Hey all,

I am about to buy new coil packs and before parting with my hard earned cash would like any feedback from people who have gone though the process of identifing ignition issues on their rb25's

Ok this is the current situation.

mods = pod / full exhaust / fmic / upped boost (using turbo tech)

R33 gts25t series 1

Previously :-

running 12.5 psi on stock ecu , stock turbo, and slight correction with safc.. Used copper plugs bcp6re (copper .8mm heat range 6) and the car pulled all the way to redline with no worries, no R&R no missing coughing farting nothing.. ran sweet, no black smoke on boost or gear changes..

Current :-

On the weekend, replaced 20000 km old copper plugs with new iridium plugs (.8mm heat range 6) , removed safc and wound boost back to 8psi. get a little bit of missing and hesitation no under load..

please note : the safc was never 'tuned' only had -1 % correction from 2500 rpm to red line which effectively bought me under the r&r threshold and allowed smooth power delivery across the rev range @ 12.5psi.. Well thats what I was thinking at the time..

Considering when I had the coppers in everything was sweet and now the motor runs smooth but missing under load on 8psi, is it wise to just spend the money on the coil packs and be done with it? Or revert to coppers.. The rationale behind switching from copper to iridiums was to increase the service interval on the plugs.

What do others think? Coils or cheap ass plugs again?

you will find a lot of cars getting up past 350 rwkws with the standard coils, mine included.

generally my rule of thumb is! if you have a problem? what was the last thing that i touched that was ascociated with the problem?

look at that first as its more then likely the reason for the issue.

there could be multiple issues with your car from the wiring where the safc was removed to plug gap, plug choice air leaks etc.

dont just fork out $$$$ for coils if yours were working perfectly before you touched it.

mine handle 24psi daily with no issues at all.

Yeah mine went over 350rwkw too.

I would have put coppers back in there. Increasing service intervals doesnt generally work.

Iridi's never last thier cost in terms of km's ive found. They are usually in need of replacement before their 100k

Did you gap the plugs yourself? You could have damaged the tip (they dont like being touched really)

I'd go back to coppers, the exact same plug you had before and see

Trident, I wound boost back as i was missing so figured id drop boost to try and aleviate the problem.

The iridiums i put in were gapped .8mm standard.. Cant remember the part number but its the one without the -11 on the end.

The coppers i pulled out looked really good for 20000k's actually looked like they could be re-gapped and last another 5-10k..

I will replace the irid's with the coppers i took out after checking the gaps and see if the car likes them better..

I spent some time down in the wiring loom ensure there were no shorts , exposed wires and the like when removing the safc... I am relatively confident the problem does not exist there. Though to my amazement there has been alot of wire hacking in there in the past, can see all the tape up wiring.. I will return there if coppers gapped right at 8psi cause me issues.

Thanks guys for the input, you have convinced me not to spend the moeny and to get off me ass and put the coppers back in...

unique1 lol read the post i said the ones without the -11.. meaning i got .8 mm plugs..

andhow problem solved.. f^cking cracked plug.. :) there ya have it.. pays to check everything properally as its going in..

Also i notice that the bcp6es are a taller plug then the bkr6eix <- is this not the correct iridium for rb25?

the above mention coppers seat into the coils so much better due to their height..

I am going to stick with my coppers for now 5x bkr6eix for sale 50 bucks plus postage. any takers????? oh they done 29 km's

Standard coils are great when in working order. Leave them alone.

x2 500rwhp @ 1.8 bar on stock coils. The only reason people see a diference going to splitfires is because thier old coils were dirty/busted and the splits are new. I did the dremel the inside trick and they were like new.

dont go paying pounds sterling. go to your local auto parts store.

buy the coil pack for a 3.8 litre v6 holden commodore engine

1 meter of 8 gauge wire

3 meters of 16 gauge wire

one diode with the capabilty to with stand 12 volt 100 amp's (ask the guy at dick smith's)

6 spade connectors to plug into the holden commodore coil pack

6 1 meter long bosch ignition leads

6 Ngk spark plugs with a .8 ml gap

then go to your local auto electrician and tell em you want a wasted spark system, and need the car back by lunch time..... ;)

After my latest episode, it makes me wonder how many people actually need new coils or if the problem is something else..

wrong plug etc...

Can anyone comment on the iridium bkr6eix being the incorrrect plug for a series one r33? the top part of the plug just is not as long as the coppers i mentioned abaove and hence does nto seat as well into the actual coil...?

Anyhow I am sticking with the coppers.. Just curious.

hey dude, i was going through the same problem! i purcashed a pack of iridiums! and my car was missing pass 4000RPM and was missing to redline... I had em on for about 4months and i got really angry and it took me that whole 4months through researching through the fourms and so i decided one day to go to Supercheap and buy these cheap spark copper plugs! i cant rememba which one it was.. but it totaled up to 24.90, they were pre gapped to .08mm and heat range was 6 i think? im not at home atm so yeh when im home i'l put up

Yeah there the coppers i had been using and am now using again..

bcp6es i think .. heat range 6 and gapped at .8mm and never miss a beat..

But F'it i just left the coil cover off and that saved 5 mins on a plug change for the future.. beside once ya do it a few times it takes like 30 mins max if ya dont piss arround

    • Hey was wondering if you ended up installing the R33 GTR speed sensor - I found one too and wanted to confirm it's a direct swap into the R34 6 speed?
    • After 23 years of owning a Skyline, finally had the latch go.  Followed this guide,  works like a dream again. Great Guide 👍
    • Hi all,   I’ve got the biggest lot of problems with my R33 GTS-T   It was a freshly rebuilt 25th anniversary RB25DET (plastic cas, neo cams) probably 6 years ago now   The engine was running so well but I fkd up badly and trusted someone I’d known for 10 years that was well known around Plazmaman for his welding and fab work. I added a lovely photo of some of his previous work. Not sure why my car was worked on by whoever did this shit     I’m normally someone who would never open myself up to something like this, I still can’t believe I did it. Trusting him literally fkd it all up for me. Everything has been a struggle, like it’s almost been 6 years that’s how much I’ve just on and off been trying to work it all out.    All I wanted was a car that danced down low, like full boost from around 3~3500rpm to redline, don’t really care what power it puts down (if it ever does) but I just wanted it to be quick to get on it.    He recommended the turbo to get, I picked Hypergear but he told me to get the front 4” with a T4 and 0.68 rear housing.    I was expecting all these beautiful welds, tidy fab work and paid for it to be ready to go to a tuner when I got it back.    I got a car back that was an absolute mess, I actually couldn’t believe it was my car anymore. I don’t think you could even call what he did welds, they’re disgusting.    So I stripped everything he touched off it and with every bolt I loosened it just got worse and worse.    I covered it and literally built and finished another car in the meantime but now it’s getting to the point where I really want my Skyline back.   Its a struggle because I paid him to do all this shit because I didn’t know how to and now I’ve had to try and figure it all out omg    Please excuse the bird shit horrible welds, I’ve got my show pony car and am so beyond dealing with this car I don’t even really care at this point.    If someone told me about what he did to my car I wouldn’t have believed them but it happened to me. It was unbelievable. He went missing, my car went missing, it came back missing parts, the straight af chassis rails bore the scars of being dragged up a trailer backwards, even the sandwich plate was bent. Everything was leaking and open to whatever fell into it, rounded off/ missing bolts, power steering oil and coolant everywhere, no gaskets, parts stolen off it, even managed to damage the sump pan.   Promised me he’d finish the car, knew what it meant to me, I paid him thousands and thousands just for him to trash it. He told me he was fully licensed and insured, come to find out he’d cancelled his ABN, so obviously no insurance. I had laid up insurance on the car and would’ve been covered but I was scared they would’ve written it off or because the business was no longer trading I’d still be liable.    He was supposed to:  New fully custom mild steam pipe exhaust manifold with turbo location moved from factory position to high forward mount. (I don’t know if it is a mild steam pipe, I’ve got a funny feeling the waste gate isn’t in a very good position and I don’t think the outlets off each cylinder are equal) 4” custom stainless steel dump with external gate (he re-plumbed it) Cut and shut OEM intake manifold with throttle reposition (I ended up doing the throttle reposition) Box in pod filter (left out) New 100cel catalytic converter (pretty sure it’s there but unsure if it’s 100cel) Front mount intercooler piping fabricated to suit (all smashed up and rusty holes where he was supposed to make it look standard where fmic piping passes through. I don’t even think my front bar is going to fit 🙄) Custom 5” intake pipe from pod to turbo (didn’t come with it so had to do something to make it work with the Z32 afm)   Engine: Full cylinder head service & machining  Brand new valves Precision upgraded spring kit Engine block honed New bearings  New piston rings  New ARP conrod bolt kit New ARP head studs Cometic head gasket VRS kit   ATR43SS2 ball bearing turbo 0.68 rear housing  Turbosmart 45mm external wastegate (got delivered to the fab bloke, I’ve got no idea what spring is in it, I’m assuming the one that came pre installed) Walbro 260 fuel pump  Nismo 740cc injectors (tested to 880) Spitfire coil packs GCG FMIC RB25DET manual 5 speed 4:11 rear diff   I’ve got an Apexi Power FC in it atm, I was hoping to just get it to operating temp to make sure everything was okay before towing to a tuner but it’s over-fuelling too much. I don’t think that’s going to happen so i think I’m going to get either a Link G4 or Haltech for it. What do you guys recommend? I can’t work out the power FC so just gonna give up on that one     It’s got an exhaust leak coming from somewhere I can’t see 🙄    The fuel pressure was steady but now it like drops from 40 to 20psi randomly (noticed this yesterday)    I’ll attach pics of the shit he put on my car and the engine bay now as it sits    I really just need some help, I need a tuner in Sydney I can trust, I’d like to be with the car while it’s being tuned if possible, I know it looks terrible but unfortunately I’ve just got to put up with it for now and fix the cosmetic stuff later   Do you guys think the manifolds are going to be okay? Or do I throw the exhaust manifold and try again?   I don’t even think these combinations are going to work tbh   I know everything I fitted was rated to be able to take at least 400kW but most rated higher    If you’ve gotten this far I really really appreciate it 🙏 I don’t mind if you trash me or the car, I made a rookie error and f**k I’ve paid for it. As you’ll see 🙄
    • From everything I’ve heard you’ll be waiting a long time for  the parts to arrive
    • Have you looked at the workshop manual?
