Dont underestimate the MX5's, there strong cars for what they are, awesome in the twisties and fairly economical.

Girlfriend has one. Ive driven it, and its much more direct and chrisper then my GTR was when it was stock. But its got nothing on the GTR for power (obviously) and yes, ehm, ill only drive it if my girlfriend is sitting next to me.

Mazda Familia GTR is a dangerous buy, having come from a mazda astina with the motor out of one of them (well, a GTX, but similiar) I will warn of potential problems due to their age, and their taste for gearbox's.

For his budget and his aims I think the MX5 is really the way to go, get the hardtop version as they are slightly less hairdresser spec.

Thanks Ian, he agrees.

I have 2 letter and 2 numbers as my suggestion.

AW11

4agze powered ones with good mods can be had for about $7K in really good condition.

car weighs about 950kg

if I didn't need some sort of back seat, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

If he is thinking of spending $10K on a mx5 (I assume it wil lbe the 1.6L 89-91 model), then this is a far better choice.

I dont know how much they cost these days but Id put my money down for a Mx5 sure abit of a girls car I know but dropping it on coilovers will make you look at it in another way - needs turbo cause they are way to slow nonturbo.

Secondly Id toss up between a Starlet, Charade turbo (seem to heaps around and cheap, cheap parts) and if you want to throw some dosh into it a GTIR

If you want something that will gain money the longer you have it look at a AE86

I just bought an Audi A3 1.8T . Good motor, well built and cheap on fuel. Handle and stop pretty well from factory. only 1100kgs.

I got a 1999 version with less than 100,000kms for under $12k.

Hard to beat value and because the 1.8T is used in VW's etc. Parts don't murder you and they are a doddle to work on.

Dont buy a car, keep the falcon and put the money in an investment account or a property..

..

Bah, who am i kidding, get the clio. Thats a great idea.

Well the car isn't saving him any money. It's worth around 15k, has some work to it and just chews the fuel so he's after something cheaper to run. He wants something he can enjoy driving again and doesn't cost him an arm and a leg every time he floors it.

my mates one is reliable and FAST...

when its not having the gearbox replaced... :P

lol, i mentioned the clio didnt I? Its not what you would call a "blokes" car but then again, these days, what is>?

Youre always going to be on the wrong side of someone.

The MX-5 is one option but its a hairdressers car. Only drivers coming out of the closet admit to it being a performance package and it looks like theres a few on this forum.

If youre going fuel efficient, forget turbos or blowers because the minute they hit boost they get thirsty. Superchargers are the same. So that rules out the AW-11 in my mind - teh imported one.

I still say the Clio. Sure it may have been the name for my ex missus' dog but Renault built a cracker with that car - its well built, packs a solid punch, has some decent room inside, doesnt look too bad and is within the budget. Plus the fact that Wheels gave it BFYB top dog status.

What more do you want really?

I do agree but I think he's coming out of the closet because he's really been won over on this MX5.

^^ oh so he's ghey....

well then um... ford capri, suzuki cappuccino, mx5 :)

I take it you have never driven a suzuki cappuccino or a mx5 :P

My mates capp was overtaking stockish (exhaust, fmic, and maybe boosted) 32 and 33's at a Winton fun day, with only an exhaust mod and on compliance tyres (read: cheap shit, wall flexing, tyres).

Great little car, if you're 5 foot 10 inched (or under) and small-medium build. Definitely the cheapest thing on fuel; with todays prices $30(98ron) will get you 400km. 3cyl, 0.9ltr, turbo. Also you can source Suzuki Motorsport turbo/ecu upgrade kits quite easily.

lol, well tell him that before he makes his decision, its imperative that he does a back to back with teh clio.

If the MX-5 comes out on top after all that then so be it.

good call. try out as many cars as you can. use the car yards as your personal bitch, then go buy the car he likes from a private seller

btw i drove some mx5's and was quite dissapointed. i guess for less money they might be ok, but in the end, i talked my gf out of buying one. its basically a chassis with wheels. overpriced for what you're getting, and oh so very gay for a bloke to drive.
