hey fellas. Got a nissan pintara trx 1990 model. Needs rego, just moved over from N.S.W. its low, exhausht, and alot of internal engine mods. got a pod, with a home made cold air intake. (a pipe witch leads down near the front tyre). wont need a enginers cert for any of this would i?

Whats a good place in belconnen area, to get it fixed up for rego. I'am after a new friendly mechanic who dosent over charge and will get a GOOD job done. Any suggestions, comments or views would be appreciated cheers boyz and girlz.

i recommend trojan motorsport in mitchell for the friendly new mechanic 62426277, had a fair bit done through them and they were always very easy to deal with, didnt do anything that didnt need to be done and im very happy with the work john did.

for engineers cert. i went through john wilson and they didnt give me any trouble about the certificate but the guy at dickson told me they prefer ray spence, john wilson is cheaper but ray spence is probably a safer bet.

aslong as the pod is "secured" no you dont, i bent a flimsy piece of aluminium and bolted it between the pod and one of the threaded holes from the air box and then they said it was secured... it didnt move anyway :D

You shouldnt need to engineer the car, the only real reasons that you need engineering are:

* Engine swap.

* Brakes modified or changed.

* Suspension replaced by adjustable aftermarket parts and/or coilovers.

* Aftermarket ECU running the engine or air fuel controller (anything that changes the AFR's will need an EPA test aswell).

* Aftermarket turbocharger or supercharger installed.

Pod filters only need engineering in NSW, in the ACT as long as it is mounted correctly it should pass a normal rego inspection.

Good friendly mechanic - Trojan Motorsport in Mitchell, ESP racing in Queanbeyan are a good start if you have an import or performance car (epsecially a Nissan).

Just to be picky, the law actually states that any modification to a car needs to be engineered from carpet mats to engine conversions. It’s just that most cops and inspectors turn a blind eye to to more the unrealistic things like carpet mats, pods etc etc. At least in canbera anyways.

According to my now so recent attempt at getting my GTR registered, they dickson people said I would need a engineer cert for my bonnet as it was fibreglass as well as my wheels as they were not stock. But I always though that having a engineers cert. in your glove box is handy if police want to defect you for something and you have a cert. showing it isnt defective.

I also heard unless you have a professional install your sound system, they can defect that aswell on the basis that you may have gotten the electricals wrong??

Aftermarket wheels need an engineers cerificate?? - Thats absolute crap, any engineer worth his salt will tell you that the only reason you need a certificate for wheels is if they change the track width more than 15mm.

Think of how many cars there are on the road with aftermarket wheels and stereo, thats a sh!tload of cars that need engineering.

Dickson rego inspectors are just failed mechanics with a grudge against the general driving public.

I'm in the same boat, ACT to NSW rego change.

I was told my rims and intercooler will need to be engineered, i'd need to have an emissions test done and i can just swap the ECU (PowerFC) back to the stock to pass the inspection. Swapping the ECU is doing a bit of a dodge but then so is paying someone exorbitant amounts of money to put a big approval stamp on my car just because i wanted to modify it a little.

Im regretting not getting it all engineered once, now I have to do it again. :wub: You can still be defected if you have engineering, the hope is that the police see that you have been trying to do the right thing. Its a crap rule.
