G'day SAUWAers,

Later this year I'm moving over with the missus and just thought I'd take the time out to say hello and introduce myself as well as ask a few questions about Perth.

So I'm moving over because my missus is studying at Murdoch University next year. I'll be pursuing a career with WAPOL and will hopefully settle in nicely to what I've been told is a lovely city. Before the move happens we'll be visiting to look for places to live etc so I thought I'd take this opportunity to ask what are some good areas of Perth/Fremantle (near the uni) that are 'nice' areas.

I'll probably bring my car over with me but I'm sure it will be a massive hassle to switch rego over to WA being a (slightly) modified import.

I look forward to meeting you all and attending SAUWA events sometime late 08 early 09!

(PS sorry to the mods, I noticed I posted in the wrong section and you amended it :S)

Depends what sort of place you're looking to move into (unit, apartment, house etc) but occasionally some decent places come up at pretty good rental prices considering how much the prices have jumped up. These are a good site for ideas anyway:

Good luck & hopefully meet you soon

hey mate, i go to Murdoch Uni along with a few peeps on here, great place to go so just let your missus know that... she'll be very happy...

as for yourself and where to live, hhrrmm... i'm NoR (North of River, SoR - South of River, terms used plenty here in Perth) and Murdoch is SoR so i don't know too many places close by but a lot of people live in Canning Vale if you want to be close, don't know how good of an area that is though bahaha...

although, Booragoon and Applecross are very close and of high standards if you want to live somewhere nice, they're quite good examples of nice places to live near Murdoch... and of course you can live in Murdoch haha

as for your car, just bring it into a compliance workshop if you really love your car and want to keep it (something to keep in mind before i go on, cars over east are generally cheaper than those here in perth) anyway... somewhere like Imports101, give them a call and ask if they would be able to help you return the car to stock and get it registered here, they should also put all the modifications back on so it seems as if though you car hasn't changed since moving from Adelaide...

their details:

Imports101

1/25 Forward St

East Victoria Park

Western Australia 6101

Phone: (08) 9355 5101

Fax: (08) 9355 5102

Mob: 0403 065 666

well, sorry for ranting on too long but i hope you have a safe trip here and all the best... also look forward to welcoming another member into SAUWA soon, take care

andrew :D

Thanks for the websites. I guess I'd be looking at realistically moving into a unit/apartment first seeing as the price of rent is really high in the Perth area.

On the subject of bringing my car over; what am I looking at? An ID check or full inspection from anal government twats? Are they as strict over there as they are here?

Hey thanks for all the great info!! I told the gf and she was happy to know that Murdoch is a good place. It's going to be really hard for her especially moving as she'll have 0 friends but luckily I have SAU events to attend hehe!

I'll give Imports101 a buzz in the future about bringing my car over, it shouldn't be too hard to pass WA rego as it's only got non-stanard exhaust, suspension and wheels.

Looking forward to the move!

Should be fine mate, you'll have to take it over the pits to get it onto WA plates but they shouldn't be too anal with those minimal mods. I think you also get a grace period of a few months before you have to get it rego'd here.

Perth is the best place to be at,

Compared to the other citys I've been too, Perth is more relaxing instead of Rush all the time in other citys..

but gotta admit, the nightlife (Clubs, pubs, etc) in Perth isnt as great as Melbourne haha :P

Our hills roads aren't as good as the ones in SA lol. But, they're still pretty decent imo.

Rhys - zig zag is NOT always fun :P It's funny to watch your passenger tense up though haha.

Mundaring weir road is pretty good though.

We got an MX-5 brought over from Vic and you get 2 months before it has to be registered, however you cannot drive the car on the roads until it is registered.

You have to buy registration day by day when you want to use it, which cost us $12.50 per day(that was well over a year ago though) we had to do that twice just so we could drive to the licensing centres.

As said above you will need to have it go over the pits, we went to a local mechanic who could do this as the lines were far too long at the Government centres.

Best place to live is Applecross. I worked there for well over a year and it is beautiful, we were going to move their until I fell pregnant and we had to find a House instead of an apartment.

Good luck with the move!

hey and welcome. We did the move over here abot a year and a half ago from Vic. Its not that bad here as people have said seems more relaxed than other citys and so far we have not changed our rego but its not an import so i dont think they look at it closely.

Wow thats really expensive for a permit. I guess I'll have to return the car back to stock before I ship it over to save hassles.

The name Applecross even sounds pleasant :D I'll put that down on the list!

Thanks for that, I'll check it out

My only problem with moving to Perth is just the fact it's so far away from the rest of the major cities. I'm guessing as a result the average grocery bill is higher thank the rest of Aus.

That would be good if I could get away with not transfering the rego but hey I am trying to get into the police so it's law abiding for me... did someone say skids?

Sure is mate. The Kallamunda and Mundaring area has some fantastic roads to drive on. Also, Zig Zag Road in Gooseberry Hill is always good fun! :D

Zig Zag has the same kind of ring as a road we have over here called Corkscrew Road.

No prizes for guessing what that road's like hehe!
