Why Go From A 20 To 25

Recommended Posts

Lol you only say that because you have such a N/A sohc anchor in your boat of a VL.

RB30E over RB20DET? If i blew up my rb20, i wouldn't put a NA rb30 in even if someone paid me.

no no no, i meant RB30et, with the money you spend on an RB20 conversion, would have used that to turbo the orignal motor, and then some, replacement motors are $100 when they go bang.

i love it how u skyline ppl under estimate the weight of the old commodores thinkin there heavier then ya skylines..... got to rember the vl has sfa unessariy stuff in it especially the povo pack sl commodores..... ur skyline would be lighter then the calais tho there about 150kgs heavier i think...

why a vl........ cause i love commodores and worship holden and peter brock n i work at a redneck job were skylines a dirty word lol...... but i really like skylines as well n most jap cars... only brand i diss is F F FAG sorry FORD...

Where the f**k is Roy?

THE 20 SOUNDS MUCH NICERS TO ME 25 SOUNDED SIK AS WELL DOESNTT REALLY SOUND THE SAME AS THE 20 THO.,,,, CAN MOST OF USES PIK THE DIFFERENCE IN SOUND BETWEEN THE 20 N 25???

Yup there's a different sound. The 25 barks like a dog, the 20 is more raspy (like a 26), has a rougher sound. The difference isn't big, but they aren't the same.

what's to be lost about.

your old thread says that you spent $5K and are now running 15.7 on the quarter at best.

it also keeps asking if we think the video sounds good.

you hadn't mentioned that you sold all the other bits off and made your money back.

what I was saying was that the $5K you initially spent to buy the other VL, transfer the 2 motors over etc etc only to run a 15.7, you could have gone MUCH MUCH faster for that $5K by rebuilding an RB30e and adding a turbo or doing a budget RB30/25.

GTST chillax dude. You're too smart to harp on about this. You've made a valid point, but you're not listening to this guy. He isn't taking the 'best' choice, he's taking the realistic choice. Who wouldn't want to throw an RB20 into their Commie practically for free, even if it isn't as good as a 25/30?

I'm just saying, you're getting worked up over someone who just thinks different.

But.

Your chassis is dogs balls.

lol r338oy chassis is dog balls i dont get lol

gtst u must have 1 killah memory to remember some thread some dude started yonks ago...... another thing i herd was doin the 25 in the vl was its more work like speodo cable n tail shaft so there would have more $$$$$,,, i am happy with wat i got now.. i think i wanna do a break upgrade now

ur skyline is a whale LOL :D Jokes

cheers every1 for ur thoughts and input

aint a millionare n i dont have the time to f*k around building a half breed motor....

There is absolutely no shame in these 'half breed' motors. money and time well spent i feel.

dude, are you awake, those 1987 holden commodores are lighter than a r32 nissan skyline,

Interesting, i will be a bit clearer for ya :D

  • Commodore SL: 1250kg
  • Commodore Executive: 1280kg
  • Commodore Berlina: 1290kg
  • Holden Calais: 1350kg

Now correct me if im wrong but 32 gtst weighs about 1300kg, so physical weight difference is f**k all. I should have said drives heavier!! as in handels a lot heavier than a 32. and heavy considering brake size etc.

And once he is towing these heavy loads (which adds to overall weight load on motor) i think the 3 litre would be better suited.

Am i correct in assuming that towing with a 2 litre turbo isnt that great for the turbo?

personally never been a fan of the vs bumper jobbies that put stick on vls, it just doesnt suit. But regardless, the car looks nice and clean. Good work

yer its looks somewhat not right doesnt it..

vs lines are to round and flowing for the sqaurer vl.

just my thoughts

i think jenkies the dude with vl wagon rb20 on here uses it as a tow car for his trailer full of tools n stuff for building and he says its sweet as no properly.... ive pilled 9 ppl into my vl before and the rb20 pulling our fat arses around diddnt feel as it were struggleing even tho it was weighed down.

i think those weights for the car would be v8 models, on the rego papper says my car weighs 1182 kilos....

thanks for compliments every1 means alot getting compliments from yas considering its a skyline forum :D....... not every1 loves the kit but at the time 3 years ago i was 1 of the first ppl to do the vs clubsport kit and i personally love it makes the car look wider.

vlt= poor mans skyline LOL

id own a black 32 2 door now if it wernt for the bank being dogs.. i went for a 10g personal loan about 2.5 years ago to get this skyline but they decided to decline me so i took my deposit n brought the vl.. id like to buy a r32 2 door sometime and have that as a second car.... properly will neva happen tho

Rb20's are strong as f**k on standard internals, CHEAP and reliable. You do need to rev them a bit to make power but its not too bad. I still love mine.. Roys car is a good example, good power on a big turbo and not too much lag.

Of course the Rb25 is naturally a better motor (how couldn't be with an extra 500cc?) But they are still fairly expensive($2000+), not to mention if you put one in a R32 you will need to upgrade to a rb25 box (another $1500) as it will destroy the RB20 box with ease. Theres also the hassles with the driveshaft, speedo sensor and sorting out the wiring and gearbox mount.

My opinion - If I had the cash I'd love a RB25.. but I'd rather spend it elsewhere on the car, so I'm happy with my little RB20 which sees limiter daily and doesn't complain! - Don't forget it sounds f**king awesome doing it :)

i totally agree with bry. unless you're going to spend loads of cash on the motor which would be worth the engine swap, i'd stay with the RB20. tuff little 2.0L they are.

the only performance motor that belongs in a VL is the RB30ET + Jatco auto.

build em both up, make around 400hp and if you can drive well, the thing will do a 10.

VLT enthusiasts will say the same thing. The torquey RB30 is ideal for the VL chassis.

If you want a RB20/RB25, buy a Skyline. They are cheap as sh*T to buy these days and usually arent anywhere near as worn down as turbo'd Commodores.

ive had both a RB30ET VL Calais and a RB20DET VL Calais and the RB30 shat all over it.

both had 3" exhausts, FMIC, pod filter and 14psi and the dirty 30 owned it hard.

there is no replacement for displacement, especially if your going to keep it relatively stock.

30 > 25 > 20

:)

:D scott your doin well to defend the 20's in vl's kudos! yes my vl wagon tows a trailer with the 20 and the longer vl diff ratio its awesoem(garderning and landscaping).

! its economical and sounds nice! did the engine and intercooler myself! cheap and easy and perfect when i was younger and had no cash(good to learn mechanics on)! but still wanted the fun! 12 pound and bulletproofe! sure the shassis as like a trolley thru the hills. thats what gtr's are for :(

lol ahhh renforcements LOL jenkines lol.. sorry boosted dont agree with ya order there

25>20>30,,,,,,,, ok ok im dont just go by preformace not doubt its important but also theres sound, cost, looks of the motor, ppl trip out when ya pop the hood of ya vl n see a skyline motor under the hood,

ive also owned a rb30et wit 270hp at the rears n it was so bad on fuel it wasnt funny n the lifters ticked like every other vl n it only revs to 6g n it diddnt feel good putting it on the rev limiter where the 20 n 25s love it... im no really defendin the 20 cause i would like a 25 but id neva put a rb30 into a vl................... this is the golden question.... if rb30s are so good why O why arent they in skylines standard??

this is backwards lol im the holden man sticken up fro skyline motors n the skyline ppl are stickin up for a commodore motor LOL

nice rear shot

I'm sorry, but that looks like a POS from the waistline down...

Square plug round hole, it dont fit and looks like shit.

on the topic of 20det's in things like VL's and 31's a 25 is a top upgrade from the 30e, a 30et is fun, and with the amount of "bolt on" options its a quick and easy option these days.

I've had a 20 in a 31, and they're fun even in stock form... I think like the others have said, if you have a 20, and want to spend some money, there is plenty out there to get your VL up there, but if its a longer term project, then perhaps a 25 is the answer.

Urrm, 30's are in skylines... just early ones  the 30e was never introduced in Japan, or as turbo in any 'factory' nissans... its a bloody good donk, just like any of the RB family.

People that are sayign chassis is dogs balls, are you forgetting that a VL won Bathurst in 1990 beating the R32 GTR, and in 87 beat the R31 GTS-R at Bathurst. (and the years between they did ok) So if they are so bad then something must be wrong with Nissans as well

    • He made that comment in my thread - In my case the vents ARE to lower engine heat, when the car is not moving, which is the only scenario I have heat problems with the aircon on, sitting in traffic, on 40C+ days. I can't imagine a scenario that this NC needs any at this point in time. I do not know if it will actually make my cooling when the car is MOVING worse, and I sincerely hope that won't be the case. If it does, well, um, f**k.
    • Nice, thanks. Thats why I was asking, there'd been a fair bit of discussion in the E90 world about vents and where it makes sense to put one (ie, over the filters is not great as that is inline or slightly behind the struts and in higher pressure area). I struggle with air flow and pressures. It sill weirds me out that a radiator in the boot can work.
    • Neither really Vents, when located in the right place, will lower the engine bay "pressure", as air has a path to escape, thus lowering the engine bay pressure, thus.....improving the efficiency on the coolant stack (read: IC, condenser, radiator) This is why the Blits vented bonnet on my 33 worked so well, the vent was in the front 1/3 of the bonnet, which put it right after the radiator  If the vents are to far back toward the windscreen, which is a high pressure zone, it can actually force air into the engine bay, causing higher pressure and effectively loosing efficiency on the cooling stack, like the fab of raising the rear of the bonnet, which does allow heat to escape, but only when the car isn't moving  There's heaps of cool "fluid dynamics" info out there, but, I'll attach a video of a 'Merican joint that focuses on "Miatas" as I found it when looking into vents for mine, they explain it way better than me
    • Poor bleeding. That stupid damping loop in the plumbing that should be completely replaced with a braided hose. Just the first 2 that come to mind.
    • Forgive the potentially silly question but are the vents for bay temps? I've been toying with how to reduce my bay temps because man, it gets HOT in there and a small subtle vent somewhere I think might help. Or, maybe they're to assist with just the intake temps?
