Cam Gear Adjustment Question?

what cam gears are you using...

i got caught out when me and my tuner were adjusting mine.. i bought some of the generic "180 dollar forum sponsor" items and was trying to retard my exhaust cam and wondering why power was going down hill in a big way... after some pondering, and a quick check on the HKS website which has that pic posted above, the A and the R markings on the cam gears were the wrong way around!!

Is this magic 4* of crankshaft retard the same for aftermarket cams? I have a set of HKS cams and am wondering if the setting changes because the duration and lift are different than the stock cams? I know this is a newb question, but I haven't really researched cam timing and affects of running more/less overlap etc. for a turbo car.
