Front Mount Intercooler

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Tonight adam (chefstagea) and I have got about 90% of his frount mount intercooler installed into his S2 stagea... Just got the last piece of piping to go and we have a slight question about it:

On the stock piping their was a small nipple with a black line going to it... Ive seen some intercooler kits which have these nipples on the new piping. Adams kit doesnt have the nipple on the piping. What does this nipple do? Im thinking ill go get one put into the piping while hes at work tomorrow. Where can I get the nipple installed? (exhaust shop maybe?)

the nipple I'm talking about is the one you can see here on the middle piece of piping:

Cheers,

Chris

The nipple just allows you to take a boost/vacuum feed from the piping...its usually hooked up in line with boost controller or the wastegate actuator on the turbo...

You can install the thing yourself...just go to Pirtek/Enzed or any other fluid transfer specialist and buy a nipple with a tapered screw thread...then just drill a hole on the piping wherever you want the nipple to be...wrap teflon tape round the thread and screw it on...its usually fine like this but i usually use some exhaust putty or silicon on it as well for added security...

Good luck...

abit of topic...

how come everyones front mount kits i see, have only 1 large pipe running from where the nipple is located and goes right down just before the hole in the chassis. looks so much neater

i bought mine few weeks ago from justjap and where the nipple goes its a small piece of pipe around 6" long...makes the bay look untidy with all these extra clamps and silicon hoses !

anywayz

How to install nipple into a Intercooler pipe:

What you will need:

Brass threaded nipple fitting, with a 1/8 BSP tread on end (Sprint Auto $4.95)

1/8 BSP tap kit (from motortrader $37). This kit is needed as thread on nipple is a gas thread, thus it tapers

White plumbing tape

3mm Drill bit

8mm Drill bit

Heat silicon/sealent

Procedure:

Mark the spot that you would like the nipple with a scratch

Take 2mm drill bit a drill a pilot hole for the 8mm

Drill out hole with 8mm drill bit and more it around a bit to make room for tap

Tap 1/8 BSP thread into pipe

Place 2/3 layers of plumbing tape around the threads on the nipple

Screw nipple into piping and fastern firm but not over tight as intercooler piping is a bit soft could easily pull threads out

Place some heatsilicon/goop around bottom edges of nut on nipple just to ensure the seal is 110%

Happy days!

No finish Installing your frount mount intercooler, with one less thing to worry about :D
