A person who makes unecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to):

- Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder

- Large spoiler on the back that looks like something Boeing made for the 747

- Lots of after-market company stickers they don't have parts from, but must be cool

- Expensive rims that usually cost more than the car itself

- Bodykit to make the car appear lower, usually accented with chicken wire

- Clear tail lights and corner signals

- A "performace intake"- a tube that feeds cold air to their engine usually located in areas of excessive heat (behind or on top of the engine)

- Most of these riced cars (a.k.a. rice rockets or rice burners) are imports; Honda Civics, Accords, Integras, CRXs, RSXs, Del Sols Mitsubishi Eclipses, Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, however there are some domestics such as Chevrolet Caviliers, Dodge Neons, Ford Focus; small, slow, economy cars designed specifically to go slow. Please note that some Supras, Skylines, WRX's and other higher performance imports are designed to go fast, and are therfore not always considered rice. It really depends on the severity of the case.

The "ricer" attempts to make their car "performance" by adding the modifications listed above. These ricers are not confined to any one ethnic group or color, however different ethnic groups are known for certain styles.

Honda Civics with big spoilers and 4" exhaust tips are considered to be ricers.

Honestly the people that go on ignition DVD are pretty big wankers that just want attention ie. "Look how much money I spent on a car!"

So most people think that they just want to show off and be noticed if they're putting big chromies and rice on their car, not because they think it looks good?

no mate its not about how much money they've spent on their car

its about cars that are highly modded and showing the viewers the mods in detail

im sure if you had a tough car you wouldn't say no to a magazine or DVD cover/feature

personally i always wanted me car to be on the cover of a mag and it was a massive achievement for me and great exposure for my business

i hate bodykits on all car to be honest,

i like the clean factory look with decent rims, im more into spending money on performance and handling mods myslef, and having a nice clean functional interior.

but if everyone had the same taste it would be boring,

All to their own... In the end, it's all about cars, our passion, what we love, how we choose to express our individuality and our perception on how a car should be.

Personally, I'm with GUN_METAL_GTR32... I like a car for the way it has been designed, straight from the factory. I've never bothered with bodykits. For me, it's what's under the bonnet that counts, the sleeper look and it get them everytime!

I mean, if you don't like the way the car looks from the factory and go through all the costs of modifying the look of it, why did you buy it in the first place??

theres a form of modding a import that is 10x worse then riceing it up, and that is the so called DRIFT PIG i know of ppl who have had nice cars but decided to turn there cars into drift cops even tho they dont drift but are just after a drifter image crazy

Lol reminds me of my mates crap looking Matt Black R33, used to look nice before he sanded it back and sprayed it in the backyard, its fully Drift Hektik!!!!

I have, pretty much.

Of course, my car isn't "tough" so that may be why I found it easier to do so.

The theme behind my car is subtle but aggressive . All my mods have been focused on the engine and driveline.Only in the last month or to did i splash out and buy a set of show off wheels. 19s with 10.5 wide in the back.I never thought i would put 19s on my car. I have started on the exterior which is basically Nismo rear,side and front bar.To the lay person it would not look like a had an aftermarket bodykit on it.I bought the kit because it is subtle but has a more aggressive look to it.

The wheels are purely for show.I have a set of 17inch Volks with track rubber that i use for the track and so on.

some people like to make their cars stand out from the crowd

The way I see it is, its their money.. its their car.. they do what they like to it because it makes them happy..

if they are happy with their car.. Im happy for them..

Whether I like i or not is a completely different question.. more often than not.. no..

But it makes them happy.. so meh..

Personally.. there is nothing better on a car than function over form.. simple, clean, understanded and purposefull!

modifying cars can be such an expensive process i can understand how people get stuck with some pretty suspect combos on their cars when the flavour of the month rims or kit suddenly becomes a major f**k up one year later and the money to fix it has dried up. I think thats why alot of people say its OK to do something different but subtle mods wont look like your dads sky blue disco suit a couple of years down the track.

As for mechanical mods its just a case of doing your homework and trying to create something that you enjoy driving without getting stung too bad by the police and dodgy workshops.

so a tuff looknig car with work emotions, good exhaust, nice bodykit, bucket seats go fast bits is considered rice to some of you, thats jsut dumb. there are heaps of diff stylings apart from ricer, like jdm spec and drift spec, even drift pig.

so.......my car is a ricer cause its all done up and only a non turbo?????

if its just the stock na then ....yes

but thats not saying its a bad thing, like mentioned above its what you want out of your car. If your happy with it then bingo, mission accomplished.

its funny how "ricers" actually refers to all japanese car drivers, not a particular way a car is modded

it started in the US and was used by the muscle car guys when referring to the import guys.

to me rice is when someone puts shit on their car thats serves no purpose, or to make the car look like something its not

ie: stripped out interior, rollcage, harnesses etc etc on a street car that never sees the track

kandy paint, leather trim and big rims isn't rice, its just a different style of modification

if you cant appreciate different styles of modification your not a true car enthusiast

God it is good to finally read someone who actually knows what ricer actually means

where this bull shit like "Race inspired cosmetic enhancement" came from I'll never know

But people have different tastes, I just pitty them when they try to sell it
