car looks very clean.

Just remember, you will need a standard intercooler, possibly standard exhaust, standard airbox & the tint will have to be removed along with the front strut brace. Now thats just by looking at the pics...

If you decide to go along with the import, let me know as i have a heap of stock S2 ECR33 parts available for purchase.

Vu (typevu) imported through David from Elite auto Imports, all went well there aswell (as far as i know :))

:EDIT:

just read description, smoke headlights might also need to be changed along with the gear knob if it hasnt got a gear pattern on it.

Hey that seems abit expensive Lee, was it put into a container by any chance?

Roll on/roll off is usually no more than $1200 unless there are other costs in your price for the dealer to bring it to the docks etc.

The actual shipping component was $1091 for roll on roll off. the total of $2100 includes ~$620 warfage fees (Robbery I tell ya!), Quarantine cleaning etc (~$100), Seaway Broker fee ($150). and ~$100 for inland transport via toll to Adelaide.

Overall for a delivered price to Adelaide from Osaka it's pretty reasonable.

It was the extra $500 for storage that pissed me off (due to DOTARS being slow to process paperwork) bringing my final shipping/customs/GST bill to ~$3600, it should have been $3,100 which is quite comparable to many others importing legnums at the moment.

Wow that warfage fee is what killed you!

Was there another ship that goes directly to Melbourne or Sydney?

Where is the taxes mentioned in that?

My JZX100 was A$13.6k over in Japan (back when we had a shit exchange rate), so the gst on it was $1360 (10%). The shipping was roughly $1100, plus then you've got the Import Tax which is calculated on the cost of car + gst (tax on a tax, gotta love the government :D ) + shipping, all of which = $16060, so $1606.

Customs broker ended up just over 5k for me: gst on car $1360, shipping $1100, import tax $1606, then all the other little fees like wharfage, quarantine, brokers fees, transport etc. I got slugged for storage (~ $300 I think) even though I paid the broker fee quickly, as they decided to put it in storage straight away, nice people they are :D

Compliance for me was cost price as I had a test car (first car of that type for the workshop) but compliance for an R33 should be 3 to 3.5k with tyres.

As a general rule, I say for a cheap car (under 15K FOB) budget about 10 grand on top of the FOB. Usually that should be about right, or you'll come in just under, but sometimes it may be even more.

Golden rule when importing - OVER BUDGET! it's a lot nicer to end up with money left over, than be out of pocket with unseen expenses.

^okay having said that, I'd recommend not to import something that is already abundant in Aus.

You'll probably end up having paid 15 - 16k on the R33 in your link after you've got it on the road (more if you register it for a long time and get full comp insurance and stuff). There are some pretty nice examples getting around for that sort of money, and you can sit in the car and drive it in most cases before you buy, let alone not having to wait months to even see it.

If you seriously can't find ANYTHING in Aus that tickles your fancy then by all means import your own. With someone like Kristian from Iron Chef Imports guiding you every step of the way and letting you know whats happening with your car, it can be a very interesting and happy process, but there are always risks involved which are out of your - or anyones - control, and whilst only very slight these days, the possibility of you coming out of it way in the red still exists.

Your right, I didnt include GST in my posts as Krishy asked only about shipping cost, not how much the total importing for the car. But yes my total customs Broker Fee ended up being ~$3,600 broken down like this:

Shipping $1090

Warfage $620

Quarantine $100

Broker Fee $150

Inland Transport $100

Storage $480

GST $1100

Total Shipping & Taxes $3,690

So the total for the car was the FOB price in Japan, The above cost, then compliance and tyres :D

yeah your correct Hotwire i just wanted the shipping cost

So basically if you buy the car for lets say 10K and you want to comply it and shiz then save up another 10K.....what if your getting a drift pig down here.....not compling at all then it would be cheaper wont it?

^ yeah race only you skip the compliance costs, but all the other costs you still have.

10k ontop of FOB usually sees you come out with money left over. In some cases though it will still be more than that. My Chaser for example, which was 13.6k on the boat, ended up costing 22K by the time it was sitting in my driveway rego'd with a full tank of fuel. Considering I didn't have to pay for compliance, it shows just how many costs there are after you've paid for the car itself.

Shit can seriously add up fast on you when you import, and a lot of people just don't realise how many little costs there are. Like I said, overbudgeting is the best way to do it, as 99% of the time it is more expensive then you first thought.

you should always make sure you have import approvals BEFORE putting the car on the ship to come here.

a guy did it a few years ago, story goes, he bought a $30,000 car overseas and imported it whilst it was on the boat he then applied for import approval through canberra, car arrived here, sat at docks for months coz he wasnt given approval

he got slugged with a massive storage fee and they crushed the car coz it wasnt allowed in Aus. true story.

and AFTDRK if you want more info about what cars are coming up for auction and rough price pm me and i can help you,

i got a rough idea of what i could get one here for. with similar mods to yours

^SLY-dn your technically correct, you shouldnt put a car on the boat till you have the VIA. This is actually handled by the compliance workshop (as they have to apply for it) and although I didnt wait (as there was 0 reason a legnum shouldnt be allowed in) DOTARS took almost 4 weeks to process the application as opposed to the normal 10 working days. So thats why I incurred the storage fees  annoyed shit outa me but in the end I got my car :P

hello all,

But if it does fall through i'll definately be getting back to you Nathan in regards to the services you can offer at Kansai :D

importing a car really is a royal pain in the butt, no matter who you go through. If you can buy one here for a similar price do it - it can be a very frustrating and time consuming process.

When I brought my R34 in nearly 2 years ago I had this happen.

I actually did the wire transfer of money to the Japanese company to buy the car, and the car was loaded onto a waiting car ship THAT DAY. Lo and behold, the car arrived in Adelaide 21 days later. (It was supposed to take around 6 weeks).

It takes more time than that organise the paperwork apparently, as when it arrived I was told the car should be crushed as it was illegal. All turned out ok, but it had to sit in storage for 3 weeks on the docks, and I got slugged around $1,000 for the privilege.

Then I had the compliance debacle which took over 8 weeks and they never did half the things they were supposed to = no a/c regas, original seat belts, didn't change any fluids whatsoever .... they went out of business shortly thereafter. (Best Enterprises). That was after I spent months sourcing oem parts to change over to get compliance etc etc. Easier now there are lots of them about, but when I brought mine in R34s and their parts were few and far between.

+1 Unless you're buying something very expensive thats worth inporting for the $$$ you're saving or unless the vehicle is rare in Aust I wouldn't import.

For what you're after, you'll probably find for similar price in Sydney.......fly there and drive back.

yep top advice there sled......its not worth importing a 33 dude.....and if you really love the GTR wing then buy a S1 or S2 and put a GTR wing on it...apart from that there is no difference and you might be able to find one that has been maiintained well and kept in a mint condition

    • I would paint match the whole thing to avoid unwanted attention  I had a similar bonnet, paint matched, on my old R33 GTST, but mine was a fibreglass jobbie made by Blitz in QLD, they work extremely well for radiator efficiency and under bonnet temps

    • small update time, after always wanting a "cool" looking bonnet for my car and always struggling to find one for the series 2 that i liked and wasn't an insane amount of money. Saw one i liked on RHDjapan from D-speed in Japan the price was very good for a carbon bonnet so good infact i was a little unsure how much i trusted it, decided to bite the bullet and with the help of jesse streeter in not long at all it was at my door. Once it was delivered i ran in from work and quickly unboxed it and to my surprise the quality was actually pretty good i quickly removed the old bonnet and placed on the new one to test it out and even the fitment wasnt too bad at all. Then decided to paint the little grille in the bonnet black to stop it sticking out so much.   I decided to not mess around with the hood latch and just install some aero catch hood pins, having never installed them before did some YouTube university classes and i was good to go. fair to say it is not a fun job at all from making brackets so the pins sit nicely and actually cutting through the bonnet but also being very scared of cutting the holes too big it took wayyyy longer than i would like to admit but finally got it there. Then it was time for a quick test drive to ensure the latches actually worked and thankfully the bonnet looked very stable. I still think paint matching the bonnet and leaving just the part that sticks up as carbon would help make it all look alot neater as im not sure how i feel about all that carbon on a very fridge white car but will leave it as is and see how i feel with time.
    • I think it's bound to happen, you finally get it all perfect, and bam, something will happen. I took a while to get a Commodore rear quarter repaired where a P Plater clipped it. Two days after getting it back, Sarah wiped it out on a concrete pillar in an underground car park... This is why I take forever to repair them, it stretches how long until it gets bent again... 😛
    • Nah, not really responsible for that little fiasco, but I'm still pissed at myself for writing off my 86, or when I reversed my VX into a pole just before selling it, but, meh, 5hit happens to stuff, all it takes is a slight distraction, and life is full of distractions, and "dooh" moments
