yeah I agree that our prisons are way too comfy and punishment for certain crimes are also pretty soft but the Aussie justice system (agree with it or not) is built around rehabilitation which means keeping crooks out of prison at all cost, hence the amount of slaps on the wrist they get. They figure a petty thief will not be rehabilitated in prison, will only learn new crimes and once released will be unemployable (so the tax payer supports him) and will commit bigger crimes to survive.

Money is another issue......last time I checked (long time ago) we pay at least $100,000 a year for each crook incarcerated.

A better solution to our justice system (as barbaric as it may sound) is the introduction of public flogging for petty crimes which works a treat in countries like Singapore etc and its free for the tax payer.

Civil lawsuits and compensation should also be alot easier to pass on from the crook to the victim.....make them pay you with either their possessions or work for you for free for a certain period of time.

^^^ I agree Pete - but note that a reasonable chunk of the current $100,000 per year to house prisoners is the great quality food, computers, TV and all other luxuries they enjoy. Take these away and it would no doubt be much cheaper. Also smaller cells = jam more prisoners in.

It would be a slow(ish) process, but once would-be criminals find out how harsh my proposed jails would be, many would not commit the crimes for fear of the harsh punishment quality and duration.

Yes, public floggings is an awesome idea. I have been spruking the cutting off of a finger punishment as implemented in some Middle-eastern countries, but that may be a bit harsh. Public humiliation and flogging would work a treat.

i disagree Pete if you want a job doesn't mater if you've been in jail your still employable, a lot of the aforementioned criminals only want to easy option thinking there owed if for some injustice they've had dealt to them

dont forget the pee bucket that sit's next to your head while you sleep 6 men to a 2 man cell showers once a month pheewwwey

no canteen privilege's no $1.65 a day pay for being in jail (yes that's right us tax payers pay criminals to be in jail), no swimming pool (most country jails have pools)

"if you want a job"............thats always the million $$$ question and generally the answer is no.

After all, once they are released and on a release program, authorities & rehab officers need to know their whereabouts for a set period of time so they jump the long queues with the cheap housing trust accommodation and end up in a small unit thats more comfortable than the cell they were in with more government hand outs and dirt cheap rent.

So why would they want to work.

Humiliation & public flogging is free and they can go back to work the next day.........or as soon as they can walk again.

normally you have to be released to family or a fixed address if you have no family and all that then they may get you a HT house this im not sure of

if you were inside that long you may be institutionalised, or you may have done studies usually maybe sometimes sorry older people reflect on what they've done and try to sort there shit out

young people couldn't care less and just want the free hand outs again

there's arguments for both sides really

^^^^ easy solution:

1) Make jails MUCH, MUCH more uncomfortable - they are relative havens of luxury now, compared with how some people live. Once you have committed and been convicted of a crime, you lose your right to any luxury. No bed mattresses or pillows, 6' x 6' single occupant cell, 1 hour exercise a day, basic meals in cell, no socialising with other prisoners except in the exercise yard, NO internet, NO TV or other entertainment. Take away ALL their basic rights except food and a little exercise. Once someone has been to jail he will NEVER want to go back, and will think hard about this before re-committing once let out.

2) triple the punishment for all crimes and widely publicise this. Crime = punishment - no more suspended sentences - PUNISH THEM

3) equal penalties for all races - the gang of 69 being a prime example. They keep being let off, only to commit more and more crimes, being more and more brazen. Race is no excuse for crimes - you always have a choice.

The only people to suffer if we do these things are criminals. Sooner or later they will wake up and actually be deterred by actually being punished, rather than the pathetically lax system we have at the moment.

:laughing-smiley-014: Last time i checked it was the gang of 49 :D

Guys... some punk scratched a guy's Merc in Singapore coz he felt like it, he got caught and got sentensed for 3 whip lashes...

and they arent the whip people use for fun either... this guy couldnt lie on his back for 2.5 months...

THATS WAT WE NEED!

I've got a whip ... the real thing too

I remember being able to do the Man From Snowy River thing ... crackin a whip on horseback. Wonder if I can still do it? ;)

Yes all this stuff it what I was on about hey. I do understand that people need a second chance in life, but not a dozen chances & this is the problem.

It also stems back to the penalties that younger people receive for committing crimes. They know they can get away with it, without any real penalty & by the time they are penalised for their crimes when they get older, it's already too late & they will always be criminals regardless of what kind of rehabilitation they are put though. Some people just go beyond the point of no return.

Having said that the penalties are no where near harsh enough & that means there is no incentive to stop committing crimes too. I've heard the term several times, 'all humans should have basic rights' well these crims in jail seem to have a hell of a lot more than 'basic' rights. What human should have the right to watch TV or play Playstation, when they've made someone else's life a living hell.

I also think they should be made to work a certain amout while they are in jail to contribute back to the public what they've taken, & until they've completed that required amount of work (whatever it may be) they don't get let out. Maybe then they'd have an appreciation for how hard some people work to get what they want, rather than try to take shortcuts.

On another note, I'm definitely not going to be taking my car to work again. Rang the crash repairer today & it's already up to over $3600 in parts that I require, a lot more than I was expecting.

Time for a daily me thinks, not real happy about it as I'd rather drive my Skyline all the time, but it's just not worth it now with so many 'too soft to do the hard yards' people out there.

thats a shame you feel that way Jared about driving your car hopefully time will heal that wound and maybe a better alarm that you can trust maybe with a proximity lazer like the star wars program mentioned when we were still in school :)

i guess @ 3600 you will be claiming on insurance
