Removing Abs

Recommended Posts

hey guys

lately iv been noticing a few r32 gtr around with abs removed,

i was wondering is it worth removing, what benefits are gained by removing??? (yes iv searched)

also iv read its wired up inline with the 4wd, so would you remove it with out upsetting the 4wd??

i would also like the ugly thing along with the lines out of my engine bay

if its a track car then go for your life, but if its a street car then you'll get royally screwed legally because you cannot remove any factory fitted safety feature for any reason.

i doubt there are many track-day warriors that could get the last 5-6% braking efficiency available by setting the car up sans ABS

No matter what the car is used for.. ABS is your friend!..

The only logical reason i would see for taking the thing out is weight.. even then.. the extra 15kg your going to loose.. you will loose ten fold worse when you lock up and slide off the track/race line..

Would you remove the seatbelts for weight?.. Leave it in.. ESPECIALLY if you drive it on the road.. I would NEVER go back to a non ABS car every again.. not that in the future cars wont come with ABS as standard..

There is absolutely no reason to try and disconnect ABS in a road car.

But, in 100% track dedicated cars, you do get slightly higher braking efficiency.

^ that's coz the valve block isn't modulating the line pressure at the limit of adhesion

but all you guys with roadcars should keep it

i wish i had ABS...recently drove my car into a gutter because my wheels got locked- imo, keep it- it will come in handy one day.

.....or its just my bad driving

  • 2 weeks later...

I have r32 gts4 and the abs unit was removed by the previous owner, i have no idea why. When i got it, i removed the abs lines, fitted a gtst master cylinder and engine bay brake lines and pulled the abs light from the dash. You still need the abs sensors on the hubs for the 4wd to work correctly.

I dont mind not having it as i have never had an abs car, but after driving a friends gtr in the wet, i would definatly keep it if i did the same car over again.

A compromise is to relocate the abs to the boot if you need space under the bonnet (or a large single terb is cooking the unit). Have seen this done to 2 cars now and speaking with the owners it's not a huge job.

I placed the abs unit on a switch which is shared with the 4wd system as i do a bit of sunday drifting at club events, atleast this way you can turn it back on come road time.

you can rob most of the parts out of some model of z32, they have the abs unit in the rear i think, or all the lines go to the rear first or something, i have a mate that did a similar thing
