hey guys i have just sold my r32 gtst and have been thinking about my next car though i have been thinking over buying something turboed again or something just normal to get me around reliably. Now i've been looking at ceffy's like the 4 door thigns and always having a thing for ceffy's but on the other hand i've been thinking about jsut getting a 2000 model lancer which is much newer and a money saver.

owning a r32 89 model i have been concerned about getting into another 89 model turbo import since they are almost 20 years old and things are starting to jsut get old but i'm the type of person who is just into the import world and can have nothing but.

i am a uni student and only work weekends and couldn't afford maintaining the r32 since there was a few things wrong with it that proved to be quite costly so i gave it to someone who could fix it and give it a good home. i also like my space hence the skyline so i want a 4 door but not only that i'm a drumemr for my band so i like having space. Also i'm a P plater so i like the ceffy being under the power to weight ratio. now my question are:

1. i need a daily to get me around everywhere like school, going out, work, to and from the missus house and so on so is a ceffy a good daily? i'll drive maybe 250-350kms a week.

2. petrol wise how big is the tank, how much to fill up to full with ultimate and how does it go for a stock ceffy with bolt on mods for a full tank?

3. i hate cop attention so do ceffy's get stopped alot or picked on by cops? i would think not since hardly anyone knows what they are?

4. parts availability knowing they are rb20dets but more for drive train and suspension parts?

5. common problems with ceffy's i should look out for?

http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/priva...=82&trecs=5

that is the ceffy i am interested in and it looks bloody irresistable lol.

now its either this or the lancer. of course the lancer being newer, petrol not costing anywhere as much as a turbo, large part availability and an awesome daily is also very tempting but considering my circumstances i'd jsut like to know ur opinions please. i know this is a ceffy forum lol but try and be open minded about it as i've had a long hard think about it but have not come up with a conculsion.

thanks!

Looks mint, and judging by the details listed you shouldn't have any troubles with maintenance.

In reply to 1) I drive my ceff around everywhere, only reason it couldn't be a daily is if you had bullshit suspension or engine work.

2) Not sure on tank size but that's not really relevant, I'm getting about 10.5litres/100km, and I don't baby the car everywhere. Also running 13psi boost.

3) Would depend where you live, but like most imports you are going to have more problems if you are drawing attention to yourself with obscenely loud BOV etc and if you are driving like an idiot.

4) Drive train/suspension, basically it's a non-turbo R32 rear end, and S13 front end. Couple little differences like tailshaft is longer (due to longer wheelbase) castor rod brackets are A31/C33 specific. It's already had a 5 stud conversion, so it would now have R32 turbo rear end, and S14 hubs up front.

5) The window controls can stuff up, if yours still work then it's simply a matter of spray it with some contact cleaner and seal it up using something like hot glue, otherwise it will get corrosion from exposure to moisture in the door shell. Otherwise it should be reliable. Autech kits are hard to come by, so don't smash it up lol.

this is just my opinon....

if your not 100% on buying a cefiro, dont buy one.

they certainly are an acquired taste, so you either love them or hate them. i personally love them hence why ive suck so much money into mine.

and if you love them and genuinely have the opportunity to buy one, buy it.

if your unsure, buy something else.

full consumption will vary massively depending on mods and tune, stock cefiros hardly raise an eyebrow for the police. but a simple front bar and wheels and its an entirely different story.

RB20, gearboxs etc are the same as R32.

suspension is the same as S13.

common probs. wiring issues with the windows requires them to be hard wired on most occasions.

rust, rear wheels arches, below front and rear windscreen.

idiots putting jacks under the chassis rails and crushing them.

the list goes on, theres not a set list of common probs, as ive had plenty.

do your resurce before you buy as not alot of people no the in's and out's of ceffys.

GOODLUCK!!!

thanks for the input guys.....my main problem with owning a ceffy is that i'm un familiar with the reliability and also just since the poor old school imports are just getting old now otherwise i love them and for the fact that i'm on my p's i'd love some rwd turbo power that is disguised.

jsut hoping the car i'm after doesn't disapoint me. thanks again

Well what was wrong with the R32? Was it just general maintenance or was it expensive things that were breaking? Any car is going to have regular maintenance costs and occasional expensive costs, regardless of its age.

If you get a ceffy with low km's ie 40000km's ...u generally wont have a problem with it, maybe the odd steering rack boot or rusting exhaust oh and wiring issues (electric windows and lights) etc. But that will be like any car of similar age and kms. As a daily its a great car esp if you have some fairly stockish suspension. Cops have never bothered me although i dont have a modded exhaust but i do have coilovers and at one stage did have some works wheels....Its economical and when you want power you have it, its also great for long distance / highway driving because of the extra power you really never need to get out of fifth gear. But that would be alot like the r32 anyway. And na lancer will be gutless........everytime i drive a standard na car i realise how awesome a turbo car is ............anyway i will stop prattling now.

    • You see R34 GTRs listed for 200-300k are they really selling for these prices? Kinda seems like the same ones listed all the time. Even with R33 GTSTs looking at gumtree. You have an auto with a bitsa interior for 35k. Another one needs an engine rebuild and asking 24k. And then you have a stock in better than average condition for 45k. Nobody is ever going to pay these prices.
    • Only needed to pull out the seats, center console and gear shifter surround, took a weekend and a fair few beers. You get to look forward to finding all sorts of weird shit under the seats and carpet, I pulled out a Chinese dudes passport from 2003, 220 yen and a condom wrapper 😆
    • Well, turns out not a lot happened from back then to now, between life again, and working on 3 separate other cars (only one of which was mine, and will now be departing the household soon).   So I decided with the whole "don't go outside, it's a cyclone!" Turning in to being not a whole lot, I ventured down to the garage, found a couple of water leaks in the shed (the main one I've already fixed), and then ended up "stuck" as it started pouring rain, and I didn't want to walk back inside in the pouring rain. This meant I ended up taking a look at the Skyline, and trying to work out what past Matt had been upto. I retraced a few things out from scratch, added the rest of the power feeds in that I needed for the indicators, and headlights. Double checked I'd wired a few things up correctly (and worked out how I wired a few things to begin with), updated my sparse notes. Added one of the ground points. Oh, and got really really dusty, as the car is quite dirty. Wrote up quickly what should be left for me to do with the wiring too. Adding the below photos more for my records than anything else. I need to make myself a proper book for the car that details everything, and how I've done it, but for now, this is my records... The third image is my most important one for me, and I need to draw it out into a proper schematic eventually. The last photo is my re-written list, I'd have put it on the white board, except I had to take the white board down to fix one of the water leaks.
