in the reversing camera thread) about this but that didn't really seem like the right place. So instead I am asking "has anybody successfully replaced their Xanavi climate control/gps/etc with a standard climate control"???

If you have, and you can share any secrets about how you did it, I would be very very grateful... at the moment I have the entire Xanavi system out and boot gear out too... poor stagea is in bits :D however I have an in-dash LCD touchscreen on the way and I want to be rid of this damned Xanavi setup. I have been through the manual and the car and it's just such a mess, three or four individual units which share about 6 or 7 wiring harnesses before sending it all up and down the car... yeah. If I at least had English wiring diagrams, I might have a hope.

Plan at this stage is to try to get hold of the climate control harness off a non-Xanavi series 2 and splice in matching colours, with the standard pinout as a reference (in Jap).

Took some snaps, lots more research, here is the 'crux of the problem':

As you can see it is certainly not plug-and-play... my plan of attack is to try to get hold of the two plugs (and some cable) off of the standard S2 loom and splice them to the xanavi ones... anyone have a donor S2 they are wrecking? PM me :(

Yeh i was thinking of going the same way. Was speaking to my mate who works for Clarion and he had

suggested to have two screens. My bottom section is a Mini Disk player, so would just yank that out

and put in a single din fold out screen....only thing is i prefer the look of the Clarion double din screen,

and would two screens be weird? I know alot of people who have the standard screen in their Stagea's

like them, and they dont look too bad, though i just like having the extra features of an aftermarket

screen like ipod touch screen control, built in blue tooth for your phone etc. Mainly the ipod feature though

cos its annoying not to mention dangerous trying to go through an actual ipod to try and find a song or

whatever, rather than have it all up on big screen....see what happens when my car gets here i guess.

Oops, finally got some replies and I missed them!!! sorry!

Awesome Ed!!! Just what I was looking for for weeks before I gave up... if I can get hold of one of these convertors, I will give it a go! That looks like the sort of thing, as it appears to split out the video/audio signal from the climate control connections.

...ohhh waiiit a minute, 41,000Y FARK! that's over 400 bucks not including postage??! (a home job too?)

CL11QE the progress is that, I am waiting on somebody to supply me the plugs & wire off a standard climate control for a series 2 (has to be series 2, series 1's had different plugs). I've had a couple of leads (pardon the pun) but nothing has eventuated yet. Just waiting on one possibility in a Sydney wrecking yard, and one forum member.

Chook - I want to replace the screen because:

- it doesn't have a VGA connection (well not one that I can trace anyway) and is therefore too fuzzy to use for a car PC

- I need a touch screen (again, can't trace touchscreen connections)

- it's small, only 6.5 inches (hmm) but not overly bothered

- it's in japanese (again not too bothered)

- I can't use it while the vehicle's in motion (for playing audio files, of course)

I prefer stock, and I would love to use the Xanavi unit, but I just haven't been able to overcome these problems.

basically my aim is just to get a decent picture, the factory screen is low-res (about 236 lines vertically) and only has a composite input, I need 800x480 at least and an RGB input (to get text I can reeeeeaaad).

Oh, and I have tried the fold-out monitor thing, it looks something like this:

post-32445-1215707795_thumb.jpgpost-32445-1215707804_thumb.jpg

Bear in mind, that you can't go much past vertical with the fold-up screen, as it fouls the temperature knob.

<rant>

All in all the wiring is just a pr*ck, why did they change the whole flippin harness to go from an LCD to a bigger LCD climate control? It has a whole different loom, because the RGB and audio connections for the monitor are combined into the Xanavi climate control harness, meaning that they end up with two slightly different plugs, and a completely different wiring harness... I think the designer in charge of that one needs a :O

just a reply to DAVEB ... im currently working out a discount on i think its a kenwood flip out set up .... is has tilt adjustment as slid adjustment ... to slide in and out ...a soon as iv'e knocked it down from and gob smacking $1800 and get it installed i'll send some pics thru ...cheers

this is a PIONEER AVIC HD-3 if your after double din screen.. you plug an ipod into it ... and it works like a ipod as in same control's as one on the screen ... is has vehicle dynamics on display .... go youtube and check it out ... i did and now i dont want it for the price of 3500 ... i got a quote for 2,900 installed and 5yr warrenty for JB hi-fi ... as for the look .. just turn the back on off and use the aftermarket when using audio or what ever ... or put the aftermarket screen away while listening to music ... i just want my god damn am/fm radio ! so im going all out on this kenwood one to get my reverse camera (spare body parts is a bitch) and maybe down the track headrest screen for the passengers .. this kenwood has 2x AV ...2x USB ..3xRCA yada yada yada .. good luck

Wow, good luck with the discount! look forward to seeing it... yeah the 'slide out' bit makes it possible to get it away from the xanavi controls (so you can flip it back). I don't think it looks too bad at all to have 2 displays - still less than your average rice hatch has in the boot. And the bottom screen can fold away.

Awesome stuff thanks Tim. They look like adapters??! Rare as...

edit: wholly sh*t, it's $463 and counting... if only we could get the wiring diagram!

This is for the xanavi (albeit in japanese)

don't know if it helps you or not.

PM me if you want the rest of the service manual

Thanks Gerard :P I'll see if I can decipher it... It's a job I will have to get around to SOMEtime, but for now I have just stuck with the xanavi 'cause it looks cool lol :D Plus I have gone off the idea of an LCD monitor in there a bit since I had a bit of trouble with heat trying to get (or rather, keep) a car PC going. So for now I have just kept it simple...

haha couldnt work out why i took these pics, now this thread has popped up :P

got the thingy in the boot, so sub and reverse camera is easy to plug and play :D

and knocked it down from $1800 to $1450 installed.

Hey that's a *nice* setup TJ! congratulations. Looks stock too which I LIKE. The fold-out screens are great for that.

I would've kept my cd stacker probably if it worked a bit better. Could be a little flaky at times with some CD's (more just the nature of CDs I think).

So what functions does the Kenwood give you - I am guessing DVD's and digital tv? What is the resolution of the display like? You get a reversing camera hooked up?

yeah gives you GPS if you buy a module to plug in at the rear. rip out factory one.

got my reverse camera hooked up, sits inside the car just below the break light on the back window. at night no so good, going to get it put into the spoiler at some stage. i got it hooked up to a constant power supply so when the boot is fully loaded, and i can use the camera and a rear view mirror :ninja:

iPod connection, digital camera connection, USB connection. can run 2 option screens, and havs 3xRCA. pretty sure if can run tv also, i remember wanting to get one so i guess it would otherwise i wouldn't

of thought about it, but their not cheap :S

    • In a few years from now, you'll regret that. It'll eat away at you, knowing the truth of the ugly hiding beneath the beautiful exterior... 😛
    • I don't think the G2 profile is particularly dangerous for the engine per se, more just are you actually ok with the turbo lag trade-offs? If the answer is yes then go for it. I personally don't think I'd be ok with it because I spend so much time at lower RPMs and I really enjoy the feeling of being able to stay in 5th gear on the highway and just roll into the throttle to get boost. Or staying in 3rd gear on "gentle canyon cruises" without feeling the turbo lag too badly. The 525 pump should be able to run flat out on factory lines but I would bet the pressure drop from pump to regulator is quite impressive. I don't know how much it would be exactly but I've seen figures like 30 psi thrown around.
    • It's interesting seeing everyone talk about what level of risk they are happy to tolerate.  Building a GTR always has a level of risk, you could be that lucky guy that drops 20k on the engine build alone and still has the thing go pop on the dyno. Life is fun like that.  The way I see it, the thing is a toy to be enjoyed. I'd be happy to turn up the power on stock motor and limit the risk with sensible tuning and engine protection. If it still goes pop, it is what it is. The car isn't a daily driver so it can happily sit while a plan is made to sort it out.  Given this thing will be a street car only, I really feel it's worth the (relatively small if managed well) risk to turn the power up to around 350KW on e85.  I don't think anyone getting into the skyline game now is doing it out of logic. Surely it is a purely emotional decision so I'm not sure how important it is to think about the engine build logically. The heart wants what it wants.  @joshuaho96 little note for Josh, I run my 525 pump flat out all the time and through the factory lines without any issues. (excluding the melting connectors, that's sorted now. we'll pretend it never happened lol)
    • But the Nexus S3 is very expensive and won't be as purpose-built for the application as a separate electronic boost controller :^) More seriously my pet issue here would be that the Walbro 525 running at 100% duty cycle is going to require more FPR than the stock setup can handle. I'm also pretty sure from what I've seen elsewhere you might want to slow down the pump regardless unless you're going to come up with some way of upsizing the fuel lines coming from the fuel tank. Factory 8mm fuel line doesn't actually flow very much if you want to keep pressure drop down between the fuel pump outlet and FPR. If you really want to "keep it simple" I would run only as much pump as you need and source a fuel pump controller to slow down the pump in the vain hope of being able to run stock-style FPRs which are pretty dinky. Or just use the HICAS lines and it should be mostly fine. OP should also really think hard about what profile they'd want out of the turbo. My pet choice here would be the G1 profile rather than anything higher power but YMMV. I already think ~stock turbo lag is pretty bad so I don't want to make it worse. In "gentle canyon cruising" I found that I spent a lot of time around 4-4.5k RPM. I also recommend DIYing labor if you're detail-oriented enough. Costs are high for labor + if you do it yourself you can be your own quality control.
    • GTSBoy is again on the money. My actual advice? Sell the car. (really). For what it's worth as is, you can sidegrade into something much better. If you care about function then this is the actual move. If you want a Skyline to perform, set aside about $100K to do it. This is NOT a typo. You will see right away these are two very different mindsets. Realistically we're talking full restomod for any Skyline still kicking around. Have an honest think about which one you are.. and what you want to do, and how much you want to invest in this (with no return).
