went into morpowa again yesterday (nearly my 2nd home these days) spoke to a few lads there, and they have pointed me in the right direction with the next step on my 33.

the next step being after market ecu

they recommended power fc, as piggy back option is apparently not as tunable or flexible as a full upgrade ecu.

i ended up agreeing on the price of $2250 supplied, installed and dyno tuned.

cant complain really, seing as the ecu for the 33 has ceased production. (so i heard)

so it goes in tomorrow (thursday)

i cant wait,

speaking from experience, did the aftermarket ecu come up to your expectations?

and what step did you take from there?

cheers

craig

lol, you better hurry up and get saving mate, from what i have heard, the distributer is really low on pfc for 33 gtst.

not bad!! but i got my pfc for 1500? and paid like 300 in tuning! it pays to know people

yeah that sounds about right, but they have gone up since they stopped making them, i paid 1650 fot the ecu itself, and 500 for install and tune, its not a bad price really, and i trust the guys down there, i havent had any trouble since i have been using them.

i only had mine done in the begining of this year

that is a bargain Adrian! (and a bloody good bargain if its an Rb25 under youre bonnet we're talking about?)

there are quite a few ECR33 PFCs still floating around for sale new and second hand. They are pretty easy to get your hands on as long as youre willing to spend anywhere from $1200 - $1700.

well done if you could find one for cheap, but i get very paranoid! if spending cost price + 100% mark up for the unit is what it takes for my peice of mind, then thats what ill spend.

and also, if theres any probs with the ecu...strait back to the factory for warrenty repair it goes...

now do you think its worth the extra few hundred dollars?

ahhh, this may soumd like a dumb question, but, where do they usually sit the hand unit in a 33??

i dont want it somwhere to obviouse where mr and mrs piggy will see it.

i put my pfc on the leftside of the steering column using the velcro patch supplied n run the cable behind and thru the glove box that way if u r worried bout the cops u can just put in the glove box

morpowa tuned my power fc n did a great job, the tune will be cheaper next because they wil save the maps on their laptop, they also tune the fc while its out on the road aswell 2 chek the knock levels

thanks danai!!!

you have exact the same set up as me with the ebc and tt, i like where you have your fc, i suppose it would be good to have in a visable spot, but move it quickly if need be....im glad to hear they did a good job of yours, ahhh knock sensor? what the? lol, i have no idea when it comes to japanese cars at the moment lol

cheers for that mate.

on ya power fc u can display all sorts of readings, i display speed, revs, water temp, injector duty, timing and knock reading

the knock sensor reads small amounts of detonation and is displayed by using numbers, i think the most u want 2 see is no more than 60 (not sure) if u give it 2 much throttle and the detonation reads higher your engine warning light will flash, the knock reading can be reset on ya controller, mine doesnt get any higher than 12-25 on boost n about 7 off boost

^^^oooohhhhhh oookkkkk.....im sure ill pick these things up over time, ill be glad to get thew thing in and running right!!

will let ya know how it goes when i get it cack tomorrow, thanks again guys!

    • Dose is unaware just how much fun 145-150kw would be in a 2.5L NC MX5. It would be one of the most fun things to drive to ever grace SAU.
    • Same thought crossed my mind ~ depends on how one connotes 'stalling'...ie; gets a rough/stumbling idle as it get warm until it stalls... or... idles ok and simply falls-over when it gets to temp... ...you can test the whole circuit with a couple of resistors ...unplug coolant temp sensor, bridge terminals with a 2K7 resistor (ECU will do cold start), or with engine warm bridge with a 330R resistor (ECU will consider engine to be at normal operating temp)...it's a quick way to check wiring integrity/ECU response when you don't have a multimeter handy ...
    • They also make them with the motor mounted on the side
    • Just be warned that that turbo will not be a direct re-fit to the car. The exhaust housing is, of course, in the same place. It has to be - it's bolted to the exhaust manifold. So the dump will fit up. But the centre housing is not as long, so the comp housing will move backwards. This will affect both the turbo inlet and the outlet. There is fab work that needs to be done. Yes. it has one, it should have one. Paper gasket.
    • I only recently purchased the vehicle, it came with the flex setup but the current tune is e85 only, which is why im wanting to get the tune redone to enable a mixture.  First i need to get the exhaust redone tho. I was thinking of getting a varex muffler but it sems they dont fit well in the 33 (hang low because of the valve mechanism which sticks out on top) and generally dont sound good. So that leaves me with redoing the entire exhaust (more resonators and mufflers) so its not a menace when i come and go from home, and then have the aes dump valve somewhere along the line to really open it up. I was thinking of having it before the cat but after seeing how insanely loud it will be (on a vl turbo) im thinking of putting it more towards the rear of the car, after one of the resonators.
