mate u wont notice jack shit.....ive used more then 10 diff types of pods. the only diff is sound.

atm im using a massive 4" stainless steel pod...which obviously sucks alot more then your standard 3"....

basicly the bigger the pod and the intake pipe....the better.....filteration is important but how the hell are u gonna test or see the results of that shit?

if you want power get a cold air intake system.....a proper one.

if you want noise? dont have a pod, get a stainless steel pipe....and leave it open

if you want a good balance.....dont buy apexi, for the amount u pay you could honestly go to autobarn and get something that does the same shit.

like above 3A are supposely the best of the best. but who knows honestly

wat ever you do, wen running mroe then 1bar of boost, always replace your rubber intake cuz it sucks itself closed.

my 2c

btw this is a oldie but thought some of you might wanna have a look

For the record, according to the testing of brand labeled pod filters the results are as follows:

1. Apexi = Very good

2. K&N = Good

3. Blitz = Poor

4. HKS = Very Poor

Now this rating is filtration wise, and as for performance wise i remember all of the pods were the rated the same and Apexi making 1hp more than the others. But IMO pod filters won't make much of a performance increase but probably will filtrate better than the stock ones and will also give the cool induction sound :D

I've used 2 on my RB20DET: M's K&N, and Apexi. I prefer the Apexi...I got it for $60 shipped. They have a "cooler" induction noise. As for gains...that's been beat to death - there really aren't any noticeable difference except you SOUND like you're going faster :D The 3a one looks neat too. Not sure I've ever seen one over here though.

Power gains on MAF-based systems often reflect redirected flow that 'hides' some of the air from the MAF resulting in slightly leaner mixures and more power. This is all OK if there's room for your EGTs to increase without hurting your engine, but pretending this kind of power gain comes from reduced flow resistance is just not right.

I use the Apexi Power Intake, mostly because of the filtration results posted above.

Cheers,

Dan

I'm using a Blitz SUS mesh type.

It sounds fantastic. but as it is steel mesh there is less filtration. It should be fine for normal road use, just dont go rallying in your skyline with it.

I have had it on my car for close to 2 years and no problems at all.

Hi guys, Obviously one of the first things a Skyliner does is install a Pod. What I want to know is, what is the best type, brand etc when considering:

1) Best Flow

2) Best Price

3) Best sounding (For all the ricers out there  )

Any friendly advice and help will be great!

Why not add

4) best performance and bang for buck

to your list.

oh..

Then I guess all the pods will be left on the shelf in favor of the stock air box with stock or aftermarket panel filter.

But if you want to be a hektik "skyliner who puts a pod on der kar for hektik sound and best flow", then by all means.. get any of those pods.

cause lets admit it... it's hektik.

R34NRG - what you failed to say about the stock induction pipe sucking closed at 1bar boost was that it was on your near 300kw 3L large turbo engine.

there are plenty of people in the 250rwkw+ territory using stock airbox and stock rubber intake pipe.

HOWEVER - they don't make hektik intake sounds bro.

and they can't point in the engine bay and go "sik pod"!!

Riiight, ppl use pods for varied reasons, be it due to noise, cost (much cheaper to stick a Y pipe and two pods on a BST setup) space constraints or big power (Iv never seen 450rwkw through a panel) Ppl should learn to deal with it.

I for one, would like this thread to remain vaguely on topic, there are many others with room for "anti hecktik'ising"

Something 'one off bench' tests don't take into account.

When deciding, you have to also take into account the oil contaminating the AFM sensor.

Dry filters don't do this, wet/oil type filters will do it. Even if you only oil lightly and correctly, some can still eventually get sucked through.

And no filter lasts forever, regular cleaning and routine replacement are essential.

From my top of the head knowledge, DRiFT and Apexi are the only dry filters.

Apexi claim theirs is 'non serviceable" item. Guess you just bin it when it gets filthy.

HKS mushroom filter is a dry one if you use the new triple layer foam filter.

I'd be careful how you clean a filter, some [not all] filters require a very strict cleaning regime, if you get it wrong then their filtering and breathing abilities are compromised. K+N comes to mind esp.

+1

Yes I recommend the K&N air filter cleaning kit. Thats what I use and does a good job.

I think a lot of people get a POD filter on a skyline because....

A: The stock airbox looks like shit if you have a nice looking engine bay (fair enough a lot of people want the stock look under the bonnet but to others a stock engine bay is about as interesting as watching a granny masturbate) I'm pretty sure i would shoot myself if someone made me put a stock airbox on my car, but that's just me.

B: With aftermarket turbos and custom pipework why would you go to the hassle of modifying the stock box just to make it fit when you could easily just get a pod filter and shield it off a little bit?

IMO a pod filter in a nice enclosed airbox is going to be a lot better for MOST people with skylines than keeping the stock airbox unless your car is fairly stock. Everyone is different though so why try to convince other people? Ever tried convincing a straight man to have sex with another man? It just aint going to happen.....

End of rant.

  • 4 months later...

pod filter, box it in to stop sucking in hot intake temps AND HAVE A SNORKEL ROUTED FROM THE FRONT BUMPER TO THE POD FILTER OTHERWISE THIS IS A USELESS MOD. stick to stock box filter if your not going to enclose the pod and route cold air into it.
