He's right! Ozzy built Skyline is a BRICK on wheels and a not to good one at that. A culmination of bureaucratic bungling going all wrong!

That being said, depends on how deep your pockets are?

Engine: 20W/50 or similar, BP Corse Plus is an excellent oil to start with................ maybe 5W/50 Mobil 1 if your going Synthetic?

Transmission, including differential: 75W/90, if you have an LSD it has to be LSD specific .................................... Synthetic is expensive

Power Steer: ANY Auto Transmission fluid & again .................................... Synthetic is expensive

Brakes: DOT3 or DOT4 spec ................................ Can get DOT5 but I wouldn't bother & it's very very expensive

Cheers, D

Genuine stuff is the way to go :P

oils are a tad more expensive, but filters and stuff are cheap, and good quality.

dont listen to the 31 bashers, they've probably never driven a real 31... 5w is a bit too thin for the old RB30 (most reliable RB evah).

Head across to the 31 forums, we love all skylines, generally because they're great to thieve the 20's,25's and brake conversions out of ;)

I had an RMR30 when the OZ 31 came out. Took one for a test drive around the block. Thanks but no thanks. Kept the 30

for another 20 years. The L24e never got touched in 600k. And the car was driven HARD.

Dennis is right about the brick bit. Apart from the stove top tail lights on some, they are collectively fugly.

No denying the old things are Boats... or that it takes a particular individual to appricate them, but for crying out loud, at least respect what other people choose to drive. You can drop anything into them with minimal fuss, suspention, brake, engine and gearbox upgrades are piss easy for the right-minded person...

I could say that I think the R30 is a piece of crap, you'd ark up. I know a few bog stock (including my 1st) RB30's that are running upwards of 500,000ks and they're still going strong... so what, most engines if treated properly will last.

its all just a matter of opinion and personal preference, Myself and plenty of others appricate the R31, you lot on the other hand like you're 30's... I'd dare say there are more people out there who appricate the 31 than those who do the 30. But really, who gives a ratz, we'll all end up dead and buried having spent a shit-load on cars.

B. J. Your missing the point!

Outside of being a brick on wheels (about 1350kg) for the poverty pack with zero electrics, it was a result of bureaucratic bungling going very very wrong.

The Ozzy R31 came about because of the federal government saying for Nissan to get their import parts into Oz under by-law customs tariff, they had to produce a vehicle with something like 87% Oz content. Hence we got stuffed with the Borg Warner live rear axles and other such crap in a car that handled like a wet rag without a lot of money getting put into it.

As for not a real Skyline ............. All jap Skylines came out of Factory 5 in Japan, which was the old Prince factory, which the Oz Skyline never ever got close to.

"5w is a bit too thin" ............................. 5W has absolutely nothing to do with the oils viscosity under driving conditions, it is simply what the oil pours at @ low to zero temperature. Mobil 1 5W/50 is a 50 weight oil, not a 5 as you suggest. Hence why I suggested BP Corse Plus as that is 25W/60 I think from memory. Remember this, the lower the first number the faster your oil gets to the top of the engine on cold start and the less time without oil in the bores etc.

"Genuine stuff is the way to go" ............................ Nissan DO NOT make oil filters or air filters, they out source them to a company in OZ called AFM, Australian Filter Manufacturers, who are a subsidiary of RYCO and responsible for the manufacture of probably 90% of all filters sold in Oz today. As for the genuine Nissan oil, they don't make that either, it's also out sourced, but manufactured to their specs.

As for your claim of being great for conversions etc, the stock Oz R31 front struts still have the same 3.5" centres front caliper mounts so to upgrade to better the strut needs to be changed just like the MR30 does. In an MR30, which by the way can be purchased in relatively good condition for UNDER a grand, has IRS standard and everything from the DR is BOLT ON, no mods and to do an RB conversion, the same engine cross member is used as for L24E. How easier do you want it than that and nothing from the imported HR31 can be put on the rear BW live axle without extensive modifications.

I have DR 290mm rear rotors on my KHR30, just bolt on, I have BNR32 GTR 296mm front brakes and outside of machining the stock DR hubs, they were just bolt on, I have a 10" booster & 1" master cylinder. How you get that in an Ozzy R31 without extensive modifications?

You are driving a modified car, modified by Gibson Motorsport and sold as a special vehicle, much the same as HSV & Tickford & FPV do today for GMH & Ford and therefore has no relevance to an R31 Silhouette with all the poverty pack running gear.

Cheers, D

no shit sherlock - I realise nissan themselves dont make the filters or the oil, just the same way coles doenst make the coles branded flour. If you want me to clarify it for those with an obvious chip on the shoulder, "I advise using nissan branded filters"... happy?

as for the 5W quip, the "recomended" oil for a 30e is 20w50, the ratings simply describe how thick or thin an oil is at a certain temperature. I dont disagree, a lower rated oil will flow better at colder temps. But as it is widely known this is a forum, and me stating that a 5w oil is too thin, was only an opinion. Obviously one that you took some form of daft offence to.

FFS the "not a real skyline" shot again eh? yeah so the government said this and the EPA said that, so effing what? Its a Skyline, it was made in Australia, now stop being a racist little prick and realise they're just cars. Yeah, the BW solid rear end is generally a piece of shit... its something R31 drivers openly joke about, along with the leaking power steering lines... Who'd want squat anyway? its a literal pain in the ass, 20yo IRS is over-rated, put in a 33 cradle if you want to eliminate issues... and yes, its been done to an aussie 31.

I know the SVD series were developed by Gibson , just like HSV or FPV... Bilstien shocks, a bit of a cam some SAAS seats and a bit of colour coding and ppl are happy, obviously some people have some mental glitch that says OMG its not JDM spec / import lets burn it.

Just out of interest, what are your opinions about the import/JDM 31's?

How about this:

Some people like R31's, so they buy one.

Some people like R30's, so they buy one.

Some people like the other models, so they buy one.

Some people are restricted by what money they can spend, so they get what they can.

Some people post on a forum asking for advice, and telling them that what they have (or are about to have in this case) is a heap of shit is not really helping them, is it?

B. J. Your missing the point!

Actually, you are missing the point - of this thread.

pipster11 is asking what fluids to service his car with. Not what car he should buy.

But then again seeing as you're apparently an expert on everything and you opinion evidently is the only one that matters then why don't you just stick to helping the guy with servicing his car?

If all 31's are trash then by because of age the 30's should be not much different, regardless of which one is better, right?

Of the handful of R30s I've driven (stock and modified) I really couldn't say they differ that much in the big picture compared to a 31. Looks come down to a person's personal prefererce.

If I was to get up on my high horse like you then I think you should ditch your old heap of an R30 and go get a brand spankers V36 shipped out of the "real" factory in Japan so you can have a proper car.

pipster11 -

20/50 engine oil would be fine most of the time. I always used GTX-2 with an RB30E personally. I guess if would depend on how worn the engine is.

I think 80W-90 is the factory recommended diff oil.

You want to talk about real, or proper cars eh?????????

If I was buying a REAL/PROPER CAR as you put it, it wouldn't be coming out of Japan, it would be coming out of the UK with a Plus 300 grand price tag and look like this.

You driven one of these? Because I have!

Have a nice day!

I am a Skyline lover, and all things out of No5 Factory. It started with the Prince and has continued uninterupted

At present I daily drive an R30. I also have a C34. Now both of these were built in the No 5 Factory.

To be a REAL Skyline it has to be built there, and it is on the nameplate.
