Hi guys,

I went to book my RS4 in for an alarm fitment to work together with my central locking. Now the staff took down my booking when I agreed on alarm model and price, and only after then did he ask if I had an existing central locking system ... which I had explained to him earlier.

This is where it got confusing ...

The guy who installs the alarms informed me that another central locking motor is required so the alarm will disarm and unlock the doors at the same time. Now what I don't understand is: why can't they use the existing central locking system? The tech explained to me the drivers door is basically a 'slave' to the other 3 doors. If I fit the alarm without the extra motor, only the other 3 doors will unlock, not the drivers door? How? Why? This he couldn't explain properly.

He asked if when I'm in the car and I manually lock my door or unlock it, do the other doors follow or is only the driver's door affected? Yes, was my answer. He thought about it (thought he had me there!) then asked does the key unlocking the passenger door unlock all doors. I said 'no'. Doh, thought he had me again (obviously not giving him the answer he wants). Finally he asks if the remote unlocks one door at a time or all. I said all. Wellllllll ... then the door "only has a slave motor". WTF does that mean? Still no straight answer.

He told me all R32, R33, R34 and Stageas do this. Surely, everyone has an alarm on their Skylines/Stageas and can support or oppose this guys explanation?

I'm smelling BS. I'm thinking they're milking me. If its not BS can someone explain it to me?

When I had my 33 alarm installed I had to get the drivers door ACTUATOR installed.

Do you have KEYLESS entry now? or simply central locking? If you DONT have keyless entry, YES you need the ACTUATOR, as it only has a control switch for the passenger door (which has the actuator already)

If you have Keyless entry, then the drivers door will already have an actuator, not just a switch to operate other doors.

Hope this explains it a bit better

Thats kinda my thinking too. I have keyless entry. Push button, unlock doors. Simple.

So why can't they wire the alarm into this? :D

They should be able to! Atleast every car I've owned that has had keyless entry and I've put an alarm on has been done that way... I've got a great installer who does all my work if you want to take it to him instead, good prices and great bloke!

Ok, the thing people get confused about is the difference between "central locking" and "keyless entry".

If you have keyless entry everything is sweet, all doors will have motors in them, you press the button and all the doors unlock.

If you have central locking (on a skyline) the drivers door lock is basically a switch, when you turn the key it activates the motors on the other doors and unlocks them, and the reverse happens when you lock the car. There is no motor on the drivers door in this case as you are doing the unlocking.

Some cars have motors on all doors but still don't have keyless entry. This just means that the central locking setup works off of all doors, not just the drivers door. This setup will also work with an alarm without additional motors etc.

Basically, if the only way you can lock/unlock the drivers door is with a key, or manually from the inside, then you will require a new motor because A) you don't have one, or B) it's stuffed

I hope this helps

Aaron

Simple answer - It Can Be. Tell him there are already actuators in each door and he must connect them

mmmmhhhhh, this sounds too complicated

I had an auto watch alarm installed on my M35, didn't mention needing extra motors to make it work and I don't think they put one either.

If I unlock the car off the alarm or the key remote all doors unlock together.

If I use the door lock function next to the window switches the drivers door does not lock. (I am presuming it has a motor but does not work on all functions)

If I lock the drivers door manually all doors lock.

I would assume the C34 is not that different.

Good luck

Andy

Yeah I should have been more specific between 'central locking' and 'keyless entry'.

I have keyless entry. I can enter my car by either: pressing the unlock button on the key which opens all doors; unlocking the drivers door manually with key which also opens all doors!

They should be able to! Atleast every car I've owned that has had keyless entry and I've put an alarm on has been done that way... I've got a great installer who does all my work if you want to take it to him instead, good prices and great bloke!

Hmmm, sounds like guy was trying to baffle me with bullshit ... when in doubt, ask! PM me the details of your installer and I'll get in contact with him.

:D

the guy that installed the alarm on my missus car came with plenty of recommendations from NS.com users but we have had nothing but drama;s with it, and he has been the biggest fag to deal with... serioiusly thinking about getting someone else to fix up the job and then sending him the bill

When I had my alarm installed in the S15 they had to put a 2nd motor in for some reason too. I just agreed and they did it. Not sure why. An extra motor is stuff all cost these days, so just do it.

Otherwise go see John - he knows his shit.

A 2nd central locking motor was installed in my r33 when i have my alarm done. in the end i went and bought one from jaycar for 10 buck so that i could pass to the installer.
