Hey pplz,

just thought id clarify for anyone who is a bit confused about their r34 gtr getrag 6-speed, the gearbox oil should actually be serviced with the toyota supra getrag 6-speeds special fluid which has been produced with the proper specifications that getrag requires.

the oil is an automatic transmission fluid and will cost you about 60-120 dollars per litre and you will require 2 of them, the oil can be ordered from toyota or other jap part importers and should be known as the v160 oil.

both getrags in the supra and skyline are an identical box minus the transfer case.

dont risk using any other fluid apart from this (redline, castrol etc)

anyways just thought id post the info as ive just done the service with my vspec 2. Oh and for the engine i used motul 10w40 300v chrono which is the bomb!

Hey guys, I know this has been covered to death but I've been advised by Nissan to use their Nissan Matic D ATF for my Getrag 6spd in my R34GTR. Apparently it is the same as Castrol Transmax Z.

???

Never heard of the Matic D stuff but id rather stick to either the v160 or transmax Z; Im using transmax in my transfer case and it feels great so in future ill be using it in my gearbox too.

You have an amazing car and you only wanna stick to tried and proven fluids rather than taking the risky aadvice from a retail worker

Yeah, nah it wasn't a 'retail' worker at Nissan. The guy is actually pretty good and he's in the service department, knows alot about import GTR's R32 to R34. Several have referred to him for advice from Nissan here in WA. He just said that Nissan Matic D (which is actually used in the transfer case and Atessa system) is just Castrol Transmax Z rebranded. And as I've had no luck in getting Transmax Z (as I've been advised that it has been discontinued) I wanted to find an alternative. The Toyota v160 oil is also discontinued, but Nissan can get the factory gearbox oil used in Getrag's from Japan at $120 per Litre. No thanks, that's just way too expensive! I've gone with either Motul or Redline (ATF fluid) for my Getrag through workshops that have used it on other customer's Getrag's with no problems so far.

Nissan Matic D ATF is actually lower spec (dextron 3 equivalent) compared to Transmax Z (fully synthetic)

Not too sure about WA - but here in Vic. most auto shops have heaps of it in stock.

hey guys.

just "slightly" off topic.

i own a R34 GTR 99 V-Spec..

im noticing that the gear changes are sometimes quite rough / rigid (like theres no lube) on my getrag..

im hoping that my guys that complianced and serviced my GTR changed oil as part of the checks/service.

is it a simple case of just changing the gearbox oil or could there be other causes.

cheers.

hey,

thanks for the reply Angus.

i found "a" solution. I didnt let my GTR warm up "enough". Since i got a twin plate in there, that shit takes ages to optimise and ive noticed that once its all warmed up, the gears are smooth..

if cold then the gears are rigid.

though i prolli should change the gearbox oil soon as well..doesnt hurt to flush it out and restock new oil in.
