with regards to exhaust emissions when we get defected for this are they just looking for noise? or full gas emissions also.... so 90db or under is fine now ive got a 3" split dump/front pipe an xforce cat and a trust power extreme 2 catback exhaust, which an officer once said to me is "too big" (but not too loud) is there a restriction on size also? If i had a couple of resonators for example put in and got it under the 90db limmit, would this now automatically be a legal modification or would i need epa approval as well? followed by an engineeers certificate...or no certificate? can the police defect me for an exhaust without measuring the db? Also is there some sort of paper or certificate that you can get which states ur exhaust db level bla bla bla so u can show the copper that it does not contribute to noise etc and hence he can get out his on meter and test the db level.

ive done a search on these but there seems to be no definate answers for many of these questions, please do advise me on how to go about quietening the current system without loosing power but keeping it legal

2cents...

Theres no restriction on size, just noise. If they see fit though (when defecting you) they can order an emissions test i believe.

The popo can still defect you on anything thats Ok'd in your eng cert. As such, a different piece of paper saying your dB is xyz becomes moot. ... also they aren't stupid, they know people change zahust setups after being done, so they take pictures of your setup. Yes they can defect without measuring it.

Thats my rough understanding, unless somethings changed.

Btw my old PE2 was around 97dB at the required RPM, and then popped a 107 on rev decel. Thats a rb26 with stock front pipes, so yours could be closer to 100dB i would think.

my PE2 i thought wasnt that loud, but then I put the front pipes and hi-flo cat on.... now shes loud... i think I have an easy 100db exhaust.... that being said, its still quite quiet unless I bring the boat on boost

Very true GeeTR they make the rules as they go.

To answer some of your questions;

You can obtain a stationary noise test from any good exhaust shop. Costs around $60

As far as emissions go, the police can order you to emissions test your car at the rta inspection station at Botany or Penrith within 7 days. This does no happen that much and im not sure what happens if you live outside the city. This is free of charge.

As far as pipe size goes, if it passes emissions and stationary sound test and the pipe is above the minimum ride height there really isnt grounds for a defect.

your basic idea is right, however the details are wroung

1.there is no size limit "however if u have a 5inch exhaust im guessing ur legal ride height is compromissed"

2.you can have your exhaust tested at a exhaust shop, however it wont do shit for you when the police cheak it

3.the police cannot send you to the botany or penrith testing station's, they can however notify the d.e.c.c "e.p.a" which inturn will send off a nice lil letter, requesting you pay them a visit and "cheak" if you have all legel/certified modification's. also note an engineer's for the exhaust, fmic mean's jackshit because the testing station cannot certfy that is the exact same exhaust, cooler etc etc.. therefore if its not standard chance's are you will asked to rectify these problem's or head down and have it pass an emission's test..

so in short, there is nothing you can carry around with you to certify that your car is legal, from a noise side or emission's. engineer's etc only help's if the coppa doesn't do his job.

hey dude i gota PE II trust 2 with 3inch front dump pipe and high flow cat, i got a EPA and i had to get mine retested, so i put on my OEM catback with the high flow and 3inch front pipe, my dB came out to 87.9. So yeh. just leting u know .

im going to try and see what i can do just to quieten it down, i think liverpool exhaust can put 2 resonators in there for me without a problem...it might just scrape it...i think i read somewhere a resonator will cut down 5db...(i think) anyhow...how about a varex cannon? surely this will save a few headaches with the popo and a quick db test....

I live in singleton NSW and the cops here are really bad on defects. I had my car defected for Exhaust, front mount, and pod. The exhaust i got a test at the local exhaust shop where they gave me a piece of paper with the test results on it to keep in my glove box. The front mount and pod i was told i had to take a day off work, travel about 3 hours to penrith to have an emissions test to clear the defect. I put the standard filter and cooler back on to clear the defect until i got done again.

    • Hey lads, reviving an old thread.  As an update, since the last time replied to this thread, ive done mostly suspension. Havent touched the motor except for maintenance. Though upon changing spark plugs, found out i had splitfires pre-installed! Updates: - Got me some stock airbox top cover and snorkel to fit onto the original intake. Should be free of defects - Bought a set of R34 GT-T brakes (not installed yet, going to rebuild + respray in champion blue + white 'Nissan' text) - Bought the last set of bilsteins from @Sydneykid and had them installed. Has been making some sounds on the rear but hopefully should be sorted out after this New Year break. - Regreased front caster rod bushings (poly bushes..) - Rear upper camber arms - Whiteline sway bars (BNF27Z 22mm + BNR11XXZ 24mm).  The rear sway bars are a bit short (ive read 50mm else where) but was still able to get them in.  Anyhows, I reckon suspension is sorted now. Maybe replace bushes (do have a set of front upper control arms from SK not installed yet) but should be okay for now. From now, I'm wanting to start working on the motor, drivetrain etc etc. Still debating on the order to go on and what to buy etc but: - ECU ( Haltech or Link ( Link states that it dont support A/T or AWD functions... Can anyone attest to this? ) - Highflow turbo ( ATR43ss2 ) - Intercooler ( Not decided yet, but cant find many good afoordable ones. Toshi says to opt for crossflow Japanese. Bit difficult this one, unless I get a returnflow Blitz from JJ? ) - Injectors ( Any recommendations ? I do have a nismo FPR ( Thanks SK ) ) - Seats - Tune by either Toshi or DVS To be fair, I did consider just keeping the stock turbo and nistuning it. Sat in a mates stock N, that had something like 200kw, and I reckon that felt more than enough. Maybe I should just go this route ahhaha. Too many choices.... Planning a trip down south, so wanting to just clean things up and make sure it gets to and from in one piece. Anything else specifically I should do before ? Cheers lads
    • Must be for the car’s lucky charm 🤷🏽‍♂️ She runs fine, but it just seems to take about 1L less. Maybe I’ll have the oil sump dropped at some point to check if there is anything
