Hi, found this race shell. Looks crazy. Thinking of bidding on it but just wondering how much it would cost to build it to a full time attack B reg car...

Anyone have a clue?

Take it from someone who has built up many a race car from a caged shell, it's not worth very much at all. Buying the necessary parts to complete it would cost way more than buying a complete R34GTR, making it into a race car and then selling off the road car bits that you don't need. Looking at it, the roll cage wouldn't be FIA complient, so parts of it would have to be redone, then the complete cage would need to be engineered. Acid dipping is no big deal, a few hundred dollars gets that done locally. Seam welding takes time but not a lot of materials, if you can weld it's a small cost, say another couple of hundred dollars. Realistically the $1K to get it from Perth is about all it's worth.

ok, so, if you already had a 34 gtr caged etc, and you wanted it as a spare shell.... what do you reckon it's worth? I suppose I'm asking whats a good 34 gtr shell worth and can you get them? I know what it costs to do all the prep and cage etc....

Thoughts guys?

I can't see any value more than than a grand or two for it, including the grand freight.

I'll stick by what said, buying a complete R34GTR, using the shell only and then selling off all the road car bits that you don't need would be cheaper.

What would also be cheaper is buying a half cut (the half that you damage) and repairing the current shell.

Ok fair enough..... stock 34 gtr for say 40k, part it out, re-gain 35k (be doin real well to get that i reckon, and whats your time worth talkin to Wallies) selling everything of any real value leaves it owing, say, 5k.

Cage it - 5k

dip/media blast, whatever - a grand

labour/moving it around etc - whats your time worth?

I'm not being argumentive, believe me, but it's gotta be worth 5 hasn't it?

Oh, and if I go off, knowing my luck it'll rip both ends off it, so an end cut would be no good :P LOL

I still don't think so. If you rip both ends off, you are going to needs lots of stuff that a bare shell doesn't have, bumpers, guards, lights, wiring, coolers, radiator, bonnet, boot etc etc. Stuff that will cost you both time and money to find. Stuff that you get if you buy a complete car to part out.

i can almost garantee he wont part with that shell for under 15 grand, "( but i maybe wrong)

also had some dubious history on here, as sydneykid said the cage would have to be modified too.

would be a good buy at the right price (low) but alot of things still required from a road car and you'll be flat out finding a damaged one that is cheap to buy .

i have spoken to him and the min he will take at the moment is $20G so getting a complete car then striping it may seem a better idea.

Also if it will not take stock front guards then there is another big problem in finding/making guards to fit.

well since its listed on ebay with no reserve I am pretty sure he will part with it cheap when the auction ends....

If you had an r34 and were thinking about building it into a track/race car this shell would be a much better start - assuming the cage is CAMS approved, or can easily be modified to be cams approved (remember it would be around 5k to get the cad drawings and engineering done if it doesn't meet the guidelines)

All those talking about parting out a GTR being cheaper. Lots of guys who race cars struggle to change tyres so dont discount the labour component of building a car.

LOl, the flip side is i have seen what is required to build a Grp A car from a shell and its a farking ball ache if it needs to comply with a class or a its previous form

i got info from the owner and he said that standard guards can fit on the shell, the air jack stands can be cut off easily he says which is the only thing different on the shell to another road car obviously except the cage etc etc.

I cant see how this thing is worth less than $15k as it would take alot of time and money to build it to the specs of an original nismo shell, i mean seriously the reason why people would want it is for the time saving and money saving plus the reassurance of knowing it is built by NISMO...

I'\m gonna bid on it, i cant afford a whole 34 for a part out and that would take a century, i mean i have a stock gearbox, 2530 turbos and other stock parts for sale and nobody wants any of it... I can transfer my gear into it, he said that the standard dash, seats, suspension, kit bar cutting off the jack stands all fit, he said that it is the same as any car but with all the hard labour of an original 'known' quality engineer... I cant see any problem with b reg on it with stock stuff in it till i can afford all the gucci stuff, i mean its built by nismo, not some dodge welder if its good enough for their series then its good enough for me.

I guess first in first served...

why would you refit standard dash and seats? it can never be used as a road car and those parts are not suitable for track use?

it will take probably at least $100K to turn it into a decent track car, but i don't know what (if any) class it would be elligible for. so then you have one mighty expensive track thrash car. Think of all the gear you need to get

RB26 engine

loom

all the intake gear

brakes, all the brake piping

heater

gear box

all the drive shafts

hubs

arms

basically every little nut and bolt.

really what you would have to do would be buy a second working R34 GTR. then transfer over every last piece to the shell. then you need to start adding the track oriented gear another $50K there.

it would be a good buy for a couple of grand but not much more than that. :P

Word of caution. You are going to have to buy and fit all of the bolt on R34GTR body parts, plus any interior parts that you want to fit. I strongly suggest that you add the cost of them up, plus the mechanical parts that you don't already have. When I did it, it added up to over $30K and I have a lot of high quality parts already. Then compare that with what you can buy an R34GTR for and then sell of the parts that you don't need, including what you already have.

From what I have seen of the Group A cars, the locally built Gibson built ones were heaps better than anything out of Japan. I don't think it being built by Nismo adds 1% to it's worth as a bare chassis.

agree with both the last two posts

and i just did the costs too! especially when you can buy an r34 in australia for just over 40 grand and have bits to sell.

and the cage definately needs mods to meet cams spec

    • Please do not connect it to your manifold. If you do, as GTS suggested please record the lot in 4K with good mics attached.   On the factory Skyline, there's a upside down pipe that allows it to breathe, looks like this
    • For me I'd need some serious justification for why it has blown out.  Have you questioned him on it?  To be honest if you didn't question him right from the get-go on the first invoice that was already way over the initial quote and then you've (presumably) then paid another $1375 on top of the first invoice, then you're pushing shit uphill to get a favourable result now... It was years ago I last got an engineer out but it was around $450-$550 per visit.  That was just to inspect each progress point he gave me for the project.  Is he just doing progress inspections or is he providing engineering diagrams, technical assistance, etc??  If he's not, he's a filthy rip off merchant.  If the $3100 is the final sign off then you need to cop it on the chin, pay it and move on.  If it's not, piss him off and get a new one.  Not many Jeeps I'd value at $10K full stop let alone just engineering fees on a written off, half actual value WOVR Jeep....
    • Oh, yes. If you connected it to the manifold your first drive would be very eventful. Very shit. Very interesting. Perhaps take a video if you feel the need to see. Terminating the breather at the top of the bellhousing is normal/stock. Some gearbox lubes (hello Redline Shockproof) like to foam up a bit and require the breather to be extended up higher, so you don't get spots of smurf jizz staining the floor under your car. Mine is thus right up behind the head. Make sure you fit a u-bend at the top so it points back downward so that dirt and schmutz has a harder time getting into it.
    • Cheers for the replies. So i don't connect it to the manifold I just run the hose high up on the firewall?
    • It doesn't really answer your question...but is the head unit full android or just android auto, are you happy with how quickly it boots and responds, and do you have a link?  If we can identify good Android alternatives it will really help people stuck with Japanese screens. Did it have a separate reverse camera input so you would replace the factory one, or are you just going without now...that would be a pretty big steps back. And finally, do you have a picture of the "wire" that you can't plug in? Most likely it is some sort of aerial that is not too important eg japanese traffic or am radio or something if you haven't noticed a functionality issue
