I've been reading through threads and also the "goods on oils" thread (which has awesome info btw) but I am unable to find an answer to my question.

My gearbox (R33 Series II Manual, 97000kms) has ALOT of gear chatter (sounds like heatshields rattling) around 1 - 2k rpm but after that totally quiet also hard to shift in the mornings, I am fairly sure there is the wrong type of oil in there, and im looking for an oil that will hopefully rid my box of the chatter, and also help the shifts.

I've heard that nissan recommend VXM 80. (also heard adding Nulon G70 additive to it), I've also heard conflicting stories about Redline, Motul etc - dont use in a syncro box, it will destroy your box etc.

Basically Im wondering if any of you guys have had this problem and know what oil would best eliminate or atleast quite down the chatter/rattle and also help the cold shifts. Is it worth just getting the VXM 80 with the additive or better to use a more expensive oil ?

Thanks

Had when cold usually means it's Syncro's are on the way out, or the oil is old/wrong type.

Time for an oil flush, see what condition the oil comes out in (hopefully not dirty brown like soggy mud), and hopefully without metalic particles, because if there is metal in the oil, the syncro's are gone.

B.

I use Redline Shockproof Light in my R33 Series II GTS-T.

  • This oil is recommended by many enthusiests as it helps the synchro's when they are getting a bit tired.
  • It is expensive at about $140 for 4 litres but you get what you pay for and it comes out looking as good and clean as it goes in.
  • I always warm up my Skylines before I drive them and the changes are then always easy as the oil is warm.
  • Skylines do not like being below 2k in any gear except first and generate a degree of growning as a result.

So would the Shockproof Light help the box get a bit quieter ? is it thicker than vxm80 (I can get this cheap so thats why I keep refering to it) because I was thinking if I've got too thinner oil in there it should quieten down with thicker oil ?

I dont really give the car much stick, shift very smoothly etc so the box doesnt really get a workout so I'm just unsure if its worth putting Redline in, all im really after is something to get it less noisy as it is extremely noticeable. And also would the Nulon additive help noise, or is its only purpose to just help smoother shifts ?

Thanks for your help

i am having EXACTLY the same problem inbetween 1000-2000rpm so pretty much 1st and 2nd gear

im taking it to my uncle this weekend and he will sort this out and if this post is still up and has not been sorted. ill do i write up of what was needed because im 100% sure or gearboxes are in the same condition by the sounds of it

(i have not changed the gearbox oil from the previous owner because i have not been driving it much only like 800km in 3 months so im worried about the condition of it)

and i work at supercheap because im only 17 and at school so its all i can do for now and im telling you do not get vmx80 the syncro's will get crushed with that oil (im not one of those yeh 10w-60 oil is good for your engine supercheap guys :spank:) the oil is not well enough designed to cope with the gearbox

redline is safe because its a well tested product and obviously passed ........ special for the price its at =\

cheers, Andrew
