Hey everybody,

A few months back I drove my car off the road, did some pretty serious suspension damage. While I was repairing my car I pulled apart one of my calipers (passenger front if it matters) to get more room around the lower control arm/castor rod/tie rod. I put it all back together and am driving my car again, all seemed well...

Until today I decided to have a look around my car, I noticed that said caliper I pulled apart was weeping fluid. Needless to say I quickly checked the brake fluid level and it was fine, as if it where full. However, my concern is with brake fluid being hydroscopic... absorbs water from the atmosphere which can turn into steam inside your brake lines giving you very limited brake capabilities... or so I'm told...

So here are my few questions.

1. Do the calipers have seals of some kind? I didn't notice any while I was pulling them apart so I'm hoping I just didn't line them up very well... which I didn't lol :P

2. If they do use seals, where can I pick some up? Nissan Parramatta got me a tie rod, they would have some?

Obviously I forsore the process ahead of me regardless of needing seals or not and bought some brake fluid. So when my questions are answered I'm going to pull them apart, put them back together and do a full brake flush. Untill then I'm just going to drive carefully, engine brake as much as possible (which for me to do more of is going to be a hard task in it self, I'm usually all over the gears :)) and keep an eye on the fluid level.

so you split them in half? i dont think you can get the seals from nissan. most calipers like that are sealed from factory, but you cold seal them up with a propper an-aeroobic sealant like locktite 215 etc etc.

where is it weeping from? - between 2 halves or rear fluid lines or around the piston or bleed valve?

they split into 2 halves and are sealed using 2 square cut orings. i would say to replace these you will need a rebuild kit that will include these seals. $45 a side for front calipers.

I'll look into that locktite stuff. I image you could buy that stuff just about anywhere?

How far apart... One side stayed on the car (cable tied to the strut to be exact) and the other side lived in the boot of my car, wraped in a rag (or more accurately, my work jumper). So I pulled them very apart :(

Its weeping from between the 2 halves. When I put them back together I was in a bit of a rush, sun was going down, it was starting to rain and I needed my car on the road before morning. When I looked at it the other day I noticed the 2 halves don't sit as flush as the opposite side.

$45 per side seems a bit steep just to fix my own f**k up, especially if I'm only after seals, but if thats what I have to get, I'll get it :) Its what I get for trying to fix my car with no real idea what I'm doing :D

btw... where abouts would I be able to pick one of these rebuild kits? I'm just after options at this point so I'm not ruling out the locktite.

i'm not sure the rebuild kit will include them as generally even when replacing pistons and seals you don't seperate the two halves of the caliper. they can be near impossible to re-seal. I really don't think loctite will cut it either. like gave said they are sealed in the factory and generally remain that way. i'm still not really sure why you split them in half instead of just removing the caliper? it's just 2 bolts and the brake line to undo. :thumbsup:

just check when you order the rebuild kit that it comes with what you need. and if worst comes to worst just buy a second hand GTST caliper. they are cheap enough.

Like I said, I really didn't know what I was doing. I have a mechanical enough mind to pull something apart and put it back together but not enough to know when to leave things be. I had a go and now face the consequences :)

Just did some reasearch on rebuild kits. Z32 kits don't come with the seals I'm after, and I have a feeling that Nissan will follow suite with a Skyline. However the guide says to buy an O ring from a hardware shop like Bunnings. I shall see how I go :)
