**update** Running Untuned With New Turbo In!...waiting On Pump/injectors/afm

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, an update to my previous topic, which is stil bellow if you want to check what was happening before:

Anyway, I got too excited and decided to put the new turbo in... took about 8 hours... after a few little dramas...... which Tao(Hypergear) helped me fix at NO cost and was fantastic about the whole situation and said he would help his customers when neccessary just because he wants to make everyone happy... the car was going well...

and it now is absolutely flying... on standard turbo injectors and pump it is at about 93% at about 6,000 so I don't rev any higher... but I swear... it boosts straight away! as soon as I change gears at about 2,500-3,000 there is already about 5 psi cumming in and by 3,300-3,400 I am on 11 psi and it feels really strong with this turbo... alot more then the standard turbo at 12 psi........ My actuator wont go much higher then 13 psi because it is soft... because of the n/a compression I didn't want to go any higher in the start.. but man... this thing at 18 psi would rip

so I now just have the injectors/ afm/ fuel pump to put in ( and tune)... but it already feels so quick....least the biggest thing is out the way :(

what do you guys recon of the turbo?... I have never had a new or bigger turbo before... does this all sound about right? what should happen with the tune?

Kind regards

Adam

hey guys,

I recently got my new hypergear tr43 and I have that sitting on my floor as well as a set of nismo 740cc injectors and a z32 with plug. the only thing left that I have to get to put into the car before a tune is a new fuel pump.

I plan to get it tuned by Dr. Drift in a few weeks after I have cash for the fuel pump asap... my question is... can I drive the car (!very sensibly!) with the injectors, afm, turbo and soon a fuel pump without a tune? or any combination of those... ie... turbo and afm or injectors and fuel pump......or is it just too risky?

othernwise I will have to put it all in the day before I take it to Sam (Dr. Drift)?

I have a power fc + commander, as well as a spare stock ecu... which one would be better to drive around on?

Thanks in advance,

Adam

im in a similar boat but i have a safe tune until i have time to take it to the dyno. i have Uprated fuel pump

updated 660cc injectors Apexi Power FC ECU GT35 BB Turbo, and i get about 200kms to the tank driving like a granny .

Wow that makes me look even worse, my car has stock turbo any everything just the mod's in my sig and driving (as conservatively as i can lol) i only get about average 260km's to a full tank and ive averaged it on about 3-4 times ive filled up to the max and checked how many Km's..

But yeah WYTSKY ive been told by alot of people you'd be best to put it all on before the tune because it will run horrid

Z32 and larger injectors = the car wont run, least of all from Bentleigh to Sam's workshop

Ring City Wide towing (Jack, he is a member here), get it towed there and bobs your uncle.

Cheers

thank you very much for the info guys, I hate to say it but your bad experiences do help others :(

that is as much as I thought would happen... leaning out...running horribly and going through heaps of fuel...

i was hoping i would be able to fit everything except the injectors.. i am surprised at the z32...so if i put that in it wont go?

and yes r31nismoid... it will be a fair bit of a haul from bentleigh.... I may take the towing route up there...

Thanks again guys, you've saved my car once again.

Adam

how to enter the new injector sizes and select the z32 are covered in the PFC FAQ in my signature

if you know the injector size and latency you can dial them in

you can select the VG30 afm from the airflow menu

this should be enough to get it to run and idle

if you get it wrong or trash the pants off it = you'll risk the motor

there's no reason you couldn't get it to run if you put the turbo, injectors and fuel pump in, when I put my Z32 on i didn't cut my old plug off i spliced the wires i needed to and left it with 2 plugs, so it can easily be put back to stock if needed, do this before you take it to get tuned so you can change over the AFM when you get there save your self a couple of tanks of fuel for the price of the tow!

Set your injector correction to 50% based of stock flow injector 370cc ( if you have other than standard injectors this may be diff), don't know the latency correction but this isn't that important tuner will sort it

the rest will take care of itself, pop the AFM in when you get to his workshop (5 minutes) and presto. I don't think you're taking a big gamble driving it untuned unless you go boosting all over the place, self control and you'll save a fair whack of coin.

Good luck if you're goging to give it a try.

Cheers Matt.

if you have the fc and hand set there's no reason you can't set the afm and injector size and latency corrections and drive sensibly to the dyno. It has a reasonable base map.

It's not that hard. pauls faq covers it all.

And the joy of the pfc is that if it knocks, the pfc will tell you, so you just pull a couple of degrees timing out of it on the fuel/ign menu (i think) or just drive with less throttle input.

thanks very much guys, and paul i forgot about your awsum faq site :D im sure that should help...but that is good news about the injectors

and some good ideas with the z32...

I have been controlling myself for the past few weeks with my current setup.... its hard but i would keep doing it to save money:P...damn those excels...so quick when you can't go over 3,000 :P

Adam

You guys are idiots 200k's to a tank. Bye Bye catlytic convter, bye bye spark plugs, bye bye nice nissan piston ring seal with washed bores, hello combustion chamber carbon build up (possible leading to hot spots) bye bye oil, hello turbo coke build up. I can see the ice caps melting through your plume of fuel smoke so pull your head out of your arses and stop giving skyline owners the automatic penis attachment to there foreheads!!

hold up... i just bought some bosch plantnum irridiums... or irridiums..i don't know...buti paid $120 bucks for them and they are meant to last a while.......

they aren't going to go are they?

also... i never realised how powerful the powerfc has been untill now..it does appear to make all this alot easier

and rob82: venting a lil are we?

I think I just solved my problems... according to whereis.com my place is 28km away from Dr. Drift's shop... and being a basic racv member you get 30km tilt tray towing for free :D ... I just better check the car turns on after putting everything onto it...

Iridi are a waste of money... i dunno what is with people lately... i reckon i've posted that in 10 threads in the past 4 days.

Coppers coppers coppers!!!

Less than $20 - NGK, and overall workout cheaper than Iridi/Plati etc

ok then, thanks for that... i didn't think they would be that expensive... but then your at the counter of supercheap with a line behind you thinking i could get some cheapy coppers and you go, nar i'll lose my spot and these are more expensive... so they will be better :D

obviously not... ta

Adam

In a tuned application coppers are less prone to fouling than iridium plugs. Iridiums are great if your car is stock and your not wanting to change plugs every oil change, or 2nd oil change.

With copper and depending on how well your car is tuned the plugs will last (reliably) anywhere from 5000-15000k. Thats based on my personal experiences with my previous skyline which occasionally ran an anti-lag system. It was an r32 gts4 rb20det making about 370awhp. I used to get about 220k/tank when driving like a maniac, and 560k/tank on the open road.

BCPR7-ES from memory...

hey man sounds like your a bit upset, we aren't recommending that he drive his car around for months pumping unburt fuel out the exhaust, just suggesting some ways he may be able to not only save himself some money, but also learn something as well.

Take a chill pill, and if you're going to talk about melting Ice caps you better drive a honda jazz or a hybrid, not have an lcd screen and store water in your rain water tank... if you get my drift.

Cheers Matt.

    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
