Hi guys,

My pistons are covered in carbon (head also) and I want to clean them before reinstalling them but I am unsure how to go about this! Any ideas? I've heard that oven cleaner works but its pretty aggresiv stuff or is it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Soak in Kero for as long as you can. Will soften, but it takes a long time.

Don't use a wire brush as it will scratch surface. Use a fine bronze brush, or a die grinder with a polishing cloth fitted.

if they are pitted, new is the go.

If they are carboned up, look at leaking turbos, valve stems, or broken rings.

Also if engine has overheated, piston rings lose their tension.
