Hey,

Got a Batmbl front/dump + hiflow cat installed into my car.

After getting it installed, i noticed that I can now hear a high pitched turbo spool sound which wasnt heard before on the stock exhaust.

Also it seems less responsive in the lower revs...

Would this be due to a leaking gasket by any chance?

The compressor turbo gasket was re-used (was in good condition) and the cat had to be unbolted right after a quick test drive to re-adjust the exhaust.

A leaking gasket could explain the loss of backpressure resulting in less response in low revs...

Cheers

Patrick

when my car was queeling, it was coming from the bov leaking... check that and vacume lines, i know its got nothing to do with the dump/front but ye, its a skyline, shit happens.

also did u use the gaskets that came with the dump/front/pipe?

i would recommend you go and order factory nissan stuff n put them on... but the thing is, if it was leaking from the gasket i dont think it would squeal

thie high pitch noise is just the turbine wheel spinning up. nothing unusual. my 180sx did it after dump pipe, and my rx7 as well, as well as my mates 200sx and my gtr.

leakin exhaust gasket doesnt do anything for back pressure.. the turbine does most of the back pressure (80%+)

so if u have a leak after it, then it doesnt matter.. hence y race cars run just a massive straight pipe from the back of the turbo to the side of the car..

i dont think he means induction sound, im pretty sure he might HIGH pitch noises... unless his a para kent

Exhaust leak for sure :P

in all the exaust leaks i have heard in my days, never heard a high pitch sound.. trackor noises, watter hitting a fan watever u want to call it yes, but no high pitch.. tho u learn something new everyday.

hrm my last r33 gtst made the same noise, which was pretty loud too.. it made the noise before i had new dump pipe installed, and also after. i've also put sealant on exhaust gaskets too when i installed the hks dump so i'm quite certain there's no leaks.

it didn't have any problems throughout the years i've owned it, fast spool up, made 180rwkw all day everyday..

i've since sold the car 2.5 years ago, and the car is still running fine to date according to the new owner...

still using the same turbo, except its now 200rwkw all day everyday...

i'm guessing that your turbo was making the noise or it might've even had shaft play from before anyway, except the sound was covered with the restriction from the stock dump pipe, heat shield.. or that the shaft play wasnt that apparent until you installed the more free flowing dump

if your turbo already has shaft play, it will also cause it to whine, but i wouldnt really worry about it unless it's really effecting the drive. if the turbo really has shaft play then u either recondition the turbo or get a new one..

manifold to block gaskets generally get the "tractor" sound your talking about as they fail nice and big.

the dump and rear flanges however if there is a slight leak get high pitch, and overtime wear down the gasket and it'll then get deeper over time.

Especially noticeable if using a metal gasket i've found.

And any leak isn't good in reference to not worrying about it above.

Its a leak, its going to cause turbulence as its the path of least resistance for "some" of the airflow

ah i was actually referring to shaft play.. didnt really take leak into account when i said not too worry too much..

i hate leaks in the exhaust, so htat's why i use the gasket goo along with the gaskets.. in my case i'm pretty sure there was no leaks..

but since it's a dump pipe installation, u'd smell it pretty quick if there's any leak.. also put ur hand near the gaskets while blocking the end of the exhaust and you'll feel if there's any leaks too (be careful not to touch the exhaust)

i didnt say induction noise

i clearly said TURBINE. the turbine does make its own whine u know it is a very high pitched noise and it sounds nothing like leakin exhaust..

almost all aftermarket dumps do it because they are very thin compared to the cast iron stock dumps and thats why theyre so noisey. its fairly standard

i see it all the time

All aftermarket dumps do it? Thats a load of crap.

I cant even think of ONE car that "whines", and come to think of it... i cant think of a car with a stock cast dump either.

So 100's of cars, no whines, i wonder if what your seeing is poor workmanship?

I have to side with bumblebee partially on this one...when i went from a batmbl dump to a hks dump on my 2535 i suddenly started to get a high pitched wail as the turbo spooled...changing the gasket did not help either...for an unrelated reason I wrapped the dump in heat wrap and had a resonator welded onto the catback...after this the sound disappeared totally...in the end i just put the noise down to some sort of weird resonance caused by the turbo dump and exhaust...so i think it is possible...but take what you want from my experience...

As for the original thread about a leaking gasket causing the loss of backpressure resulting in less response in low revs...all i can say is WTF?! That is a load of bull...less backpressire is a good thing...

i have a high pitch squeal from my turbo, only use to happen when it came on boost hard now it does it every time it comes on boost i know from other people that it is shaft play, but you believe what you want to.

look at it one way, time to upgrade :(

I got a high squeal as if blowing a whistle really hard after i had a poxy front pipe made up and fitted. It was an exhaust leak, dissapeared when I got my bmobile front dump combo installed properly. everything is all fine and dandy now

mr dude who reckons his done 100s.. im a mech. ive done 1000s of cars of all shapes and sizes and it has nothing to do with worksmanship at all. its just that an a/m dump pipe is about 3mm thick and a cast is about 10mm+

all dumps do it. if u cant hear it then u have hearing problems or u justcant pick up the high frequency. its not your fault. your just human.

if it sounds like ur blowing through a whistle then it wont be the turbine sound. turbine whine increases its frequency as it starts to spool until u cant hear it anymore.. dont forget the spool upto about 120k rpm.. soo ull hear the turbine spool up before u hear the compressor.

what is a compressor gasket?

do you mean the exhaust gasket between the dump and turbo?

what boost are you running and what other mods do you have?

yes sorry about that, got mixed up haha.

The exhaust gasket between the dump/turbo was reused.

Im running standard boost 10psi and always have. Just full exhaust and smic thats it.

Cheers all for the comments, ill replace both gaskets on the front/dump and see if that reduces the sound.

Thanks :(

Half the rubbish you post here makes me think otherwise in all honesty :D

And i dont have hearing problems, they were actually checked about 1 month ago as part of a medical.

Maybe yours are broken? Afterall, your only human.
