Update, even driving in manual mode it stays in 3rd now when its warm like 666Dan said. I'm booking in to get new solenoids asap. I'll let you know if that's the only prob.

Yeah guys. It does start happening even in manual mode.

But there seems to be so many common threads here.

Backing off downhill, losing traction either by wet slip or just plain smoking tyres does cause this problem.

I'm bloody glad one guy said its lasted a couple of years.

The R34 workshop manual shows a couple of diagnostic probabilities.

For a diagnostic reference, refer to page AT4 and AT26.

The following are the results from the pages:

(most probable to least probable answer)

1. A/T fluid temperature sensor replace

2. Vehicle speed sensor replace

3. Control valve assembly replace

4. Shift solenoid A replace

5. Control linkage replace

6. PNP switch replace

I'll put my money on the solenoids for now, and replace A and B.

Let you know how I go.

I just called Ipswich Auto's and he reckons to change them will cost a fortune, has to drop the valve body out and last time he got one it was about $800!! That sounds crazy, I thought it was an electrical problem with a couple of solenoids, does he know what he is on about or not?

666DAN or anyone can you help us out, what needs to be done and how much approx to replace the solenoids? The error codes again were 10,12 & 13 (Vehicle speed sensor, shift solenoid A, shift solenoid B)

Kind of comfoting that I'm not the only one with this issue. TR34GT, did you get the noids replaced? Did it work. I have been speaking to Trans specialist in Newcastle, who quoted me around $400 for the noid kit (apparantly in the 98 GT's they only come as a pack). He told me 'limp' mode is the final result of any serious trans failure. He told me to get my alternator scanned 1st just to rule out that possiblitly, as I had a set of Headlights blow on me too. I had taken my r34 in to him to get it scanned and it too wasn't logging it as an error, nice guy didn't even charge me. If anyone does get them replaced ( i probably will soon) please post the results. Now all i need is a day off to get my car to him....yeah right lol

My autotrans guy also quoted $800 to $900 to replace both solenoids, and yes, its a kit form.

Mine is only faulting every few days at the moment.

I'm going to wait and see if I can save the money, and maybe get them replaced by September.

I'll keep you posted on results.

Call MV automatics in SA and ask what's involved, they'd know better than anyone else. I'd suggest contacting Nissan NZ direct for a quote on the part. If you get it yourself you may save a few hundred and then it should only be $3-400 to fit on top.

TR34GT, if you're interested, Barry Stace Automatic Trans Services in Newcastle is a great bloke, and told me that recently, for some unknown reason, the noid kit for the r34 has almost halved in price, he told me last time he did them they were around $700 but now $400. I'm unsure how much labour is involved, however, if I can find a auto-elec that is open this saturday I'll get my alternator checked, if that checks out, I'm getting the noids replaced asap. He can overnight them in no troubles. I'll be sure to let you guys know what happens.

By the by, does anyone know a good source for stage 2 cams for N/A Rb25?

Just tried WS Automatics in Rocklea for anyone around Bris/Ipswich WSAutomatics finally found someone that knows what he's on about, he's done a quite a few skyline auto's, he'll recheck the codes test the elec signals to the noids and the speed sensor, then if it needs the noids replaced he'll drop the sump change the noids, clean/replace filter, new oil, check everything else while its out, put it back, then check the codes again make sure the speed sensor is ok because he said thats not a normal code if its just the noids, and the good news is only take 1 day and be $550. I'm booked in tomorrow, let's see if the quote stays close to the final bill :P I'll let you know. Also told him to come to the forum and start helping on these type of questions as it can help him get customers. Check their website it is bloody good.

Very interesting.

I just had a phone discussion with M V Automatics in SA.

Michael from MVA says that this is a common problem, and they have been removing the fault shift solenoid and rewiring it for around $150.

Time to dig further and see who else can do this.

Update,

I wish it was just the solenoids :P , I got the call back about 20 mins after I left it in the workshop, auto is shot needs full rebuild, doh. Torque converter pretty stuffed, Bands 2,4 are so far gone he was surprised it was working at all.

Anyway the upside is I will now have a hot tranny when it's all rebuilt, bullet proof, higher stall on the torque conv, not too much just to 2800ish rpm, otherwise it will upset the computer. (2yr warranty) Downside $3200 ouch, but that pretty good when you look at the rebuild cost of an old ford 4 speed for about the same.

I told Barry from WSAutomatics to come on the forum, so when he does he can explain everything.

Also lose the car for 2 weeks as the noids aren't in Aus, got to come from Japan. Oh well, can't wait to get it back and light em up again :thumbsup:

Oh, and if anyone knows people looking to buy or sell an investment property or first home property in Ipswich, please let me know cause I'm going to have to get a couple of sales to pay for this!!!! Total rebuild! Shit, you could get a half cut for that much almost, I feel for you dude. I'll post if my noid replacement is a success. It would be a great help if your man from SA jumps on the forum.

yeh it does, but its sorta cool cause it gives me the excuse to spend money to get a bullet proof box (like the misses lol) :P Be quick hard changes now all the way!

And when Barry (from WS Automatics, that's western suburbs of Bris, not SA lol) reads this, he better listen to you Nik and make her bullet proof.

No trouble at all coming home this afternoon.

mate i have an R34 so check that wiring loom under the battery i had this problem and i had it put on the computer and it come up with a speed sensor error but i found wen i looked at all the wiring coming from the gearbox and i found one wire not even connected this was after taking the car every where trying to find what the problem was but once i pluged the wire back into the wiring loom under the battery all went well problem solved

I HAVE DONE IT and it works 100%

it's a common problem with auto turbo r34s wen they reach close to 70k, depending on how they have been driven

first i got it checked with a diognostic hand held computer it came up with (solenoid A and B faulty/short circuit)

so I ordered da (Solenoid Shift Kit) from my nissan dealer, $404.5 AUD delivered

10mil socket set and 1 big packet and a lonely nite under the car it was all done hehe

*get all the oil out 1st then drop the Sump then move of the wires aside and then the funn part is droping the control body valve and after that is done u will find the Solenoids on top ur control valve assy , take them off replace then with the new solenoid kit

and remember how to put everything back together the u pulled it out... not easy but im glad it's done and that i did it my self better than gettin over a $1k bill from the mechanic were it cost me $450 incl new oil, or may be a rebuild were its not needed,

Note : it's good idea to take 1 of the battery terminals out while u r replacing the solenoids, that will reset all the codes and that way u won't get fulse warning!!

here is some pics and more details

pic 1 its wen i took the sump off and with some wires still on the bottom of the control valve

Pic 2 is wen i got the control valve out and u can see on da right the 4 solenoids mounted on top ( note the springs on the left are not in the right places the small spring sits on top front )

pic 3 it's a pic of then gear box after i took the control body valve off the car (see the holes are on the top of the pic)

wen u drop the control valve assy and the springs jump off and u don't know where they go take each spring and see which hole the will go in with out forcing them in that will give u an indication to where they actually go.

pic 4 here u can see where the springs go ( left in this pic ) as r putting the control valve back on after replaced the solenoid kit

pic 5 Very important make sure u watch out for that shaft that is coming out the control valve and connects to the shifter, if it's connected right u will be able to see the shaft move as u move it from D to R and P

if any1 have any question i 'd be happy to help

I wouldn't be too keen to do that myself, I'd probably be stuck in reversve forever if I tried it!

Anyway, I get mine back on Tuesday, the kit took 2 1/2 weeks to get here from Japan, but everything else is done and waiting on them, new torque converter, new kevlar bands, new valve body (stage 2 shift again) and the new solenoids when they get here. Hopefully it feels like the bucks were well spent!

call any Nissan dealer and ask them for the (solenoid shift kit) and how long will it take to get it delivered and they will tell u the next day

i ordered it on wednesday 23/07 i recived it at my work place on thursday 24/07 around 1pm ....

Dylan, how many Ks have ur car done so far? and wat power figures does it have?

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
