Hey all,

I've been making legitimate copies of some of my DVD's on my PC, however i've just been ripping the VOB files to the hard drive. I'm looking for some freeware software to convert them to something a little more hard drive friendly. Also need to be able to stich 2 files together.

I know this isn't exactly game related, but i was wondering what program / programs you guys use to encode your videos and where i can get them.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

If you are only interested in copying DVDs & not interested in editing the content then DVD shrink is good. & its free.

You can copy (it will automatic decode the CSS copy protection) & you can choose either to copy directly to a blank DVD (u need to have nero installed for this), copy it to a iso image file (which you can then burn it to blank disc with any burning program you want) or rip it to the hard drive (the video & audio TS files).

You can also choose to shrink the dvd to fit on standard dvd-5 blanks (4.7gb) as most dvd moives are dvd9 (dual layer).

For a more advanced program use something like DVD FAB (basic version is free, but it only has the ripper, not the burner. pro version costs $, or u can mininova it :D ). It has the option to split dvd movies up so you can fit a dvd9 movie on to 2 dvd5 blanks without compressing & i'm pretty sure it has the option to join files back togegther. The other thing it has over DVD shrink is that it can copy & crack the new copy protections used in some of the new DVDs which shrink can't decode.

Hope this helps.

LOL were all makin legitimate copies bruv ....... good timing, I just found a great .avi converter! I know this will make me sound like a major Poindexter but I borrowed the complete Star Trek Voyager Saga off a neighbour (42 Dual Layer DVD's...GAWD DAMN :( )

I currently have around 500+GB in .avi(div-x) movies and TV shows that ive downloaded, so i thought Feck that I cant afford that many DL discs plus I prefer to cram a single layer DVD full of 2 south park seasons :P (for example)

So i arsed out and found "ImTOO DVD to AVI-AVi to DVD SUITE 3.0.32 Build 1123.rar" -google that, and D/L it via torrent if u can, sorry i cant remember which site I got it from and the torrent had no .nfo file so I cant hunt it for ya. Anyways its friggen awesome!!!! So easy to use and u can change all the qualities n all that to make it turn out in different sizes and quality.

I dont know much about ripping but to be honest its all I need to know, rorted that complete saga of Star Trek into 77GB of .avi(div-x) and all came out great, all video & audio synced, etc etc. Outta all the 170+ episodes I did prolly about 4 f*ked up on me, went back n did them again, no problem(to give credit, the DVD's were rooted i didnt think 1/2 of them would work!!!!) speaking of which where the original disc was scratched my DVD player(XBOX media center) would just sh!t itself and freeze, the .avi converter managed to save the film, although it gets heavily pixilated as its playing through that section, still great job IMO!!

If its just to fully backup a DVD movie into DVD movie format then i gotta agree with Mayuri Krab and say DVD Shrink is great!! Specially converting Dual Layers into Single! a Only problem is that DVD Shrink has been giving me trouble with encrypted discs lately, plus div-x/.avi format is just SOOO much more easier! SOOO wrapped i lucked out with that converter!!

As I said im just a noob but if u need a hand dont be shy to throw me a PM!

Only problem is that DVD Shrink has been giving me trouble with encrypted discs lately!!

Thats because, some of the new movies released have new additional copy protections (like bad sectors) in conjuction with the standard CSS protection. & since DVD-shrink is no longer being developed (Dam a*seholes of the MPAA threatened to sue the maker of the program), dvd shrink can't rip these new type of discs.

I think I might give those DVD to Dvix/Xvid programs a try, was looking for one to rip my friend's futurama dvd collection to standard xvid :) .

    • Just read this... Just a little bit of a wild one! Do you think the driver was testing out a new feature/device for how to lose the cops in a high speed chase?   I also suspect, if the box has a road sweeper that does magnetic metal pick up, he does a LOT of work in the machining industry. Which is what most of that looked like, machining chips from a mill or lathe. And I bet they're RAZOR sharp! And from an environmental perspective they really do need to actually collect all of those little pieces too. I wonder how many people still cop flat tires over the coming months on that road?   As for insurance company, yeah, it'd be interesting to hear what they say to the owner. But realistically, he's right, that "It's his fault". In the way that, it was his truck that spilled it, so they need to clean it up. However, neither he, nor his insurance company may bear the end cost if they do an investigation and find out it was caused by someone elses negligence (And they know who)...
    • Yeah, no matter what bad things people can say about Julian from Autospeed, he at least was capable of thinking and his inclusion of a check/relief valve in the plumbing for the Audi boost controller, that I made a copy of and used for years**, completely eradicated that problem. **It's still lying on my workbench where I put it about, um, 18 years ago and have never found a home for it!
    • I didn't actually know this! I've seen photos of the H1, mainly outside shots, and they just look "different". I guess there'd be a few little changes like nicer rims, and probably the fact they have nicer looking paint with some depth and shine, which will make any vehicles body look different to the very flat colours of the defence force.   I've watched the guys on GHPC convert their Humvee to LS1, and they've done some really nice front shock upgrade. I'm waiting for the next video on it with the rear end done. I can't remember if they've already done it, or I dreamed it, but I believe they're also supercharging theres. They will be in the future doing proper long travel suspension too.   If you ditch out your big V8, as rubbish as it must be, send it to my place. I'll let the unreliable V8 motor and box be here. I just like V8s... So I'll find something to do with it... Even if that something is just taking up valuable space in the yard. I might have something Skyline I can send back in payment... Or even Ford Barra motors  (From memory you're in Canada yeah?) So you can then play with the legendary Aussie 4L version of an RB...  Except they don't have that distinctive random miss at idle like the RB25 does.
    • Or you mean the age old problem of early 2000's manual boost tees, where they never let the pressure out of the line between the boost tee, and the waste gate, so after your first trip on boost, the damn wastegate liked to stay open and be laggy on gear change?
