Am I Getting Ripped?

Hi everyone,

100,000 kms is fast approaching on my 98 R33 GTST S2 so i've gone and got a quote from a reputable local garage, as i dont have the time/resources to do it myself...

Was hoping someone would be able to let me know if this quote i got is miles off what it should be, or whether its reasonable, this is a copy of the quote form:

100,000km service - $75

engine oil (pro 15) - $32.25

oil filter - $11.95

EPA + consumables - $14

VKMA92504S Timing belt kit - $449.00

Labour to install (approx 4hrs) - $400

Tune engine - $112.50

Spark plugs - $27

Check high tension leads - 0

Fuel filter - $28

Total - $1149.70

You can see that the bulk of the price is from doing the timing belt... i know its an involved process but just wanted to check with someone in the know that this is about right...

That price looks cheap to me...why arn't you doing water pump at same time?

Ive just noticed from doing a bit of searching that it looks like a good idea to do the water pump aswell.....whats it worth?

I'll probably get it done also while he's in there if this price is reasonable...

Just went down to the local repco who priced the exact same timing belt kit at 650 bucks...lol

Think they are about $170 for the part.

Im sure timing belts arent that much?

Check kudosmotor sports (trader sections) - he sells 100k service kits for nissan.

Pick that up and supply your parts to your mechanic.

YES do waterpump!!

Have a look at the trader section and get that kit he sells. WORTH IT!!

I did a 100000 km service on an r33 late last year

I can't remember how much I paid for the parts but I'm sure the timing belt kit was a lot cheaper than that.

Also If you are doing the water pump check the price from Nissan, you may be surprised. The non genuine water pumps have 1 hole that doesn't quite line up. You can do a mod for this but I'm sure I only paid about $20 extra for a genuine pump. It is a lot easier to fit especially if the mechanic doing the job isn't a Skyline expert.

Also they would have quoted you for standard spark plugs. Get platinum or Iridium plugs. You won't have to get them changed for another 100000km. With standards they will charge you an hours labour every 20000 km or so to change them. So it is cheaper in the long run

Yeah im gonna go with the 100k HD kit from kudos with the genuine water pump....looks pretty reasonable in comparison to what ive been quoted for just a standard belt + tensioners...

Yep the engine tune was to set the timing...

And im gonna have to pass on the platinum/iridium plugs for the reason that in a few other threads on here i have read about the fact that skylines run rich, foul the plugs and end up with a missfire - a missfire that mine suffers from. If i can be sure that its not the plugs causing this problem, i will consider iridium plugs for economy etc... but im still tryin to figure out where my miss is coming from, but cheers for the advice nonetheless....

From memory:

Gates tripple strength timing belt $125 (Acme parts) I think you can get them cheaper from Justjap !

Idler and tentioner bearings (I think) $85 (CBC bearings)

Cam and crank seal (3) $18 (CBC bearings)

Water pump (RB30) $52 ( Acme Parts)

Mechanic to install the lot $300

      Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.

      Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.

      Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.

      Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.

      It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.
