If There Was A Chance For You, To Learn More Skills On The Road....would You Do It?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

If you had the chance to learn some new skills, learn how your car handles, get some tips from some other members, would you do it? And what about driving your car fast - legally??

Well,

For those people who post here, and dont look in the events section or anything, SAU NSW is actually holding a day like this!

June 21st at Wakefeild Park raceway - its a "driver training" day which means passengers are more than welcome!

So if your interested, pleae click here to see the track day thread!

Everyone and every car is welcome

This will be a great chance for you to drive your car in a controlled, legal environment, and learn more car skills at the same time :)

Cheers!

Chris

is there any reason why the track day is around 160% more expensive than most other days? i know you guys are trying to push people into becoming sau nsw members but i think the way you guys are doing it is crap.

other days that cost the sau nsw price usually have timing. the other day in the events section is $110 and is the exact same day. me and around 5 of my mates have been itching to get out onto the track but if i had a day that cost $110 and a day that cost $180, which track day do you expect us to want to go to?

It's because the cost of the track has gone up by about $1000. Not to mention that $110 day is on a weekday which make them cheaper.

p.s Timing is an extra $15 per car.. I also have a feeling that The guy who organised that track day know's the company who owns wakefield and his trackday is based on 60 cars not 40 which equals less track time for entrants.

As a complete track noob who's done a couple of events only, I've gotta say the atmosphere at an SAU day is by far the best for me.

some of the other days can have a lot of ego's on the track and it's not uncommon to see a veteran blast a new guy. Nothing sh!ts me more and it's why i will never again go to certain days.

At SAU the atmosphere is one more of learning and fun, but at the same time "nicely" competitive.

Add to that the driver training element and it's quite a good day.

Personally for me, it's also a once a year thing, and I have no problem supporting a day organised by our car club/forums from which i have gotten heaps of value in the past.

At the end of the day it's each to their own, but my only complaint with the SAU track day is that it's only on once a year :-)

that makes sence. so official timing can be organised for $15 extra?

You will also get the experience of some great drivers who have raced in hundreds of real racing events.

You can't even put a price on that.

the other one includes this too.

Offical timing wont be offered at all sorry Joe. If we have timing we can't have the passengers.

Also keep in mind that they are expecting 60 people on the track, we are only expecting 40. So more track time per group with the SAU day as well.

official timing can only be arranged if we make it timed for everyone. We can't just do 2 or 3 people out of the whole group.

You are usually looking at 600 a day for timing. that's around 40 cars.

it costs what it costs because the club exec do the sums then charge what is needed to try and ensure our club does not make a loss.

part of the reason official timing is not provided is because it is the distinguishing factor between a speed even (run under cams or AASA) and just a training day.

also bear in mind if you attend a day that has official timing you will 100% NOT be covered by your insurance policy if you damage your car.

if you attend a driving training event which does not have official timing then depending on your policy there is a good chance you will be covered (check with your insurer though as some require you to notify them in advance).

if you are keen on getting some times to improve your track skills then it's a good idea to invest in your own timer. a good, infrared lap timer and beacon cost around $350-$400 all up, and you can split the cost with a mate or even 2 to share it.

Joe,

Have you been on the track with a group of more than 12 - 15 cars?

VERY croweded. With us - you get less cars AND more track time and as Jase said, you get some senior members who race all the time to offer some advice. Also it is a social event where you make new members and friends and meet up with old friends and members.

Plus as also mentioned, it is a saturday where 98% of people DONT need to get a day off work

I know what I'd prefer :D

Oh, and Richard, Unfort most insurance companies wont even cover you on our track day even though we are doing it as a driver training day, as soon as you sign that bit of paper on entry at the track, even just to sign on, AAMI, Shannons, Just Cars, NRMA, Vigil etc etc wont cover you.

Chris,

as stated by Adam in the first post:

Entry will be $160 per car for SAU club members and $180 for non members.

i guess it all sounds fair enough except i like having more cars around me (i do better times when im either chasing or being chased by someone). i think i might hit up the next track day. i still refuse to become a member though :P

what you mean insurance companies wont cover you?

just for that day on the track...or afterwards as well!?

id love to come!! im jsut worried about insurance.

Yeah, I guess that's fair enough Joe - it gives you something to aim for if you have others to judge yourself against, and I suppose it's always nice to have bragging rights when you do a better time than them.

Hmmm, you've stated that you still don't want to become a member, but do you have any suggestions of what we should be doing to bring more people (including maybe yourself) in? It'd be good to hear some constructive criticism instead of you just saying "the way you guys are going about it is crap..."

    • Definitely the stroker kit. once you mention you have a RB28 everyone will assume you will flog them and hopefully won't start asking about support mods. Anyone will be too scared to race you, except maybe the RB30 boys
    • Just a quick update: I decided to go ahead with the de-cat for now. The exhaust shop inspected the catalytic converter and said it was in good condition. I took a look myself, and it does not appear broken nor clogged. After the de-cat, the car feels more responsive and smoother. The shop also reinstalled the exhaust temperature sensor into the de-cat pipe, and now the warning light no longer comes on, even when driving hard. The only thing that’s bugging me is the tinny, “can-like” sound the exhaust makes now (similar to having a hole in the muffler). The shop suggested that I might need to replace the muffler. I'll have to think on what to do next.
    • I want to start upgrading but don't have the budget to drop 15k at once, if i was to do one first which would be better and why?
    • Yuh. It is very rare for a single turbo to throw ceramic into the engine. Quite common on GTRs. As I posted above. Mine did destroy the O2 sensor on the way out though! Plastic compressor is fine with the temperature. It's not some flimsy PE/PET/PP thermoplastic. It's a thermoset resin with reinforcing material in it (a composite, as posted by @Lithium above). The compressor never sees much more than 100°C because it's never boosting very high. If you boost it high enough to make a lot of temperature, then the turbine will depart the scene and stop the party anyway.
    • From what I understand, it's a ceramic turbine and a plastic compressor (not sure how it doesn't melt then lol) I heard the series 2 r34 gtt has a metal turbine but I doubt that. @GTSBoy When you blew your standard neo turbo it didn't cause damage from memory just the turbine ended up in the cat?
