Hey guys,

Last night I was driving around, gave the car a bit of a stab an I noticed that at about 5.5 – 6 RPM I could hear a slight popping noise, only lasted for a second or two.. Later on in the night I was jus driving smooth then outta nowhere the popping noise (like a wrx with an exhaust) came back.. the car feels like it doesn’t wanna move an the noise is so irritating,, Spoiled my night, an now im cut cause I just done the 100,000km service last Thursday the 5th June..

Any ideas what this could be?? I really hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else, Its so depressing.. :thumbsup:

Sounds like a misfire. Easiest way to fix is to replace spark plugs first, if that doesnt fix it replace your coilpacks. Most people use Splitfires, but there are other alternatives.. Do a search, theres heaps of info around on this subject.

I dunno why I posted in the NSW thread.. This is the first time to post, guess i jus got excited.. lol

my mechanic done a full service on Thursday, changed the timing belt, spark plugs (Platinum), petrol filter, coolant an a lube service.. he’s usually pretty good, ill take my car back to him on Tuesday with some of the forum feedback..

It’s a 1996 R33 series 2 gtst, only mods so far: full 3” turbo back exhaust, Turbosmart supersonic BOV. Had a turbosmart boost tap but took it of, feel like it wasn’t running smooth with it on..

Do you think it could be from the exhaust??

Its only started making the popping noise in the higher rev range since I put it on about 3 weeks ago.. :)

well...Im leaning towards what Jon said with the coils.

whenever you start modding cars, the standard stuff wont last too long.

If you had more mods I'd suggest fuel pump....but yeah I agree with Jon.

Cars now of this age, the standard stuff needs replacing!

Sounds like your mechanic could have put plugs in with the standard 1.1mm gapping. Skylnes tend to like 0.8mm gapping more when the coil packs get old. As your coil packs get old, they cant put out as much spark as they used to so the sparkplug doesnt have enough "oomph" to arc across the gap. By reducing the gap you increase your chance of arcing and creating a spark. You dont want it too small though because the smaller the gap, the less intensity of the spark. If the spark isnt intense enough then your fuel may not burn as completely.

You can buy a feeler guage for about $10 from Repco and gap the sparkplugs yourself if you are comfortable with that. I'd definitely try that before spending the $500 on Splitfires.

Alternatively you can just replace the spark plugs with NGK BCPR6ES type which come pre-gapped to 0.8mm.

dont listen to the above. Changing all your plugs or coils isnt the correct way to fix things, it just costs the most money

1st leave everything in apart from the coilpack cover, start the car and disconnect the plug from each coil starting from the front. As you unplug one at a time the revs will drop, if they do just reconnect the plug. Once you get to a coilpack that when you unplug it the revs DON'T change that is the one thats causing the issue.

From there swap a coil pack or spark plug to narrow down the problem. If you unplug them all and they each cause the revs to drop then the issue is else where.

John's method is the BEST way to make sure that you are hitting the source of the problem before you go and spend money on new plugs or coilpacks - it might take a bit longer but it could be money saved in the long run...

As mentioned before in many other threads, RB25 tend to f**k their coil packs pretty bad.

Same thing happened to me last week, replace sparks and coils at the same time man, does you a treat !!

And as above, if your gonna' start modding your ride, you might aswell spend the money now, then hitting a cheap fix and having to do it again in the future.

I thought of pulling out a cheap fix aswell, but might aswell get it done now and outta the way.

He's not getting misfire until higher in the rev range, so how will unplugging one at a time do anything? At idle all 6 should be working correctly so he will get a drop in the revs across all 6 cylinders wont he? :P
