yes very easy pull a fuse and drop the front shaft from transfer case to front uni joint

you make it sound like your removing 2 items

can the 4wd drive on a 34gtr be disengaged 100% without much modification???
disconnect attessa system, remove front drive shafts.

if you want rwd, buy a gtt.

strongly disagree... the guys at gt autosounds pickd theres up for bout 30k and its in show room condition...

R34 GTR for 30k?

no way

that's incorrect, I spoke to George Spartalis yesterday and looked at the car. its done double the kms that mine had done and mine's silver which is the colour thats most in demand from Japan and he paid $47K.

Here it is:

yah lower auction grade

$30K is what George paid for it in Japan, not landed and complied here.

Please note that Prestige have a (very nifty I must admit) program that translates and converts prices on cars straight from Yahoo Auction. What that means is that you see very cheap prices on cars that 1) may never be able to be complied here and 2) may not actually be "on sale" at the auction price listed.

All I will say about any GT-Rs are that they are not the type of cars where you should skimp on the initial purchase - you may find that the amount you saved initially is more than swallowed up by the repairs you'd have to carry out to keep a cheap one on the road.

But I have been on Prestige's auction list, with direct auction images, sheets and price straight from the USS auction yard, and frequently see high km (120k ish) GTRs go for around 2,000,000 yen. Yes, these are not perfect cars, but many of them are grade 4, and look fine. Yes of course one will have to spend some money on them due to their kms, but if one lands and complies a car here for low $30ks, then the $15k you save will more than cover necessary repairs and upgrade for many many years to come.

That said, I have been specifically looking at Nurs, as I want a late model, and yes, they are damn expensive. Surprising really, since the new GTR has come out their prices have dropped very little.

haha as if you wouldn't first in line to come for a ride

But seriously - the cheapest Nur I have seen go is $60k, and the cheapest VSpec is $30k - I don't think I can justify spending twice the price. Not sure I can justify trading up from the GTT at all to be honest - given the amount of time and money I have put into it.

Edited for accuracy

I've got auction prices from the last six months, and the cheapest V-Spec is listed at 2.35 million, which was a grade 3.5 with 135000km on it. So at 2.45 mil FOB you're closer to $36K landed and complied, assuming pads don't need doing (highly unlikely).

Before you all get excited, the other thing worth mentioning is that at USS, a car can be "fushoku" (or totally rusted out) underneath and if the top of the car is clean, it'll still gets a grade 4. Looks good on paper, but a disaster when it hits compliance...

You won't let up on that low $30K saga will you Andy.

If in the next 6 mths you can find a V-Spec for that sort of money landed and complied, I guarantee you it will be a total lemon ready for the wreckers with either excessive rust or filled with bog the size of your fist due to a bad prang.

I remember telling you a couple of Fridays ago in Rundle St that spending the extra $10 to $15K up front will save you spending that much after you buy it because it would still be a lemon with high kms if you spent the cash later.

Yeah I know what you are saying guys. Don't worry - I would never buy a car without getting an inspection done at the auction yards first.

But I face the age-old problem of coming up with $20k fob vs $35k fob then waiting the time lag for the car to get here. It's all well and good until I have to come up with the cash - it is much easier to get hold of $20ishk than $35k, let me assure you. Obviously can't get finance of any variety for such a transaction.

Chef, I listed a white grade 4 R34GTR with around 120k kms on it on the last page - no doubt the auction sheet has been taken down now, but it was 1.809M yen

A very nice looking white GTR sold yesterday for 1.809M yen - that is just over $30k landed AND complied. Unbelievale - given I paid 970,000 yen for my R34 not even 2 years ago. Yes it has done 124,000km, but given most people will want to crack the engine and freshen it up eventually, and change over the suspension components, for an extra $10k you get a freshened up motor and brand new suspension. As long as the interior is in good nick - who cares?

But yes, of course I would prefer to buy a tip top R34GTR, especially a Nur, but if I am going to spend $60k, I might as well see if the R35GTR grey import thing works out, then grab one of them for $100kish or less (say at the end of this year some sold in Dec last year would have 20,000kmish and would have to have dropped in price). Yes I know I am being cheap in my discussions above, but if I could secure an R35 at the right price, I would make the sacrifices necessary to do it.

I bought my R34GTT from Nagoya (= snow country) and it was perfect when it arrived. Bought it off the Prestige list, and it landed here in 21 days from payment. Car has never missed a beat, has not even seen a mechanic, and I have driven it over 50,000km already (edit: I service it myself of course). The wheels had rust spots from the salt, but had them repainted and nothing else need touching. Compliance and Regency were a breeze, with no rust to speak of. But of course I could have been unlucky and picked up a rust bomb.

But yes, I get your point too.

So in your travels, what do you think is the cheapest price you can get a a half decent R34GTR? I think the ones I saw for about 3M yen looked better, and they would be around $40k. I am not fussed about km being a bit over 100,000, as this seems to be the best price point/value for money. Also wouldn't mind some minor mods like exhaust, intake, intercooler, suspension etc. that I could change over before I sent the car to compliance. I take it there is an R34GTR compliance workshop here in Adelaide?

I am hella getting ahead of myself here .... am very happy with the GTT .... but still like to know the facts for when I make a decision.

Completely understand your predicament Andy. Goodluck with the hunt.

It's a "how long is a piece of string" type questions, but $40K landed and complied is do-able for nice one with higher kms, for sure. Compliance is available in Adelaide.

Would he get a V-Spec for that sort of money though, and is choice of colour still a contributing factor these days to the amount he pays?

Will let you know in two weeks time - I'll be over there finding one for myself. Funnily enough, midnight purple seems to be cheaper, and that's one of my favourite colours. Was gonna get Bayside Blue, but every man and his dog seems to have it these days lol.

Here's a really rare colour in GT-Rs (apologies for the advertising...), and yes it was originally a factory colour, although resprayed now:

WOW that is one amazing GTR!!!!

There was a guy on Ebay trying to sell a yellow GTR or about 6 months - not on there anymore - not sure if he sold it in the end or not. Not a great colour for a GTR imho:

yellow R34GTR

I am not particularly fussy on colour Chef, but would prefer Midnight Purple III, Black, Bayside Blue or Millennium Jade (not white or silver though).

The leather seats on the Nur would be a huge bonus for me, hence why I was looking for a Nur. Love the leather! But they are holding their value way too well.

Let me know what you find in your travels. Good luck finding your perfect car while you are there.

If you are ever after some company on a trip, I am dying to go to Japan. I have always felt it would be no fun to go to that sort of place without a guide, hence my desire to travel with someone who knows their way around. I would leave the wife and child home, obviously  Maybe when I am seriously in the hunt for a GTR I will make the trip.

    • Ah yes, fair enough! I was purely thinking about cleaning the spokes and front of the wheel with the mitt. For the barrel the rag on a stick makes more sense. I've tried cleaning the barrels on mine and gave up in frustration. Between brakes being in the way or spokes being in the way and limited space to constantly move the car front and back it was just too annoying. The barrel being as shiny as the rest of the wheel sounds amazing though. At this point I'm not even sure if they have the same surface finish on mine. But I feel inspired now to find out.
    • I have a wheel cleaner pokie thing which is a glorified microfibre rag on a stick, and there is not sufficient clearance between the caliper and the barrel to clean that section. I just roll the car forward 500mm and have another shot at each wheel.
    • The "rag on a stick" is a easy way to fit in between the wheel spokes into all of the barrel Albeit I do have 10 spokes on the MX5 which limits the access to actually jam my hand in to clean the barrel, but it was also makes much easier to clean the 5 spokes on the Dunnydoore with it as well, as you don't have to worry theΒ  caliper getting in the way if you have at least about 15mm space between the caliper and barrel This of course depends if you actually have the clearance between the barrel and caliper, and the amount of OCD you have to get the barrels as clean and shiny as the face of the wheel The thing is bendy as well so you can actually shape it to conform to the inner lip of the barrel Β
    • FWIW, as well as a basic immobiliser/remote unlock (all basic units give you those 2 things), I would also install a 4g tracker in any car I cared about. Just hide it anywhere that won't be found in a rushed look and preferably get something with a built in battery backup so it stays online for a while when the battery is removed or flat While its not a car, when our car trailer was stolen in that den of crime Sydney about a decade ago, the cops were watching from the bloke's neighbour's lawn within about 2 hours until he started swapping the plates and putting up the gumtree ad.Β Β  Obviously it is still not undefeatable (eg parking it up for a few days somewhere without sky sight) but it greatly improves your chances of getting it back quickly and with less damage
    • Instead of magic keyphrases I wonder if something can be done with auto complete. Similar to how user names are handled already. When you type '@' and follow with letters, it'll search across all usernames. It might work to have the same for forum topics. Some key to trigger it and then text search across all thread names and it'll insert the name and URL when pressing enter.
