eveyrone says a smic is good for 200. and its bullshit.

the car might run but it will defiantly suffer from heat stroke....especially on a bad batch of fuel or a exteamlly hot day.

i advise against gettn the safc....its useless at this point.

Lolz...let me rephrase...

In this case...it'd be the first thing i'd do...he already has an exhaust...and a 34smic...he also said he wanted to "feel" the difference...and if thats the case an safc or a better form of engine management would give the biggest gain in power and driveability...don't you think so?

a SAFC dosnt give thr car more power, it just unlocks more potential......uses the cars other parts more efficiently.

im very very confident if you put 2 cars together one havn a SAFC and one having a full exhaust FMIC and uped boost. it defiantly will produce more.

a SAFC is a stupid device anyway. why would u do half the ass job....why not get a complete engine management system.

do it once, do it right

he said $1000 to spend, a complete engine mangement system cost at least 1.5k + $500 on top for tuning. Not much benefit if you have a 95% stock skyline is there?

an SAFC would be more than enough for his needs provided he finishes off the exhaust and turns the boost up a little. All of that can be done under $1000

It surprises me how much dribble can come from some people...go back into your hole and stop giving wrong advice...

heat stroke? on a car? the term is heat soak...and a bad batch of fuel would hardly contribute to heat soak...it might cause detonation...but not heat soak in the fmic...

Next...why is the safc useless at this point...will it be more useful down the road with lets say a bigger turbo and more mods?

An safc does not add power and just unlocks power potential yeah? so an aftermarket ecu adds power then?

And as for that stupid comment about how a car with a fmic and more boost will produce more power...how much more boost can he safely wind into the stock turbo? and while an fmic will give some power...a tune with an SAFC or better a remap (which is less than $1000) will give more power everywhere across the rev range...more boost you say...whats stopping him from winding in 12psi into the car with the 34 smic and tune it with an safc or some sort of engine management...

Know what you're on about before you say anything...

lol sorry buddy

i did mean heat soak LOL. i do that sometimes BAHHAHA

but how the hell will a SAFC be useful later down the track if his deciding on mroe mods and turbo? i mean sure it will help but pfft if you were going down that part youd kinda learn to plan in advance.....ever play chess?

the man with a brain would go a complete engine management.

its cheaper in the long run and u and me both know will reward him with more gains.

i still stick by my choice of going full turbo back exhaust.......FMIC.....this will give him a base to work on later rather then unpluggin that stupid thing and wasting 500bux. wen he can pick a PFC for 1500 and be more better off.

the most he would be able to wind into his turbo is around 12-13psi. and thats on the limit. no chnace hell get anywhere near that with the factory ecu. but he wont need as much boost to make as much power with the FMIC and the exhaust.

my 2c but hey...i guess we see diff

x3

$1000 definitely limits things so a 2nd hand SAFC + tune and a 2nd hand dump easily under the budget. even has change for a cheap bleed valve. bang for buck mods.

In regards to "planning in advance"

After this i'm not goin any further with the cars mods and i don't have any specific power goals i'm trying to achieve

Why plan ahead, spend more than your budgeting for, when you have no specific goals and dont actually have the desire to go any further after spending the mentioned $1000?

So do what the gurus suggest.

The dump pipe, and the SAFC + tune. Your wallet will thank you for it at the pump :D Plus it will drive alot nicer. Im pretty confident you'l notice the difference.

I noticed a huge top end difference after fitting my split front/dump and 34SMIC.

Good luck!

i though he wanst modding after this?

and i think his budget was only 1000 clams not 1500 for a PFC + installasion and tuning costs?

i would maybe get split dump/front pipe from JJR and piggy back computer to fix ur A/F ratio's, i still need to get the front of my exhaust done then i'll be getting my ecu remapped.

just my thoughts on the topic,

good luck,

AiF

you have some good little mods to start with.

Here's a few to have a crack at;

1) ($250) Turbo dump pipe + heat wrap (very good mod) . The factory cast unit is rather crappy. You will pick up a little earlier boost and some power throught the rpm range.

2) ($125) Adjustable exhaust cam gear set to 4deg retard. Expect 10-15rwkw gain across the power band.

3) ($600 inc tune) S-AFC II or similar. Depending on other factors will give you 10-20rwkw , again across the power band.

* The R34 smic is a very good unit for the stock turbo and is presently not holding you back at all.

With these bits and some decent tyres and perhaps some pineapples ($90) you have an oppertunity to crack 12's on the 1/4 driven correctly.

Thats your $1k spent. :D

tell us more bout the exhaust cam. haven't considered it b4 and im curious. $125 inc labour? or does that come under tuning?

Good suggestions above (save for a couple), this is what I would do.

1. Finish that exhaust!! JJR dump/front pipe. $195 + shipping.

2. Get some boost control, and bump it up to 12psi. Turbotech manual valve - Less than $40 from ebay.

3. TUNE!! I would stay away from the S-AFC route and go for a Toshi remap of the stock ECU. Better value for money. $400-600

You will also be needing a clutch, so budget for that $800 +

Front/dump pipe from JJR;

$200~

JayCar Digital Fuel adjuster;

http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC...=&SUBCATID=

$80

JayCar Independent Electronic Boost Controller;

http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC...=&SUBCATID=

$80

JayCar Hand Controller;

http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC...=&SUBCATID=

$60

Thats about $420 for parts.

Then spend the rest for assembly/installation/tuning :)

And for all the people worried about heat stroke, you can always buy an intercooler water spray kit. :P

Save it & try not to waste it on your car..

wow how enlightening! thats some great advice!!!

I didn't realise i was looking for a financial adviser... i thought i asked whats the best way to increase my cars power on a budget of $1000 but you've answered my question completely!

Thanks everyone else for some good suggetions!

So far dump pipe looks like the go..

SAFC i still wanna look into along with toshi re-map as there still seems to be a bit of debating... so i'm not sure?

I don't think FMIC cause i've searched alot of threads and from what i've read, my 34 SMIC should be fine for these mods. I think... I hope..

Hey thanks for the suggestion...

Is the fuel adjuster and controller like the SAFC?

Who can tune that stuff?

And if i were to increase boost with the controller, whats the max it should be set at? any risk of spiking?

Hi mate. Congratulations on getting married.

I've read the thread and seen some great and also very sh!tty advice.

From what you've been told, my experience and your needs i'd say get a JJR split dump from Just Jap ($270) and a turbotech boost controller off Ebay ($30-40) and crank it to 10psi. You will get 'noticable' gains from these without much compromise.

Take it to a local tuner and ask for a few power runs to see what power you're making ($60-80), and also how the power curve looks. You might be able to have your timing advanced slightly (c. $100) to squeeze out the most power from your setup. This second step is optional but can give your power delivery an improvement. It gave me 10rwkw.

Other parts within the budget (like FPR or SAFC) aren't necessary as either the factory parts are sufficient or the gain will be minimal.

So that comes to a sensible but effective $480.

Put the rest of the cash in your pocket and take the wife to dinner :)

for the above post i.e the one before the above now, you tune the jaycar gear yourself - sydneykid has a good topic on this. if not, the kit comes with a great manual on how to tune it yourself. as for the boost controller question - you should only go as high as your turbo can handle.

Put the rest of the cash in your pocket and take the wife to dinner :P

i would have to agree, but better yet, put the whole $1000 into a more worthwhile investment. once your wife demands use for the back seat you will have to change cars anyways :) so think ahead and save up for a more practicle family car!

the fuel adjuster is like an SAFC, although it has a lot more load points, meaning it can be tuned very well (although it will take much longer to tune = $$)

In regards to who can tune it, i havent looked into that yet, I think Dr.Drift can tune them?

Max boost on stock r33 turbo is debatable, plenty of threads on sau. I think the limit is about 10-12psi?

    • Meh. Every single gear in my gearbox will crunch. I've been treating it nicely for >12 years now.
    • How fast are you doing the downshift? 4th gear was revised multiple times until 1998 to fix this issue. Synchro clips can fall out, synchros can wear. Most likely you're looking at a new transmission unfortunately. If you need to limp it until then double clutch downshifts into 4th.
    • Sorry I was being harsh there, but am I wrong? You can buy a M340i easily, and there's loads available second hand. A lot more workshops modifying them as well. How about getting parts for them? Don't get me wrong, I'd love a 400R, even a 4cyl (I looked at a few V36s before buying my shitbox BMW). Sadly Infiniti died in Aus and we're stuck with importing them as niche vehicles. Supply and demand
