Hi all,

im looking at building a Gaming PC using the following parts. What do you all think? good or bad? suggestions would be welcome!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, dual core, socket AM2, 3GHz

2GB DDR2-800 PC6400 SDRAM

Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 AMD 790FX ATX

GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, (G92) PCI Express

All in all it should only cost around 730... im planing to hook this up to my LCD so i can use the keyboard and mouse instead of the homo controllers of the ps which i cant stand. Plus i will have one insanely large monitor.

Not bad, the intel dual core though still seems to be the pick of the bunch at the moment, have a look at a few threads down from this one in regards to building a new pc, lot more info for you.

If you want to go with AMD then tweak it slightly, for $50 more you can do better (at MSY, see parts list http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf )

Get the better chip, better mobo, better card

Id say the 1gb GT would work better than the 512mb GTS on the Large screen LCD you'll use.

If you want a bigger card ($300 more for 1gb Asus 3870 x2) you need a 850w Coolermaster realpower Pro for $240.

$$$$ adds up when you want the good graphics cards

SADDDDDDDD SO SADDDDDDDDD^^^^^.... im a geek but i would never waste that much money..... if it was your car... well yeah definatly..... but at least you could show it of.... all you end up wtih is a computer to make the sniffling grease ball geeks want to sexually satify you for a touch of your keyboard...... sad but as close to true as you can get.

anyway, for what you had listed, for $50 more you can go a fair bit better (ie next model up on the stuff in your list)

Not bad, but for a similar amount of $ you can build one with a Intel C2D which is faster overall. & they can be OCed easily while the AMD are pretty much @ their max frequency already.

Prices were taken from MSY

Intel C2D E8400 ~$220

Gigabyte P35 DS3P ~$155

2Gb kit 1066mhz Ram ~$75

512mb 8800GTS ~$325

All up $775.

Also do you need new hard drives? & How big is your LCD? For a system like that, make sure you have at least a GOOD quality 500w PSU (with a amp rating of over 20Amps on the 12V rail).

You should be fine as long as you know what you are getting, & buy from local salers' (in AU) with good rep.

Having said that, I have seen people sells all kinds of dodge crap there.

Like a Quad Core E6550, that like saying I'm selling an original factory N/A GT-R.

sorry to hijack the thread but.....

looking at upgrading some computer parts for a mate of mine

he's got MS so he is in a wheelchair the whole time, so he doesnt play like full on games

he use's his new Samsung 42" Plasma as the screen

he already has 1Gb ram, and a 60gb hard drive

he needs a new vid card to have true widescreen on the tv and as a consequence a new mobo and cpu (as the mobo is old and only has AGP)

so this is what ive come up with - cheap, but will do the job:

Pentium Dual Core E2180 2.0GHz about $78

Asus P5GC-MX/1333 about $55

XFX NVidia 8400GS 256Mb about $40

that should do it alright yeah???

if you are getting a new mobo, does the existing ram fit it? if the old mobo was AGP and the ram fit that just check to ensure the ram is the same.

Nice and cheap setup, you may also want to look at upgrading the 60GB hard disk in the future as a lot of software is now taking up considerably more HDD space

His probably gonna have to look at upgrading his ram aswell, pretty sure most of the motherboards that is AGP is also DDR (unless you got one of those Asrock hybrid boards that has like both DDR & DDR2 slots), while all current mobos now uses DDR 2 (or DDR3)
