Hey guys, been procrastinating again looking at skylines I want to buy and somethings confusing me. Im looking at GTST 33's and some people are saying they are all wheel drive, some are saying they are rear and one person even said it was front. I know a lot of different variations came out, are some different? Could someone say which skylines are what? would be awesome thanks.

there are no front wheel drive R32,R33,R34 skylines

R32 - 1989 to 1994 (1992 onwards is GTR only)

BNR32 - 2.6 lite twin turbo, all wheel drive, GTR - manual 5 speed only

HR32 - 2.0 litre single turbo, rear wheel drive, GTST - auto and manual 5 speed (boot sticker will say GTS-T)

HCR32 - 2.0 litre single turbo, all wheel drive, GTS4 (i think its HCR32) - auto and manual 5 speed

R33 - 1993 to 1998

BCNR33 - 2.6 litre twin turbo, all wheel drive, GTR - manual 5 speed only

ECR33 - 2.5 litre single turbo, rear wheel drive, GTST - auto and manual 5 speed (boot sticker will say GST25T)

ENR33 - 2.5 litre non turbo, all wheel drive, GTS4 - auto and manual 5 speed

R34 (1999 to 2002) - 1999 onwards is GTR only

BNR34 - 2.6 litre twin turbo, all wheel drive, GTR - manual 6 speed only

ER34 - 2.5 litre single turbo, rear wheel drive, GTST - auto (tiptronic) and manual 5 speed

Wow awesome info, thanks paulr3, thats a great help in finding what I want. I find it weird that some people dont even know what they are driving. One last thing, are the AWD constant. Or does it switch on? If so does it work out when you need it or do you turn it on manually?

as kris said its a computer controlled 4wd system

its not like your typical land cruiser that has hi and low range gears and rear and 4wd options

the GTR and GTS4 have a front diff and transfer case but its computer controlled and you can't just choose it etc

basically its rear wheel drive, until you loose traction

the GTR and GTS4 4wd system watch the speed sensors on the rear wheels, well actually they are the ABS sensors

and once these wheels loose traction, thus they spin really fast, the speed of each wheel is faster but the vehicle speed is slow

it uses this condition to detect "SLIP" and then it engages the front clutch to the transfer case, which engages the front diff

the level of engagement is based on how hard the wheels are spining. it also looks at letaral G-sensors in the car

and uses this to detect the car sliding or slipping around a corner, and if it detects this condition (lets say car sliding to the right out of a corner)

then it will apply some power to the front diff to help gain traction.

there is a latency delay between when the rear wheels slip, to the time the fronts will grip so its not a true "always-on" 4wd system

some other GTR models such as the vspec have a faster 4wd computer so they latency or delay is less

the GTR 4wd system is always on and you cant disable it, unless you pull the fuse out or the system has failed

4wd light on the dash will indicate this. vspec version has SLIP as well on the dash which will illuminate when the vspec system detects traction loss

on the GTR in the centre console there will be a front torque gauge, this is in kgcm2 (torque) and it will increase when the car transfers power to the front

so if you sit at the lights and bag it up, once the car fries the rear wheels and the computer activates the front clutch pack, the front torque guage will move upwards and power will come out the front wheels

more other useless info;

the gtr is a rear wheel drive car converted to front wheel drive

the evo lancer and the subaru are a front wheel drive car converted to rear

they basically have a central computer system, a front or centre diff and transfer a % of power to the front or rear on traction loss

neither of them will transfer 100% to one drivetrain, nor where they designed to, ie you cant make the GTR move all power to the front

or make the evo move all power to the front (without lots of hacking and driveline modifications anyway)

the best model reference site i have found is;

http://www.motortraders.net/imports/select...e&period=75

Nissan > Skyline > January 1996 to 1997

and it will list all the skylines during that build - which allows you check if the model is legit

    • A locally delivered Infiniti have remote start installed but don't come with the remote start key. You need a new remote start key and they just need it programed. And this is different to making/programing a new key that just starts the car.
    • Cheers, and cheers for sharing so much of the build and also sharing the glimpse of what turns out to bring a lot of us poor decision makers together haha.  I do recommend learning more about how to manage it, if not considering getting a  formal diagnosis.  The discussion with the psychiatrist I got my diagnosis through was quite eye opening, things I'd not even considered to be ADHD related and hadn't mentioned were things she asked about out of the blue and were common themes with people with my flavour of ADHD.   It's not a label for people who are hyperactive and ill-attentive, there's more to it than that and some of it can be much more challenging or damaging - though there are of course two sides to the thing, and a lot of the stuff we have to go through and work on to live with it make us effectively "better" at other things as well. Aside from the fact that there is some argument I could have a bit of ASD seasoning in there (came up during the diagnosis, and neurodiverse things seem to not stay as a cookie cut) I suspect you need to learn more about ADHD if you are puzzled about how hyperfocus could possibly apply.  I *do* personally use "superpower" with quotes deliberately, but it's 100% an ADHD thing due to the exact reason that lack of focus is also an ADHD thing... Loosely speaking the inattentive side of ADHD isn't the inability to focus, it's the inability to control where the focus goes.  Not being able to sleep because brain is more interested in thinking about a stupid thing I said to a girl I liked 30 years ago, not being able to focus on work because my brain is more keen on putting together the torque management strategy we're going to try out with a drag car next weekend, not being able to focus on a conversation with someone I WANT to listen to and respect because there is a flickering light in my peripheral vision.    If I could just stop work and build the torque management setup right there and then I'd not hear anything else until it was done.
    • Maybe you should do some more reading.  Google positive effects of ADHD and you'll get your answers.  One of my personal downsides of ADHD has been talking before I think.   Maybe you have it too?
    • Excuse me for butting in....but which part of ADHD can be considered a superpower? I would have though it far more likely that some ASD comorbidity is more likely to be contributing to an ability to hyperfocus on something. ADHD being aimed somewhat in the other direction. My shed looks like your shed. My whiteboard list of unfinished projects has entries going back 15 years. I know what you're talking about - I just struggle to connect ADHD to the results being discussed.
    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
