Custom Fibreglassing?

Hey all.

Im in need of a complete step by step guide for custom fibreglassing.

wanting to do a new custom boot for my car.

i've had no experience so really need a complete guide for dummies.

everything from how to do it, wat materials i need and where to buy the materials.

if i searched long enough i'm sure i'd find one, but i'm being dragged away from the

computer as we speak by the gf. Apparently she's hungry and needs to be fed lol.

Your best bet would be to buy a DIY fibreglassing kit from repco or bunnings. They usually include instructions and have all the necessary things you need.

Firstly, what are you wanting to fiberglass? is it a custom body kit, or just some speaker/gauge pods? ill go through the steps of either or both if you like, i am just about to start reparing the front spoiler of my Bluebird, some arsehole kicked it and shattered it into lots of pieces, i can take fotos of that, which will give you a guide if you like. As for buying the stuff, i go to a place in fairfield (melbourne), they have all the stuff you need for 'glasssing. ill find the address and let you know.

Well look in the yellow pages for a fiberglass shop.. fair few around..

couple of diff methods you can use buti made custom boot for sound system (pics at home though) i did with:

you need the polyester resin, catalyst, fiberglass sheets, roller(fiberglass roller), brush, measuring cup, acetone.

you simply add correct mix of polyester resin and catalyst (fiberglass shop will give a mix depending on how quick you want it to dry.. you then paste the resin onto the surface you will fiberglass.. then lay a sheet of fiberglass then paste another coat of mix onto the top.. then roll out all the air bubbles. then repeat with another sheet, then paint, roll... etc until you reach the thickness desired. then leave to dry.. you then simply sand flat, bog if necessary (i did cause first go at fiberglassing and was shitty lol) then primer it and paint.. wolah..

tips however.. it is VERY messy (if your amatuer)

use the acetone to wash everything (smells like nail polish remover) it is clean gets the resin off and is safe, if the resin is left on anything (roller, brush...) then dont expect to use them again

whatever you fiberglass to will not come off!!! so if you want to remove anything then line it with vaseline or some substance... fiberglass shop will recommend something

unless you tape everything in your boot it is advised to spray your chassis with the substance as you will get overspray if done in your boot.. also then it is arkward to work in your boot..

and finally if you dont fiberglass straight to the car put some foam or rubber or something that will take the impact as the fiberglass will make a noise as it hits the car..

PS. coming from experience unles you can practice and get better i highly recommend paying a professional to do it.. heaps more cost but they do a great job
