the reason oneside shines further then the other is because its not aligned properly..

(dont know if anyone has mentioned that yet but i couldnt be bothered reading the whole thread)

If you're talking about further as in forward, it'll be the alignment, but from left to right, the left headlight will always spread more to the side than the right. The right doesn't spread much compared to the left only because there's traffic heading towards you on that side. Headlight was designed to lower the chance of the light blinding on coming traffic.

Just thought I should say...

How much did you guys pay for your HID kits? I presume they are simple to install - install a globe the same way you change your normal globes, and then mount the electronics somewhere.

There is a group buy kit for $145, seems too cheap.

I bought my kit for about $240, but that was over a year and a half ago.

These kits should be plug and play, but if you're installing some in an R32 with H1 globes, you could run into problems as discussed in the other HID thread.

145 is cheap for HID kit... it would be most likely china made kit. I have seen some of these installed, and they are still pretty good.

Got mine awhile ago,.. however i think supervision around the AU$400 mark...

Somone correct me if im wrong tho.

And they are easy as to install.. plug and play really.

That's got HEAPS of glare. There's no clear cutoff line at all.

The hot spots aren't too bad. I don't think the standard one's are any better, but the glare...

Here's an example of my head lights. I've got an R32 with the projector headlights with a HID kit I bought about 1.5 years ago so the technology wasn't the best, but I don't see if being much better now.

It's just as bad, but with the projector headlights, you can at least see a cutoff line. The glare isn't as bad, you can tell where it's meant to be bright or dark. The hot spots are really noticeable.

Here's an example of what headlight beams should look like.

Compare that to our headlights. There's no glare or hot spots at all.

hmmm well either way im happy i guess.

So i just got back home.. Went thru a rbt - fair few cops there.. they didnt say anything

When i got out of the rbt, drove for abit and saw a cop going in the opp direction.. he/she didnt flash the lights at me.

I have noticed tho, that my lights dont go above the boot (car in front).

I think its best if i get a friend to drive my car and drive another car in front and see for myself.

But these hids put my high-beams to shame lol..

Give it another 5 years and every standard car will have hids or similar.

adam - what you mean by hot spots?

Edited by siddr20

Yeah, quite a few people on the roads are installing HID kits now.

When people talk about hot spots, they're talking about the spread in the light. Take a look at my headlight's light for example...

post-32186-1209189248_thumb.jpg

See how the light isn't spread evenly?

Compare it to this...

post-32186-1209189298_thumb.jpg

The light is spread evenly all round.

When you use HID's in a headlight which were designed for halogens, the focus point of the HID globe will be in the wrong position and the headlight housing will 'use' that light in the wrong way. The headlight creates hot spots and glare.

Your headlight's spread of light isn't too bad. I think it's because HID kits have been around for a while now. They've made the focus point of the HID globe to roughly the same position as where the halogen's focus point was.

I haven't had any troubles with the police either with my lights, but I have a feeling they'll crack down on them. Everyone is installing them.

i got my OSRAM set of HID's for my R33 S1 like 5 months ago never had any problems with police or anyone flash me . I guess just the design of the headlight is good for HID. i dont get stray light or anything they are perfect . I run 6000k bulbs which are very white

ah yup understood now :P Thanks for explaning it to me adam..

Well yup you are right, my hotspots are pretty good.

Its sorta like a even spread. Well to my eyes lol!!

When im free, i will get a friend to drive my car and i will drive another car in front and see what it feels like...

Keep you posted with that.

I haven't had any troubles with the police either with my lights, but I have a feeling they'll crack down on them. Everyone is installing them.

True. I wonder how they will police that.

Nice work guys. Its good to see a bit of R & D on this topic. Great photo's too.

I have also installed a good quality set of HID's from Germany. Although the halogen lens/relector assemblies are not ideal for HID, they are still heaps better than the original setup.

What you really need is a free form reflector that is designed for HID. (Like the ones on new cars where you can see the bulbs). Some of the earlier HID's also use a projector type setup (like the series 3 R33's).

Also all OEM's have to fit self leveling systems to their headlight assemblies and washers for the lenses. This is because HID light is highly sensitive to vibration and anything that gets in its way. (Causing the light to splay around all over the place).

Having said that though, anything is better than the original H1 halogens.

Just be careful guys. Two days after putting mine in I got pulled over by the cops and kindly asked to make a trip for a full EPA test. Not fun.

I know it wasn't the lights but I think it was a bit like the fly and a bug zapper type scenario.

Yep, to have HIDs in your car legally, you must have leveling systems and cleaners. Cleaners are pretty much there to clean the headlights to minimise glare for oncoming traffic. Leveling is to avoid blinding on coming traffic.

Believe it or not, most cars which come out of the factory with HIDs aren't legal. They can get defected for them, but don't. Most of the factory cars have the cleaners, but not the leveling system. Mercs and BMW should have them, but Honda and the less pricey cars wouldn't.

I hate driving in front of a car running HIDs end of story. hahah. My car (the ke70) is lowered and it feels like every single car is running high beams. Having HIDs will blind me, but that's my fault for having such a low car.

Edit:

True. I wonder how they will police that.

It's not too hard to tell which cars are running those HID kits. The car will have a whiter/bluer light and more glare than most other cars on the road. All the police need to do is "randomly" pull them over and check.

talking to me nizmo_freek?

Yea i can take one for you if you wish.

Perhaps tomorrow night, i will fiddle around with my SLR and take some for you!!

Instead of the normal digi camera.

Yea i was talking to u, that would be kol if you could take a few pics from the front with the light on, would be interesting to see what it looks like!

I'm sorry sid, but you are kidding yourself a bit. yours look very glarey, pointed quite high, and have no clear cut-off at all. I would be pretty pissed if you were driving behind me at night time.

also your comment about the left pointing further forward than the right is wrong. that is how it's supposed to be mate to avoid blinding on coming traffic with your right head light. for that reason the right side will always be aimed a little lower. I will get you some pics of the factory HIDs on my legacy and you will see just how different they are.

Ahh makes sense.. Cool i got it..

Well im gonna get my mum to drive in front of me tomorrow night to test it out.. I will see what she says

I showed her my hids the other night, and she said hope it does glare ppl otherwise she was gonna hit me lol.. so lets test it out hahah

yea would be cool to see pics beerbaron..

thanks for drawing that figure adam.. explains a lot!!

:D Do I sense sarcasm? Because I'm sure if you don't know what it's supposed to show, it just looks like a drawing from a grade 1 kid. hahhah

For those that don't know what the Paint pics are showing, the first is the cutoff line (like when you face a wall with your headlights on), second pic is a birds eye view of what your beam would look like. The 'dip' in the first pic isn't that much on most cars, but in post #29, the second pic, you can see a little dip.

    • Hey guys. I have a 400R on its way to Australia from Japan currently and have a few questions I’m hoping others may be able to help with.   Wondering if anyone here has had any luck getting the Sat nav unit to work in Australia!? Assuming the Stereo is as simple as a band expanded and tv won’t work?  Seeing as they’re based off a Q50 which is Aus delivered is there any way to link that system to the nav? Nav modules and head unit are different part numbers and appear slightly different at the rear with plug ins etc. can I put my xtrail sd card into the rv37 and will that convert the maps or update to Australian? Has anyone got any advice here?     also has anyone fitted the factory remote start and Security system once it’s landed in Australia? I put an enquirey to Nissan Japan in via a third party, and they suggested it needs a Nissan Japan dealers device to setup and couldn’t guarantee if one here could do it or not. They can supply and I can physically fit it but to setup I would need a dealers device. Any information here would be appreciated also. I’ve seen one here with it fitted already prior to leaving Japan at a dealer/inporter, so clearly passes compliance and works when fitted Japan and doesn’t need changing here.      also, does the tyre inflation sensors work here? Does anything change with them when the vehicle arrives? Where are they actually situated? I’ve read they have batteries and they need to changing at times and seems like resetting involves the nav system?    any help here would be appreciated and any other aust specific information to help would be great. Looking forward to see what the current generation skyline is like and eager to see how many of the gadgets can be utilised here.  Thanks in advance
    • Do need to take it with a pinch of salt. One of the adapter failures, they clearly had setup issues with the flywheel.  One of the slipping ones I spoke to and it was pretty clear the throwout was riding, rather than fix, just swapped to a new clutch.    These clutches are being put in anything from 5k offroad 4x4 beaters, GR yaris, 500hp commodores to 1200hp barra monsters. Bound to be some issues in some of them when they are not a simple bolt in affair due to the changes in height.    There is a lot going on in this picture and unless I did the job myself no way to tell what really happened.
    • I did this mod in 2019  You just have to modify the top bracket of the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU so it sits more upright and closer to the back seat and run a good quality positive battery lead from the engine bay, the negative lead i just bolted down to the body in the boot.
    • Damn... Not the feedback I want to hear.
