I've got the same thing happening on my 34 gtt and I think I know what it is. Once I took the car for a dyno and the wastegate actuator got stuck open (so wasnt making any boost) so the mechanic had to take the actuator metal cover off to fix it.

Ever since I've noticed a crappy rattle sound when the car is cold and recently tried to figure out where its coming from and I am 99% sure it's just the wategate actuator metal cover because the mechanic only put 2 screws back in and not all 4 GRRR.. so when the engine is cold it resonates and the cover makes the rattle sound but once it warms up (and components expend a fraction of a milimeter) the cover no longer rattles as it then sits tight. Im gonna have to try and source the right screws for the actuator cover to test this theory.

it may not be exactly the same thing but it could be something silly like that .. a screw loose somewhere and when the car is cold a small space appears so that it rattles due to the vibrations of the engine. I'd try and pinpoint the source of the noiuse with someone's help.

Sounds like piston slap. When your engine is cold the pistons are smaller thus have more clearance in the bore. When u get some heat into the engine they expand @ the skirt of the piston and take up some of the clearance, thus less rattle. Could also be gudgeon pin to piston clearance or conrod bearing clearance. Does it sound uniform thru the engine or do u think its could be localised to 1 cylinder? If u think it is 1 cylinder only, remove the spark plug lead while the engine is running and see if the knock disappears or changes pitch. If it does then it is more likely to be a conrod bearing or gudgeon pin problem rather than piston slap. The vt commodore with the Gen3 was bad for piston slap when cold,a lot of the problem with then was attributed to the short piston skirt.

    • Hi everyone, I bought the Redline diff oil and the seller has sent me Redline 75W90NS even though that’s not what’s pictured.  I’ve already booked a hoist to go and change my diff tomorrow but I’m not sure if the NS is ok for the rear diff in a R34 GTT I think the NS does not have any slip modifiers so would that be an issue?    thanks in advance
    • Not easy to find pics from 15 years ago, but here is a partial one. Keep in mind that it curved immediately from the airbox, then kept a straight line for the MAF to read correctly, followed by a 45 degree bend straight down to the turbo. This connection was the most difficult as it had to twist as well as bend to meet the almost vertical straight section of the intake.
    • Yes, well, wrt a wheel alignment, there are two types. Either: You have very little added adjustables, in which case the alignment can be done by anyone in any tyre shop or equivalent, and will only take 30 minutes, and so there is no reason to even consider leaving the car there. OR: The alignment is a major exercise because you have adjustables everywhere and so you will need to be taking it to a shop that is skilled and experienced at setting up race cars and the like, and you won't need to worry about leaving the car there.
    • does anyone know the specs of the R35 master cylinder, rear ratio and knee point? the BM57 is a 0.4 rear ratio with a 435psi knee. I'm looking for someone with a much lower knee pressure. the piston area of the R35 brakes isnt that big so might not work for me but this is interesting.. the other option for me is a GU patrol master cylinder and booster and do the prop valve externally.
    • It sounds like by avoiding maintenance you may be doing more damage than a hypothetical guy in a workshop taking it for a spin. Not sure if you are just being paranoid or things are actually that bad in the US. Find a reputable shop not run by dickheads. Look for people that take pride in their work. Stick around for the day if you have to
