Who Has Been Done?

Hi guys.

I recently purchased a skyline to build up as a track car. But I bought one with RWC and Rego so I can occasionally drive it on the road.

Firstly as I obtained my licence in September 2007, this car is illegal for me to drive.

But when buying the car, I was able to insure it my name, with the insurance company knowing the date of my receiving of licence. Also registering the car in my name at vicroads. At no stage did any flashing lights or alerts along this process came up, with no one alerting me to the fact that this car is illegal to drive.

Also I have been recently pulled over, and defected, and at least 3-4 police offices handled my licence as I was detained for over an hour.

At no stage did any officer ask if my car was turbo, although you can see on the intake pipe "intercooled turbo" and they new it was a turbo car.

I am not alone, as many of my other mates, have been taking the turbo risk, one even in a VL commodore has been canaried by TMU.

So I put the question out there.

Has any one been done for driving a turbo who is affected by these new laws?

Firstly, they're not all that new. The law has been around for quite a few years, under the guise of the "power-to-weight" rule.

Secondly, if you did some research on the Vicroads website, you would have known this.

Thirdly, there are any number of threads in this forum on this very subject.

This is illegal, as the power to weight laws have changed for new licence drivers, no turbocharger cars are allowed, regardless

This is because vicroads and your insurance company do not enforce the law, if you want to give them money for a service, they will accept it.

Its upto you, as the individual to ensure your are driving the car legally and not breaking the law.

It will vary from police officer to officer unfortunately, some will be harsh on it and pull you up flat out, some will let it slide.

I would expect your days could be numbered - i guess it depends, whats the fine / penalty if you are caught?

Yes I am aware this topic has been done to death, and I am posting out to all those who I asume know the new laws. But incase your not up to speed.

As quoted from vicroads:

" As part of Victoria’s new graduated licensing system, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles apply to all drivers who obtain their probationary licence after 1 July 2007.

From 1 July 2007, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles will be introduced for probationary licence drivers who obtain their licence from 1 July 2007.

From this date a probationary licence holder will not be able to drive a vehicle if it has:

  • An engine of eight or more cylinders;
  • a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles);
  • an engine that has been modified to increase its performance; and/or
  • any of the following high performance six cylinder vehicles as published in the
    icon_pdf.gifGovernment Gazette: "

Basicaly I am asking if anyone has had these rules inforced on them. As everyone I no who is affected by these laws, and is choosing to break them, has not been caught buy them.

I am thinking that the police are unaware of the laws perhaps.

Vic roads/Insurance won't say a word because its not illegal to own/register/insure a car... You can own/register/insure a Ferrari F430 if you want...

Doesn't mean you can drive it :)

actualy they do have an issue with insurance, no insurance companies will touch you with a 10ft pole if your a P plater and want to insure a skyline, the rule is that if you got your Ps before june 07 or wenever it is, you are under the power to weight ratio rule, witch is no more than 125kw per ton, R33 with a turbo are 133kw per ton, and R32 with a turbo are 122kw per toni think.

If you got your Ps after june 07 then you arnt allowed a turbo or supercharged or V8 at all.

Im pretty sure this is what the rules are, if im wrong please someone correct me.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your insight...

I was insured with my R33 GTS-T and all its mods when on my p's, as are/were a million other p-platers with R33 GTS-T's and other cars over the power to weight limit.

It's not illegal to own a car over the power to weight limit, its illegal to drive one. Many P-platers have been paid out when making a claim on a car over the limit, so again nothing is set in stone and all comes down to the individual case.

Forgot to mention that I was insured with 2 different insurance companies at different times with my R33, both while on my P's :D

Yeah you're right...no 'big' companies...only 2 unheard of insurers going by the names Just Cars and Shannons...

RACV would've insured me too, if I was stupid enough to pay their ridiculous excess.

hmm, im wanting to buy a skyline and im on QLD P plates (read my newbie intro post). Im pretty sure i should be able to get away with it as long as i dont change my licence to a Vic one. Ill just say i drive there too if they ask :) Ive seen plenty of people selling skylines cause they cant drive them on the new laws in my search for a ride. Perhaps debadging your car so it doesnt appear to be a turbo could help? as long as they dont look under the hood :D

I think people have missunderstood my question. I am aware of the laws. I am aware of the before and after july 1st 2007 laws.

I am asking who has actualy been caught, because it dosnt seem like anyone has been done, under the new laws.
