much between them in lag? i have heard 300rpm?....

Bit more than 300rpm mate, a lot more IMO.

Basically -7's are response like stock, and 300-330rwkw.

With the -5's you'll definately be aware your running aftermarket turbos on a GTR as there wont be any bottom end at all generally...

But will push a lazy 370rwkw upto over 400rwkw as others have done a few times and really come on song around 4000rpm from memory where the -7's just feel like a 4ltr N/A (easiest way to describe mine as they make mumbo so nicely and early)

Everyone i know with -7s/GTSS is as happy as i am

7s would be what i am after then...do they come in a kit? with all the gaskits ect? or are the gtss the only ones that do?....

If you plan on doing cams at a later date you will be kicking yourself if you don't go -5's.

Response greatly increases with a good set of cams dialed in correctly

As for the gaskets...you only get them with the HKS Kit..but you will be paying a lot more for this.

So buy your -7 or -5 Turbo's and get new gaskets elsewhere.

For piece of mind...get a N1 fuel pump and regulator

As for your 300AWKW's, have a look at others who are making this reliably on the UPGRADE thread.

None of the garretts come in a kit (to my knowledge), unless someone is supplying it as a trader/business

GTSS's come with everything in the box ready to go.

Check the exchange rates, GTSS was cheaper a while ago (over all)

I think now the Garretts workout 300-400 cheaper once you source the gaskets, banjo washers etc over the delivered price of GTSS

Also for what its worth... none of the track GTR's here are running cams with either the -7's or the -5's

Must be something that others dont know? :D

Early stages yet and no dyno sheet to prove it but i have just rebuilt my engine and have some 260 degree cams with the -5's.

Feels like its responding early to pedal input but that could be due to the shortened exhaust or the slightly higher comp, will get a few more kms on it and then its a dyno session so we will compare the old stock cams to the 260's.

See I had 260's with my -5's and they have been taken out and replaced with the stock cams for much better results.

But so much of it has to do with the man twiddling the knobs as I'm yet to see anyone other than Ben get better results with stock cams over 260's for these size turbo's. You look at Mark and Russ who were basically running these size turbo's on their R32 and they went the other way with HUGE cams (272's). So each to their own on this front with what each tuner finds they get their best results with.

Cams dialled in correctly can greatly increase flow of gases through the motor..thus decreasing the spool time of the Turbo's.This in turn gives you +boost quicker and a more responsive motor.

Many who have done the upgrades on a RB26 would swear either by -7's or -5's........

In a stock car....-7's work a treat.

Start to want some serious power and they become too small for the job.

-5's are in a larger housing than the -7's and this causes a little more lag.

Cams overcome this lag slightly...added to -5's...Poncams work a wonder.

If their is anyone who doesn't know about this...they should not be working on cars...fullstop. :)

Good luck with the install of your gtss Turbo's.

lol... so your going to say Racepace using factory cams in -5 and -7 cars... and funnily enough having some of the quickest circuit GTR's in the land...

Shouldn't be working on them?

rriiiiiightyo ;)

Quote of the month i think

I think you may not be comparing apples to apples......street and circuit are two different things.

Also, tuners who are dedicated to racing may have the best and fastest track cars, but they spend

a lot of time and money preparing them. There is no way they are going to make this effort on your car.

Also, gearing can play a big role in speed/spool/boost.

Changing gears can play a big role.

A GTR32/33 have 5 speed manuals...this means less gears..more longer times in these gears..thus more on high boost.

this is good for street cars.

A GTR34 on the other hand has more gears...less time in each gear...thus a leaser time on boost.

What cars do Racepace run..what are there specs...do you think they will tell you?

I wonder if they have not tinkered with gears etc etc.

My answer is an honest answer...if stock cams where the best for GTR's...why would we have so many different after market ones to choose from. All that time and money from HKS, Tomie, etc etc..is it all a waste.????????.lol

I think you can email them now...let them know..Racepace has decided this and thus it it true.

My statement stands....

I'm really keen to see some 'stock cams' graphs with the benifits. It's certainly a different way of looking at the traditional and I'd love to know how it's supposed to work.

hey pha71, should be getting my 33 gtr back today with new garrett 2860-5's on it, standard cams (but cam gears fitted), bigger injectors, pump, etc.....the turbos dont come with gasket set, mods need to be done to, oil, and water lines, and mods done to inlet side of it, tomei dumps dont fit to these, will get my mechanic to make up a list of mods needed to fit these up so you can get an idea...ps. not that cheap too do either, robbie

    • I swear at my GKTech ones every time I have to take them apart and replace a spherical. But I wouldn't swap them for anything else. They absolutely slay every other option, at least in terms of how they actually work. You sure you don't want to live with bearings? I mean, they don't have "ball bearings". They are rod ends and sphericals throughout. Tough as nuts, even though I have found more than one way to wear them out.
    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
    • Yeah - but it's not actually that easy. There are limits for HC, CO, NOx and particulates. Particulates shouldn't be a concern in any petrol engine unless trying to comply to the very latest Euro standard. But getting a tune right so that all the others stay within limits AT THE SAME TIME is not a trivial exercise. You couldn't possibly get it right by just guessing at the tuner's dyno, unless he had a 4 gas analyser up the pipe, which is not often the case these days. It used to be. Every decent shop that did "tune ups" (as opposed to tuning) would have a 4 gas analsyer. Perhaps there's still quite a few of them around these days. But most "tuners" are only watching O2 and power readings.
    • Slight segway but the most expensive part of the whole thing which I would have thought would only be required for an engine size/type swap, not a VIV test, is emissions testing.  That's when you get into the big bucks.  I can't remember the exact price now but I got quotes for the GT-R based on swapping to RB30 (not that anyone bothers doing it legally anymore...) and it was around $4500 just for that alone.  The guy that does them manipulates the tune on the vehicle to make sure it passes.  The cheaper option is to book into Kangan Batman Tafe (I think that's where it was) and hire their tester.  Allegedly you're not allowed in there with the car though so not in a position to tweak anything to make sure the vehicle passes.  I'm sure in this day and age of ultra tuneable ECU's you could get the tuner to program a special efficiency (clean) tune that emits the lowest amount of particulates possible that would pass the test.  It might only make 50kW's but as long as it passed who cares!
    • I'm sure he has left signs, or, he is looking down, laughing That's my cunning plan for when I leave, lots of half finished projects, with no rhyme or reason of where I was actually up to, just to keep everyone on their toes
