Hi All, When I got my GTR the tail lights had been modified [i think] to only glow on one set on lights with the lights on, and all 4 on braking,is this normal? The guy I bought it off told me the car was a test case for correct compliancing in Aus.

Should a GTR33 have all 4 tail lights lit up when the lights are on, all of the ones i've seen on the road do,must just have a double filament bulb for brake brightness when braking, what is legal here and what were they like in Japan??

My r31's all have all lights glowing at all times when the lights are on so why should it be illegal for a GTR??Cheers Grey Pearl.

I'm not sure of the exact rules or when they changed - but yes for a while a few years back every skyline had one set of taillights disconnected during compliance - it is common among cars that hve been int he country for a while (3-5years).

But to reconnect you probably just need to plug back in, or rejoin cut wires. They would not have gone to too much trouble.

Similar rule still exists with imports with foglights in front bar like s2 r33 and stageas - they have (or should have) their foglight wiring cut at compliance

Thanks Duncan, So can you explain to me how they work when all are wired up to glow,is it the inside set that have the double filament bulb for brake indication or the outside set,and is it illegal for all 4 to glow in Aus?? Grey Pearl.

I have a R33GTR that has all four lights on for parking and again for brake lights (this is a pre RAWS import).

My R33GTS-T has four lights for parkers and only the outside two for brake lights (it is a RAWS import).

Cheers mate, Can you explain which set inside or out should light up brighter when braking on your GTR.Grey Pearl.

Pre modification, both lights come on for taillights and brake lights. My gtr was never complied so it just has standard wiring in to double filament bulbs. Both lights are the same.

So...check out what you have. If its single filament bulbs swap left to right and see if the double lights up - if so all you need is 2 new bulbs. If that doesn't work I think you will just find a cut wire to reattach somewhereback there

Re legality, I'm not sure.

Thanx Duncan will have a look.Cheers Grey Pearl.

Im pretty sure the outside lights should light up when braking. My mr2 had the inside lights light up on braking and just the outside light up with the lights on, i wanted to swap them around. I noticed most other mr2's had all the lights working for normal lights and braking.

usually all four lights are on dull with lights on then all four light up with brake.

mine is a fresh import and when it came in only the 2 centre lights were on with lights on then all four brighten with brake.. was complied no problems

good luck

Hi once again guys,An Update on the rear tail lights that had been modified to compliance standards on my 33GTR,I learn't a few things along the way as well,Firstly to even get a look at what they had done to stop my inside set of lights glowing except when braking,I had to get the cosmetic covering off the tailights, this may seem easy to any who have done it once or twice before ,but let me tell you those push button clips are a bastard to get off and quite simple to put back on,I see some of you smiling.

The trick with them is to get a small tipped phillips head screwdriver and gently turn them 1/4 of a turn anti-clockwise and the centre with the phillips head will pop out a tiny bit, then gently whilst turning this centre bit with your fingers pull it right out whist pulling the rest of the disc outwards as well and it should come out if they haven't been butchered before.

Right so got them all off and took out the panel that they were holding in and turned on the car lights, the wiring looked to be factory so I wondered what they had done to stop the insides working,so by a process of elimination I took the outside globe that was glowing from one side and put it in the inside socket of the other side, voila, both lights were glowing, so I wondered how could this be, faulty globes, or different types?no such thing thought I, but all the globes had twin filaments,so I went and got a few spare twin filament globes and tried them on the other side and to my joy they worked too.

Put it all back together still pondering the globes and how they had done it,btw to put those clips back in just gently squeeze the plastic tangs inwards till they will fit back in the holes, hold them in firmly and push the pin back in while holding the disc part firmly in,you may have to turn the pin a wee bit but most popped in without any trouble, however one did break the tangs ,lucky I had a spare.

Back to the globes I went and had another look at the inside globes I had taken out and to my surprise they had put a tiny bit of black tape over one of the contact dimples on the bulbs rendering one filament incapable of making contact therefore no inside lights except when braking, ingenious,I was so glad that they had not cut any wiring, now both sides glow and both activate when braking as well they look awesome at night. Thanks to everyone for their help on this question especially Duncan.Cheers Grey Pearl

haha very creative solution from your compliancer, they made your life really easy. Now back to how nissan intended
First time in my life anything came easy working on cars lol,But never look a gift horse in the mouth,I've been thinking all day what excuse I can give the cops if they question me over it,so after I plead the 5th amendment, I'm gunna use the r31 skyline tail light set-up,as a defense and if that fails I'm just going to say I had some bulbs blow and must have put the wrong ones in by mistake Ha Ha.Grey Pearl.
Dont think the coppers will pull you for that one lol.... An exhaust that is even a tiny bit louder then a mouse fart for sure....
I'll have to trust you on that mate as you live in the pull over capital of NSW from what I heard about the highway patrol moving their whole operation there lol, you'd be surprised what they would pull you over for in Vic too though.Cheers Grey Pearl.
mine just had the all conquering black tape on two cut wires, once you take the trim off they were there for all to see. spun the ends to test and all was fine so soldered them up and its been good for around 3 years now
Awesome mate thanks for the reply.Grey Pearl.

My R33 GTR was complied back in 1999 and it has always had four rear parkers and four rear brake lights (the way it should be).

My GTS-T was only complied recently and only has the outside two brake lights. From the discussion in this thread I am now going to pull the rear lights apart on it to see if it will also be an easy fix to have all four brake lights working.

    • Hey everyone!!  I've noticed that whenever I do my oil changes, after putting 4L in, the oil level sits at the top mark in the dipstick. This is after letting the old oil drain for a very long time too! I've checked the oil level daily for the past few mornings. It happens every time and it's confusing because all the threads say that it should take about 4.7L (With some just adding the full 5L) My next thought is to figure out if the dipstick I have is correct so could someone please tell me the length of the RB25DET engine oil dipstick?  I've checked images of some of the genuine dipsticks, but none of them have the length in it. https://justjap.com/products/genuine-nissan-engine-oil-level-dipstick-fits-nissan-r34-skyline-c34-stagea-c35-laurel-y34-cedric-gloria-rb25de-t-neo?currency=AUD&srsltid=AfmBOortQXofgmiHVRKuIaiKuygL4k0Ewp68c3isGZk0vvKOJ7Yqf3iB However.... the engraving on the genuine ones say 05002 while mine says AA000. This makes me believe that maybe I have a wrong dipstick? I just want to confirm before I buy a new one. The car is a fresh import from Japan so I don't have details of the previous owner to ask him. Thanks in advance 🙏🏾
