There are oil cooling turbos (greddy) and water/oil cooling turbos(garret)..

If we connect only oil lines in turbo like T04Z we will have any problem?

Because I hear some people to tell that the water in turbo is useless as some times is very hot.

So I want to hear proff opinions.

Ofcourse it isn't the problem the money for the pipes but my mechanic told me to don't connect water in turbo and I fear!!!

I have done this with a mitsubishi turbo before and had zero problems.

I would even expect with the larger surface area of the water cooled turbo core that it would dissipate heat slightly better than a non-water cooled core even without the water lines connected.

That said - I still prefer to connect them up to water as well (even though it is always such a pain getting the damn things connected!)

My experiences differ.

A good mate fried a water cooled T66 flowing about 450hp; he'd not been running water through it.

Remember, ball bearing units like the Z have restrictors that limit the oil flow... so oil alone wont be enough to cool the cartridge (unlike journal bearing units)

I would think the water jacket around the core... thats supposed to have a cool medium flowing through it?... would act as an insulator and trap heat in if not connected.

Although not 100% definitive evidence as such, the little lab monkey sitting on my shoulder wearing a lab coat, holding some verniers and a calculator screams to run the turbo in which the way it was designed to... specially when its of little expense or effort to do so.

Connect it up without a doubt. Water has a quite high specific & volumetric heat capacity; therefore it can carry quite a bit of heat energy away from the core and do a pretty effective job of cooling the turbo - by no means useless. And a larger surface area by itself, without any water flowing through, will still suffer from heat soak.

And its really not a massive job :(

They are plain bearing

They have no oil flow restrictors and hence flow lots of oil

and water/oil cooling turbos(garret)..

They are (generally speaking) ball bearing

They have oil flow restrictors and hence don't flow a lot of oil

So the answer is simple, there is not enough oil flow to cool them on its own, that's why they have water cooling.

    • Well, back in the day..... "race" fluids, which were essentially only really "high temp" fluids, used to absorb water more readily. So they really needed to be changed more often anyway. The coincidence of that being directly necessary along with it being what racers would do as a matter of course was just fine.
    • Does the high temp fluid degrade any different over time compared to normal one? That's one thing I've always been wondering. Because a track car is going to get the fluid flushed probably way more often than every two years and will see less kilometers driven. I would think the requirements are different. I'm running Motul RBF 600 in mine. Was recommended by my mechanic before a trackday and I've stuck with it since. Hasn't seen the track since but I've kept buying and using it for servicing anyway.
    • The brakes are all stock bar some DBA slotted discs and the EBC pads and braided lines. The car has brake ducts as standard but they're kinda pointed in the general direction of the brakes rather than really getting at the heat source. I guess I should hit it with an infra red thermometer after a session and see what they're at.  100%! Its just a curiosity more than anything. As I said, high temp brake fluid was such a track day rage back in the day. From people I speak to at the track and threads on here everybody has their own take on it but I'm not gonna scoff at spending a few more bucks.    OH, a quick side question - would you use brake fluid from an opened container even if the lid has been on? Eg, if you have a bottle that you opened last time you flushed, it's been tightly closed, is it still good?
