so i'm driving along at 40kph and all of a sudden I hear a horrible shreaking noise coming from the engine, then there's smoke, a nasty smell and a strange rattling noise. I pull over, pop the bonnet, and low and behold one of the belts has snapped.

the engine still runs, but i don't want to damage anything by driving it.

A. which belt have i snapped?

B. will it cause any serious damage to drive it to a local mechanic 5k's away? or should i just get it towed? or is this something the NRMA can rectify?

C. how much do you think it'll cost to fix?

its a little hard to tell from the photos as they are a little isolated. I am guessing you have blown the one that turns the air con compressor. Run the car for a few minutes and see if your air con gets cool is the best way to find out.More than likely an idler pulley may have exploded also. They do tend to seize ...however by the photos I just cant quite see enough to be able to tell you if it has or not.if you are gonna drive it make sure you pull out any loose peices of belt first as you dont want it getting caught on existing belt and throwing it also....not an expensive fix however
