Hey i've searched around the forum for comparisons on camshaft upgrades for my R33 Gts-t but couldn't find direct comparisons.

HKS cams 256/264 (are other mods required to fit a 264?) & cam gears or Tomie poncams 256/256 & cam gears???

My mods are currently Power fc, ebc, 555 injectors, fuel pump, Gtrs turbo, fmic, turbo back exhaust and so on with a stock motor.

Making a healthy 255rwkw but as it's a daily driver i'm pretty used to it so wanting whatever gains are to be had from upgrading the cams as that's about all that's left to do with a stock motor.

All advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

No mods required to fit the larger 264 on the exhaust side. If your springs are getting a bit old and tired maybe replace them on the exhaust side but not necessary. Pretty much if you want to retain the VCT on the intake you cant go anything bigger then the 256 from either Tomei or HKS. Same thing with cam gears, if you want to keep your VCT you can only go a cam gear on the exhaust side.

I went the 256/264 setup just so i got the slightly larger cam on the exhaust side. I'll let you know how it goes since its a similar setup to yours.

hey, im intereted on how ur goes after fitting of these..

im prob. gona get 256/264 poncams and a tomei adj. exhaust cam gear..

and keep VCT.. :blush:

my question is pretty much the as Smitizin....do u need to replace lifters/valves/spring/shims???

i read that on another post that PM-R33 your running into problems..did u replace any of the above??

just wondering if anyone is going to do the same thing..its best to know before hand...

and i believe wit procams, but i believe a 264/264 + setup u need to replace everything wit solid...

but can some1 please talk more about this..done a search but cant seem to find much... :laugh:

Ok, to retain the VCT the maximum you can go is either a Tomei Poncam in a 256 or a HKS 256 (There may be others like Jun cams or something that still retain the VCT but these two are the most commonly used ones).

Most of the cam companies dont actually make a 264 cam that allows you to fit the VCT cam gear, in other words the actual fittings wont allow you to put the VCT cam gear on.

Now as for replacing lifters, springs etc. The only thing you should replace, regardless or what cams you go is the valve springs. Some people dont have any problems on standard valve springs if they are in good condition, but if you have read my thread you will see the amount of dramas i have had (which still isnt solved). We have tried everything known to man and the valve springs is the most logical answer that is causing my problems with either the valves not seating properly and being held open or something along those lines.

I have the new valve springs in my room now, but i ended up putting the standard cams back in. It goes back on the dyno this week and if the power returns on the standard cams im f***ing the HKS cams and springs off.

but i think it was on greenline..for i tomei poncams..

they had a listing like:

PONCAM Intake and exhaust camshafts. 93/8~97/9 R33 GTSt. 256 degree intake and exhaust, 8.50mm lift camshafts. Suitable for NVCS vehicles.

PONCAM Intake and exhaust camshafts. 97/9~ R33 GTSt (Crank angle sensor change). 256 degree intake and exhaust, 8.50mm lift camshafts. Suitable for NVCS vehicles.

can some please explain y? theres two different types??

and DONT say its the NEO engine...

becoz i no that in the R34 GTT but they didnt start to '99? was it??? :P

After September 1997 the R33 GTST used the same crank angle sensor as the R34 Neo did, its a black one instead of the metallic silver one like the RB20 and the earlier RB25. Since its a different type of CAS the key on the exhaust cam is actually different hence why there is a different listing in cams.

So for your car you would use the 93/8~97/9 R33 GTST cams.
