Finally got my R33 GTR tuned with a Vipec V88 and I have to say I am very pleased, 40kW gain over the standard computer. You can clearly see the correlation of cleaning up the AFM with the gain in power.

Full credit to Brett at Graham West Workshops. I can not recommend him enough, he is very thorough with his work and takes a no BS approach. Very knowledgable when it comes to tuning!

I can't wait to see what it is like to drive, pick it up tonight. But for now here is the dyno-graph:

hi,

not interested in power results. can you please let us know how it drives in terms of gearchange, cold start, warm start, fuel economy, how it drives with demister on, aircon on full ball and so on

Provided the tuner configured the temp correction. it shouldn't matter if its 0c or 50c

There's a thing of having temp correction to alter fuel, and as you get a hotter temp, most people put LESS fuel in, as there's less air.

The issue becomes, there's less temp difference on the radiator to extract heat from the engine, and the inlet charge is hotter, which means, you're more likely to detonate.

An AFR of 12.5, especially with a normal amount of timing, isn't something to sneeze at. It can shred an engine very quickly.

Sure, be happy to tell you however I have not had a chance to drive it very much as yet.

Gearchange: perhaps a bit smoother than before, no pops or splutters between gears especially downchanging. Drops back to idle between gears nicely doesn't even hesitate as soon as you engage the clutch and take your foot off the throttle.

Cold start: very quick to find idle, goes down in stages and once it is warm will sit at 750-800rpm. Flick the air-con on and within a couple of seconds its idling again smoothly. Same with dry steering, turning lights on, etc.

Warm start: have not done many will let you know.

Fuel economy: something I am interested to find out too, I will fill the tank up on the weekend and drive her "normally" until its empty.

Basically with any auxillary funtion on it is fine. You would not really notice the difference in that regard to the standard computer. Standard ecus are so well engineered (as car manufacturers have possibly millions of dollars to invest in R & D and engineering). For an aftermarket ecu to be better than standard is brilliant. So, knowing this I was aware of any differences between the standard ecu and the Vipec V88. I drove it to work today so I could try and find things that I didn't like and so far I havent but it is early days.

One thing I would like to say is that I would love to put someone in two different GTR's, one with AFMs and one using MAP. In terms of drivability you can argue the toss until you go blue in the face, there is no obvious difference. In terms of the things that you have mentioned Paul (ie. fuel economy etc) I am not so sure yet. This is my opinion, so those who kiss there AFMs goodnight before they go to bed don't get upset at what I just said.

Anyway, so far I am very happy, a lot of time went into the tuning as far as I know I am the first in SA to have a V88 on a R33 GTR. Will keep anyone who is interested up to date, if you want to get into more detail PM me.

Mike

Thanks for your concern. AFR is something Brett and I talked about a fair bit and yes, we went through the temeprature correction as well as insurance. I am perfectly happy with the AFR I can not see a real problem with it and I trust Brett's judgement considering his experience and knowledge.

So, thanks for caring about my car so much :starwars:

    • It's the adhesive holding the ceramic wheel to the shaft the fails on 90% of them.
    • Foreign debris, physical shock, boost leak, could be anything honestly. The danger in taking all the timing out of a tune/hitting the R&R corner is that even if the engine doesn't detonate your turbo is taking a lot of abuse from high EGT. Also, even if nothing goes wrong it is a journal bearing that is spinning at 100k RPM on boost. Eventually it goes through enough cold start/pressure cycles to wear it out.
    • I kinda accidentally saw this, and was interested, but It actually seems to replaces the whole center computer, using the existing screen and buttons. AND it may only be for a G37 and not compatible with a Japanese 370. So its not for me, but someone else may be interested to look into it. Its about $680USD. If I am understanding it right, it basically replaces/installs and android pc that integrates with the existing screen. But I could be wrong. https://gromaudio.com/vline/ The video I first saw was the following, with very little and unclear details.     Even if your not interested in the system, the video on their site was pretty comforting in showing how simple the whole centre comes out
    • hfygrte52 what side you looking for? Do you care what color car it's off? Found a white LH side on here: https://skylinespares.com.au/product/nissan-skyline-r33-coupe-rear-tail-light/   Aussie parts place but will ship to USA. Maybe get it before there's a tarrif on 25yo shit box parts
    • I’m with Shannon’s for all 5 of our cars. Agreed values seem fair, premium price is okay. ($210 ish a month, all comprehensive).  Have claimed once with them for a not at fault claim with another car where my car had no damage. Was one call after the incident and an email after. Deemed not at fault so premium didn’t go up either.    I have called up and spoken with people who are not familiar with certain cars and didn’t agree with me on value or let their personal vehicle preferences effect the call. But called back later and got someone else who was more agreeable.
