As everyone else has already mentioned, 11's isn't too big an ask. 10's is quite a bit trickier!

If you want to be able to reel off consistant low 11's to high 10's (or better) then you may need to look at upgrading your gearset. I don't care what others may say on this subject but no matter how good the R box is it can blow 3rd gear if pushed hard. I've seen 3rd let go on quite a few R32 & R33 boxes.

If you only want to run 1 or 2 quick passes & then rest on your laurels you might get lucky with 3rd gear? A good friend of mine blew 3rd on his first run at Eastern Creek in his R33 (he knew about 3rd & took the shift easy too). His car has R34 N1 turbo's, cams & gears, Apexi PFC AVCR, head gasket & so on... 310kw @ all 4.

If I was in your position I'd buy an R that someone has already done all the hard work on. It'll save you a few $$$.

Hi MELV, we have in the past .................

Had a standard R32 GTR (exhaust only) that did 11.9 on Bridgestone RE540's. Boost restrictor removed, so running 1 bar and with an OS Giken twin plate clutch. Total cost $29K.

Same car with 2530's, split dumps, Power FC, boost at 1.1 bar did an 11.2 on same tyres with same clutch. Total cost now up to $37K.

Tried 2540's but it was slower.

We then stuck an RB30 bottom end with RB25DE top end in it with a single Garrett GT3040BB and it did a high 10 on slicks. Total cost now $45K.

Based on our experiences, I think a standard R33 GTR with a good split dump and high flow cat exhaust, at 1.1 bar (standard turbos), twin plate OS Giken clutch and with a set of Nitto 555's on it, would do a high 11 pretty consistently. Cost around $40K.

The next half second off is gunno cost $10K, the next one $20K and one after $40K. That gets you to 9.9 and to go to low 9's, I reckon another $40K should just about do it.

40 + 10 + 20 + 40 + 40 = $150K, check with Munroe, he has personal experience, but I reckon that's about right.

Hope that added to the thread.

This thread has a few that are doing low 12's, and they're still running the stock turbos. Its a pity we don't have more GTR on that list...because there are plenty out there that will do 11's or 12's..

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...&threadid=22444

It seems after that a good twin-turbo setup will get you into the 11's quite comfortably..

Then u gotta start thinking about a strong single turbo or big twin setup to get you into solid 10's.. its about then the engine starts to need some work. After that, pull out that chequebook, because you're gonna need it!

As Sydneykid says above prettymuch :)

Allright - a thread I can get my teeth into - get ready for essay.

First get what you want to end up with in your head.

Sydney Kid is right, there is an exponential curve upwards when it comes to 1/4 mile times. A std GTR is sensational value, then you want a bit more. Where do you want to stop - because with Drag Racing there is no end to it - ever.

If you want to pull nines - leave your GTR standard & do up an old school Drag car. Whats more important - having a house to live in & a decent standard of living or having a nine second GTR & living in a tent!!!

I bought a 13,000km GTR in April 2000, for $70,000! OK, they were dear back then. Since then i have spent over a quarter of a MILLON dollars on it. No shit. We were pioneering & wasted heaps on testing different combinations, but the fact remains that getting a GTR into the tens is expensive.

Nines is a whole nother level of badness - trust me - the amout of stuff we have broken would make the average guy cry.

The biggest problem is that when you get to tens it is just not enough. My car does not scare me at all. You get the bug - bad.

I have pulled 9.45 @ 153mph going sideways on every gearchange & got to the end thinking 2 things - pity i have to slow down now, & man I'd love to get a 9.3.

I had dinner with Mario recently & we discussed this exponential curve of climbing expense Vs diminishing value. I was not surprised at all that the amount he has spent on his 8 second GTR equals the value of my Race R33, Street R33, Hills R34, EVO 7, & my SS ute. In the same way my Race R33 = the value of a nice streetable 11 second R33 GTR & a decent house.

A lightly modified GTR that will easily pull 11's, handle hills driving with ease, & still be a pleasure to drive around town is definately the best value for money & time invested.

Of course we all have to learn from our own experiences, but if I had had someone explain to me how much it would actually cost to get serious times from a GTR 2 years ago, no-one on this forum would have any idea who I was 'cause i'd still have a Std GTR in the shed with a brand new 996 Porsche Turbo sitting beside it. You know why? Because i could actually use the thing for what i really like doing - driving really fast on the street & in the hills without getting defected.

There is no turning back now for me - I am commited to improving the R33 & now we are looking to get into the Jap top 10 on street tyres. With the current changes underway we should be there hopefully by Drag Combat this year. Will wait & see how it turns out.

That was easily one of the most sobering pieces of text I've ever read on SAU or anywhere. In many ways, it reflects the problems that we all have here.

Do we highly modify a stock Skyline and get it running hard with everything done to it?

Or leave it relatively stock and just enjoy it for what it is?

I agree here. If I knew it was such a strong possibilty that I would blow turbos and engines on the Skyline BEFORE I bought it, I would get something else.

It's not even so much the money, it's the time, running around and the wait for things to be done.

T.

Yeah, i dont mean to put anyone off doing up their GTR. smart modifications are a great way to get the most out of your GTR - I'm just saying dont go to far.You will end up with a car that has cost you a house & you cant use it regulary anymore.

I love GTRs. They are fantastic value & one of the best performance cars available - all i'm saying is do your homework & be wise. If you seriously want to play - talk to the few guys that have already made all the mistakes & learn from our stuff ups.

Anyone that is serious about Drag Racing a GTR & has already started on the path of no return should talk to a reputed workshop like Tilbrooks or similar so the money can be spent on the right stuff from the beginning.

Trust me - you will save thousands of dollars & months of waiting.

From experience I can assure you that getting into the 11s takes minimal cost. A set of 2530s and the normal performance mods such as air filters, full exhaust , cam gears, fuel pump and injectors can get low-mid 11's easy.

To get to 10's I made the move to go a single turbo setup with a larger IC, cam shafts, valve springs, bigger injectors, new fuel system (twin pumps), forged pistons, stronger rods, Autronic, new gearset, triple plate clutch and the above mods. Also, a set of Nittos helps the cause big time!! I did however leave the stock GTR suspension in the car as my Tiens are too stiff and give no rear end squat thus taking traction away.

Just out of curiosity, Munro, what clutch are you in your R33 and how often do you replace it? I managed to get 14 runs and some normal street driving done (500kms) on my triple plate Ogura before it packed it in and began slipping. I'm just wondering whether this is the lifespan of clutches when I'm pushing 450+ rwkw a the strip.

Oooooops. Clicked quote rather than edit. Mods, please remove this post.

My Race R33 has a quad plate OS clutch with an 8 bolt flywheel to suit the OS crank. After 30-40 passes it is still in great condition - but I only use it on the start line. With the Holinger i dont need the clutch on gearchanges & just pull it through with a blip off the throttle to relieve torque from the gear faces.

I think it's the street driving & riding the clutch off the lights to get a smooth take off at slow speeds that wears them out.

I agree with you - 11's aren't that hard, but when you start making all that extra power with bolt ons the std internal engine will only last so long, then the gearbox will go, then you need better clutch, then you start snapping driveshafts, then you end up putting all the killer driveline stuff in & think - hey, i need more power now & off you go again.

Also, in most states, once you run 10's they require cages/harness/fire suits etc.

    • @soviet_merlin Thanks mate!  Nothing too major but will hold me up for a while. I've got lymphomas to get taken off the back of my neck and the middle of my spine which always conjures scary thoughts!  It sounds worse than it is. Yeah great, conjuring more rabbit hole deepening , just what I need! 🤣
    • I'd argue the F50 kit I got is very good value. For ~2k I got the calipers (refurbed condition), adapters, pads, brake lines, rotors, and top hats. I think you'd be pretty hard to get Evo/GTR/350z brembos + the additional hardware for similar money. Used market for a pair of front calipers alone I've seen tend to run anywhere from $1500-2000 depending on condition.    That said, something like a GTR or 350z brembo is a lot easier to adapt to the Silvia.
    • Is there a significant price difference between the Evo/gtr/350z brembos vs the F50? Looks amazing.
    • I was actually being a tightarse at the time LOL... My OCD is tickling me into running a 2nd 8AN Teflon hose all the way down and removing the 2x OEM hardlines. My other side of my brain is telling me to run 2x hardlines front to back (also acts as a fuel cooler, so win win).
    • As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had some trouble with the Silvia's brakes dragging back in 2023. I managed to sort it out then, but the same problem came back to bite me late last year. Just take a look at the picture – I had a feeling the handbrake was acting up again, and I was right. Anyway, I'd been wanting to upgrade to bigger brakes for a while. Not that the Silvia's brakes were bad, but it was more of a "want" than a "need", you know? It was funny, though – at the time, I couldn't find any Evo Brembos, 350Z Brembos, or GTR Brembos for a decent price (of course, tons of them popped up online after I already bought my kit!). I ended up going with an F50 Brembo kit, which came with adapters, brake lines, 330mm rotors, and top hats. The F50 Brembo caliper was used in a few other cars too, like the FPV. I also decided this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the Silvia's ridiculous rear brakes and that awful handbrake (some of you were definitely right about that!). I picked up some R33 calipers and all the necessary bits – rear drums, backing plates, and new hardware to refurbish the calipers. Of course, it wouldn't be a project without a few hiccups. Turns out the brake master cylinder was playing up and basically (to put it simply) keeping the brakes engaged. I had it overhauled, and after some adjustments, everything was working again. The whole process took a while, as you can imagine. To top it off, the front right wheel bearings were shot and needed replacing too. This is a rare occasion where I'm posting an update while it's all still fresh! These pictures were taken just this afternoon.
