friend is having trouble getting his harmonic balancer off a rb30 in a 1989 r31 skyline

its a 1 peice harmonic balancer

whats the best way

:D hi doug

just had the same prob with mine. If you have tried a rattle gun and it doesnt work get a big breaker bar and socket, park the car on the concrete, disconnect the coil lead and crank the engine a little bit at a time (better if there is 2 people so one can keep any eye on the bar while the other one cranks it). Mine came loose after about 7 cranks

If you already have the bolt out but cant get the balancer off go and buy a balancer puller they start from about $18 for a supercheap one but most dont come with the correct bolts for the balancer so just go to a nut and bolt place with a bolt that does fit and ask for some high tensile ones

i took mine apart about 3 hours ago (stupid VL with stupid cooling system setup, blew a stupid headgasket.....stupid) bolt came free real easy for me, little to easy..... but anyway. try the starter method, but before that, try what i did, i just got a socket and breaker bar, had it facing straight up, and put my foot against it, then braced myself against the car, hard to explain but just try it, you can put heaps of pressure on it with your foot, or just kick the f*cking thing till it cracks free

yeah as above for the bolt, however the harmonic balancer it self is another thing

pack the hole with grease, get a tight fitting piece of steel(or another bolt that will take up the area of the hole)

grab a hammer and slam the bolt, the grease will act like hydraulic fluid and push the balancer off,

or ya could stop being a cheap a*sand just get a harmonic balancer puller from super cheap for 20 bucks

To remove the bolt use the above mentioned cranking the engine approach, easily the cleanest and most effective way. To pull the balancer, only use a puller.. bashing the thing is only going to damage the crank.. and potentially the balancer while you are at it.
