Rolling Guards

One side is perfectly flat on the inside, the other isn't so good. I used 3 or 4 different poles on the first one cause I've never done it before so it didn't come out as well. It's out of the way, but it's not perfectly flat like the second guard.

No before or after pics of actual guard, sorry.

Parallel, I used the softer part closer to the guard and tyre. I think I've got a picture of the front's 'newspaper' role job.

Edit: Don't know if you can see it that clear,

The 'newspaper roll' is what the technique of using a book or something like that to roll your guards is called. I actually used a small yellow pages book, like the one posted above somewhere, a old science book from yr5, some Vietnamese text book a while back and I think it was some history book. hahhaha. Just to make it nice and thick.

I prefer the pole once you have a good pole. hahha. I used all sorts, one was too weak, it broke in the middle of its job, another just died on me, the rest were too long. If you had the right length and strength pole, definitely go for pole. The yellow pages/book/newspaper roll technique wasn't too bad either, but it doesn't push the lip FLAT against the guard. I did it on the front because of all the tabs hanging out. It did the job, should get a proper roller to finish it off though.

What car are you planning on doing this on? Don't do it on a skyline in my opinion. The only reason I did it was because I've never done it before and it was on a cheap car. Get a proper guard roller, they're only $150 from Bursons and do the work yourself! Then maybe you can lend it out to me once you're done with it. :blink:

Adam - Just checking but you know with the newspaper roll your supposed to unbolt the bottom of the strut yeh? No need to use a yellow pages or anything silly.. just a normal sized newspaper.

Why do you have to unbolt the strut? I just did it with the suspension components untouched. :blink:

I didn't bother using a newspaper because it's too thin and it just gets 'sunken' into the tyres when the guard starts to bend out. The tyre just pushes in once the guard reach the tyres. It might work with those of you with low profile tyres, but I'm running 185/55 tyres and the guard sinks in. It sinks in and once you raise the car again, the guard hasn't even moved from original position.

Hope that made some sense.

Ah I see where you're coming from by saying unbolting the strut now...

Only problem is that my car's suspension isn't the same as skylines. When I undo my bottom strut bolt, nothing changes until I take it off the lower control arm and once it's off that, the whole wheel will come out, it's no longer 'attached' to the car. I'll get a photo if I don't make any sense.

Newspaper roll out back would be alright though, but I used the pole first. I would've just taken my springs out and let the car's full weight sit on the tyre.

Those are the only photos I found to explain it. It's pretty much one whole unit. To change the rotors, I've got to take the whole strut apart/out.

I dunno dude; dont wanna sound mean or anything but that looks full dodgy and if someone recommended i did this to my skyline id be thinking they lost their mind :D ...but i suppose since its an el cheapo car then i can understand :)

I hope ppl understand there's a difference between needing ur guards rolled, and needing em flared.

I found that 4mm thick 1.5" ID steam pipe to be best for rolling guards. To help get a good flat roll, use a heat gun to warm the paint and get some of your generously proportioned friends to sit/stand/lay/drape, etc over the corner you wish to roll. Worked a treat when I did it years ago.....

Bursons are a hardware store, something like Repco, Supercheap Auto, but they've got a wider range of things to choose from.

hahah I don't recommend people to do this on a skyline at all. It is dodgy and I only did it for some experience. Cheap car, so doesn't really matter what it looks like.

Edit: My guards don't look too bad compared to these guards.
