I've never ever had squeaky brakes, even with my 1wk old RB74's.

The brake mechanic at 'Race Brakes' said if u are getting squeal then go and 're-bed' them in again. This will roughen them up and usually removes squeal.

It depends on your type of brake pads but usually its a series of heavy braking followed by a 10-15min cooling off period (ie; no braking).

Check on the manufactures website for exact instructions.

I'm not sure that you can bed them in unless they are new. When new theyve got some protective resin on them that you have to burn off.

If you dont bed them in properly the pads can glaze, and I thought that to remove this you'd need to sand them back, not bed them in again.

sandign them back worked for a while, its an on and off thing with my brakes, squeak, no squeak! Edge what is burnished the discs ? how can i fix this. They were machined a month or so ago, taken to the track squeal came back? thought it was the lip at first but my guess was wrong:S oh well im gonna buy sum soft pads first and see if its just the pads, if not then SHIT brake upgrade it is

Has anyone tried anti-squeal paste between doubble shims?

You can see burnished disks have turned brown in places.

With mine I get squeal like a freight train after I drive hard for 2 minutes and none after I drive like a grandmother for a coupple of days.

So I'm seriously looking for slotted rotors.

I wonder if we could organise a group buy?

We did, about 5mths ago... guess you missed the boat.

Got the DBA4000 series slotted and fitted for like $900.

:P my discs arent brown at all. Ive thought about machining them again however they are too thin! i would be into a group buy however id be gettin NA discs not turbo ones. Also wondering are discs meant to feel ultra smooth or have like fine ridges cos my amtes pulsar is smooth as marble, i thought this was glazed discs?

That -was- for all 4, you won't get them at that price now though as it was a large order groupbuy.

The fronts were about $210ea and the backs about $202ea from memory. Then it was about $80 to have them fitted etc.

Only 30hrs until I get my car back with braided brake lines, new pads and a caliper overhaul whooooo.

I'mmmmmm excited !!

  • 4 months later...

On the R32 there is a wear "guide"....dont know how to explain it, but there is a piece of metal, like the metal shim on the back of the pad, that as the pad wears comes in contact with the rotor.

Basically its there to make a squeal noise as the pad gets low (mine had heaps left) to make sure u check ur brakes in the near future. (who wouldn't if they were squealing??

I just removed the wheel, seen there was heaps left, then bent this little wear idicator back a bit to give less warning.

Sorry if its different, but its on the r32, and me mates brothers n13 pulsar.

That "wear guide" is something on the factory pads, and is also on R33 pads. It's often (always?) absent on aftermarket pads.

I found the wear guide to be pretty pessimistic in the amount of pad left. When mine started squealing I pulled the pads out and bent them back a bit to give me another mm or so of pad :(

Benm - thanks heaps for putting the details up. Good effort. We need more of these DIY on SAU.

About the wear guide. My old Stanza had them, they started squeeling one day so I ripped the metal tab off. Then about 3 months later I put my foot on the brake and heard a massive clunck and a REALLY LOUD squeel.. The brake pad material came off of the metal plate, so it was running metal on metal !!

I drove 20km to the brake place using just the handbrake to stop !! LOL

J

My rear pads still squeel 50% of the time (either really soft pedal pressure, or really hard pedal pressure but not inbetween) since the mechanic had black paint spilt on them :) It could be that this metal shim is just squeeling against the rotor although its highly unlikely coz I have taken the pads out and sanded then put back in to try it again.

They have only done around 5,000km so I might just sand like heaps and heaps off them or just go buy some Bendix pads and leave these for trackdays.
